Some questions I had about the recent FF re-releases:
1. Did Square revamp the graphics of FF1 and FF2j? I was just curious. 2. Why didn't they re-release FF3j as well? I'm playing it right now, and I don't think it's that bad of a game. It has a few annoying characteristics (e.g. must de-equip a person before changing classes; must de-equip a slot to equip a new weapon/armor), but I didn't find them as bad as some things in FF2j, such as that girl continuously doing ineffective attacks. (I'm playing these on NES ROMs; I'm not sure if that would influence how the game plays out.) 3. Are they planning to re-release FF3j anytime soon? 4. Did they change the FF5 lead character's name from Butz to Bartz just to keep the stupid pun from going? I have a feeling they did. 1. I think they used Wonderswan graphics, which were FF4ish. The battle system was done FF4ish as well, instead of the boxy original system.

Yeah, the Final Fantasy Origins rerelease of FF1 and FF2j do have updated graphics that are about on par with that of FF4j.

If I recall correctly, the Japanese version of Butz/Bartz is, in romanji, 'baatsu'. The 'aa' sound is like 'ah', which isn't far from the schwa used in 'Butz.' However, r-colored vowels (like the 'ar' in 'Bartz') don't exist in Japanese, and the correct way to put an r-colored vowel into katakana is by making the vowel longer. My name, therefore, ends up being 'rohreru' ('rooreru') instead of 'Laurel.' If you turned the name 'Bartz' into katakana, you'd get 'baatsu.' (Which sounds like 'Butz', remember?)
I know that was kinda circular, but does it help explain the name change? -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

FF3j was in the process of being remade for the Wonderswan Color. You can certainly find some screenshots still, if you look around. It was canned, though. I don't know why. Perhaps the WSC was already dying by the time they got anywhere with development.
There have been rumours that the remastered version would be finished and released on the GBA, but I've heard nothing concrete. Perhaps the powers that be decided to give us FFTA instead. ![]() |

3) The way the games play on the ROMs should be the way they play in real life (if its a quality ROM) the things you described are all parts of the original games.

I was actually wondering why they changed the name (as opposed to why they chose "Bartz" for "Butz"), but I can see how the two names are the same. After thinking about it for a moment, I realized that if you use a certain English accent (I think it's a British accent or a Bostonian accent) you end up pronouncing "Bartz" as "Bahtz", which isn't far from "Butz". Besides, The PS2 was already out by the time they had the first two ready for PSX, so maybe they didn't want to wait long enough for the system they were releasing it for to be "too" obsolete. Which is kinda dumb, considering backwards-compatibility. Or maybe they want to have one FF game left in original form as long as they can before they turn it into another cash-cow. 3) Answered 4) Depends on how you pronounce it. Well. they released FF4 for the wsc with Revamped graphics, the only graphics that weren't improved were the characters battle sprites, everything else was made better, field sprites, enemies, backgrounds, etc. So isn't it a little odd that they just flat out skipped 3?

on the subjest of the annoying girl that does ineffective attacks, i must object. She can do some serious damage, it just depends upon her equipment.
Hopefully, we are talking about FF2j, and the girl you speak of is Marie. Let me give you a comprehensive (not to mention powerful) method to make her uber goddess of slaying. Here goes: 1. Unequip her bow in the beginning. 2. Level up her unarmed strike 3. Crap your pants yeah, #3 may seem extreme, but when she does over 1000 damage each hit, you probably won't be able to help it. Hope that helps out some. -------------------- once you can accept yourself, you will never be alone |

Her name's Maria, and it's actually a good idea to keep her bow. Yes, she sucks with it in the beginning, but if you're patient and just keep practicing, eventually she gets pretty darn good with it. And of course, later on you'll get much better bows, which also help. The Yoichi Bow is the best one in the game, and it does stunning amounts of damage if you've bothered to level up Maria's bow skill.
Of course, I'm an advocate of not using the game's intended template for the characters if I can get away with it. Who says all the women have to be physically pathetic magic-users, and who says you have to give the big muscley guy the axe? So on my second play-through, I gave Maria an axe and made her my heavy hitter, made Guy my primary mage, and didn't bother giving anybody the bow. Just because I could. ![]() |
