Well, does anyone know the origin of chocobos? I don't mean where they come from, like chocobo eggs. I mean actually the origin or creation of the word and the birds. All I could really give to help is that the first chocobos were in final fantasy 2

They are a mythical bird from some kind of culture, can't really remember though.

Final Fantasy 4 was where I first remember seeing a Chocobo, but I've never heard of Chocobo folklore in any of the games concerning their origin..
..All1I can say is that if Chocobo's were present in this World I'd make them the alternative to the energy crisis ..eno oil changes, long life span, durable, yet fun and can also be used as pets, which can be breeded in many ways to result in Chocobos that heal and fly .. Yes,athe ramblin' must stop some5time.. |

I heard that "chocobo" was inspired by the picture of a bird on a box of chocolate ball candies sold in Japan a while ago, but that's just the real side of the chocobo's origin.

Never really thought about this. But I would have to just say that the final fantasy crew just went crazy and thought that giant chickens would be funny. I think chocobos are cool though. I always name my chocobos, in any game I get a chance, Boco

Glenn was right
Quote Chocobos might have gotten their name from a chocolate candy which sold in Japan a few years back (and is still popular). It was called "Chocoballs" and had a picture of a bird on the front. But unfortunately the bird looks nothing like the familiar yellow chocobo that we all know and love... ^_^ That's the closest explanations they've come up with -------------------- "I had to write four novels before they let me write comic books." -Brad Meltzer |

kinda makes sense too:

Well, "ball" in Japanese is "bo-ru" (written in katakana, since it's a loan word). And the Japanese language has this wonderful phenomenon for shortening words and creating slang terms that works sort of like acronyms in English, but since Japanese is based on syllables, not individual sounds, it's a little different. It takes the first two characters of each word and jams them together. For example, the word for "personal computer" in Japanese is "pasokon", from pa-so-na-ru ko-n-pyu-ta (a little simplified from the actual spelling, but you get the idea). So the word "chocobo" is an instance of that. Cho-ko-re-to + bo-ru = cho-ko-bo, or chocobo.
And the very first chocobo in the game was in II, hiding in the forest just south of Kashuon. They were also fairly hidden in III; only a few people actually talked about them in-game. IV was the first one where they really became a mainstay of the series, and of course V was the first one where a chocobo actually obtained a personality. ![]() |

i think you guys are getting a little to litteral here
*and yes that was goiod work on where they got the idea i wish i could read japanese anyways chocobos probably (mythilogically) were a very sheltered species like the dodo (which would explain why most dont fly), exclusive to some forests how they evolved is unknown but man discovered them and exploited thier all terrain movement and ability to carry large weight to become the birds we know today This post has been edited by Cloud_Strife510 on 29th November 2003 16:56 -------------------- "Have you ever seen a baby do that before?" |

And while we're on this subject, why do Chocobos say, 'Wark'? Is this some kinda Japanese expression for 'Chirp' or 'Tweet'?

Which came first...the chocobo...or the egg???
Well I believe that the origin of the chocobo (in game origin) is implied that they came to be the same way every other living thing came to be, such as when the world was created by all those spirits in FF7, the spirits must have formed to make a Chocobo as well. Quote And while we're on this subject, why do Chocobos say, 'Wark'? Is this some kinda Japanese expression for 'Chirp' or 'Tweet'? I believe this is just like, oink or moo or perhaps ruff, this is just an Onomatopoeia, which is a word whose sound suggests its meaning. -------------------- Those with no names know no bounds |
