everyones got 'em so now i wanna hear 'em...

what kinds of tricks does everyone use to absolutely conquer FF6, especially early on? i'm not talking about hacking or cheating or anything like that, there are certain things that can be done in nearly every RPG to kind of bend the rules a little.

i just started a new FF6 file yesterday, which is the first time in about a year and a half, so now some of the things i like to do are coming back to me. i just finished up the part where terra becomes an esper, so heres what ive been doing so far:

-probably the most important thing you can do is unequip mog in the scene where the moogles help locke protect terra. he has a mithril shield and more importantly, a mithril pike equipped, which is very effective when equipped to edgar this early on... you can't buy the mithril pike until you reach nikeah with sabin cyan and gau, so its very effective having an attack power of 90 so early in the game (especially if you couple that with the atlas armlet and the genji glove that you find early on too), not to mention the defense boost from the shield.

-go into the secret passage at the traitor's house in south figaro the first time you get there, there's a lot of money in the basement and really helps you gear up at the shops with the best stuff available.

-when you're split up on the lete river, make sure to totally unequip people just before their scenarios end. that way, you can use the best equipment in each scenario, instead of being stuck using someone with relatively weak armor and bad relics. this helps because cyan and shadow dont really come with what you would call premium equipment.

-in terra's scenario, when youre going through the narshe caves, keep messing up at the security checkpoint and fight as many dark sides as you can, they give you a lot of gold, so you can beef up your wallet to go shopping later. make sure to get the rune edge off to the left side of the moogle room.

-do locke's scenario first, then terra's and sabin's scenario last, and shadow will be with you the longest (all the way to baren falls). i think this is pretty well known, but some people dont know how to keep shadow around, and it helps a lot to have a 3 character party against the phantom train. unequip shadow before you enter baren falls.

-pretty obvious, but worth mentioning, in the battle for the esper, make one party with terra, celes, edgar, and sabin. equip them with the very best equipment, and kill every enemy on the mountain. its a fairly poor way to level up, but puts lots of money in your pocket. put locke and cyan to the right of banon with some decent equipment, and put gau in front all by himself, and equip him with what you got left, he's a one man army, especially this early in the game, he can handle a party of enemies without much trouble.

those are just a few of the things i got for now, nothing really spectacular, but they help the game along a little bit. let's hear everyone elses ways of making the game a little easier and tricks theyve learned to do.

Tip for getting a lot of GP: Fight as many random battles as you can, without going out and fighting just for money or experience. That means, instead of running from those tough random battles near a town or castle, lay it on thick (but try not to use any items)--those monsters will most probably cough up some nice GP and experience, not to mention magic points later on. If you take the time to try to learn every spell, you'll get way more GP than you'll ever need.

In the Narshe hills battle, I advocate this strategy:
Terra, Cyan: Cyan's Dispatch can KO one trooper/fidor in one hit, but he will have problems healing himself. Bring Terra along to heal him and to fight occasionally. Don't use offensive magic, though, since it's not worth it.
Celes, Sabin: Sabin should be able to KO everything in one Fire Dance; if not he can still do as well as Cyan with Pummel. He also has more HP than Cyan. Celes here serves the same function as does Terra in the other team: healing, and occasional attacking. Again, don't use offensive magic; it's not worth it.
Edgar, Gau, Locke: Edgar should always use Bio Blaster, so that even if he doesn't KO the enemies, he poisons them. Gau should choose a quite useful rage, such as Stray Cat (Catscratch), Bomb (Blaze), Templar (Fire 2), or Aspik (Gigavolt). Locke should either steal or attack--it doesn't really matter.
Against Kefka's main guard: use your strongest party, preferably Edgar, Gau, and Locke if you haven't run out of healing items yet. If you're running low on items, use Terra's party first, then Celes's party, then Edgar's party.
Against Kefka: follow above strategy for his main guard.

When going through the burning house in Thamasa, DO NOT equip the Shiva esper on Strago. Equip it on Terra or (preferably) Locke, and use it only in the final battle. Unless you're playing a low-level game, don't bother using magic against the balloons--they're too easy to kill with physical attacks. Have Terra use Ice 2, Locke use Shiva then Ice 2, and Strago use Aqua Rake against the boss.

Don't jump back onto the airship while you're on the Floating Continent unless you want more experience and don't want Shadow.

The Storm lore (performed by Gau's Ogor or Orog rage--I forget which--and Umaro with the Blizzard Orb) hits both sides of the screen, even though it only appears on one side, in a pincer attack.

Steal Mithril Claws from the Rhinox's outside of Sabin's Mountain, the place where you fight Vargas.

I have a tip for fighting the TunnelArmr.
Whenever you get to him, use the Thunder Rod on him. Dies in 1 turn. =)

Also, you can use a Fenix Down on the Phantom Train. =)

Make sure you get Gau's good Rages on the Veldt.(Stray Cat[cat scratch], Ghost[bolt2], Pterodon[fire ball], Marshal[wind slash]"i think", Madam[love token]..I'm not sure if Madam is open at this point, so I dunno.)

Steal Cure Rings and Genji Gloves from the monsters on the Floating Continent. Cure Rings from the "Goblins" I think, they have the same picture as the Goblins. You can steal Genji Gloves from the dragons on the floating continent as well.

When you get to the colliseum, right after you find Setzer in the WoR. Go to the Colliseum and bet an Imp Halberd and all the winnings from it. [Imp Halberd, then whatever you win, then whatever you win, etc ...] Bet those over and over til' you win Marvel Shoes.

Those are some of the things I do in my games.

While it is true that you can defeat the Tunnel Armor with 1 use of the ThunderRod, it is better to save the Thunder Rod for the 2 Cranes battle. The Tunnel Armor is easy to beat with a low level party, even easier in a standard game with no self-imposed sanctions. As for the 2 Cranes, set up your highest Magic Power character (should be Gau at this point sans specifically devoted MP Esper level ups) and give him 2 Earrings. Use the ThunderRod on the Right Crane and it will die.

Another note about that battle, as soon as one Crane dies, the remaining one casts Tek Barrier which includes a Reflect spell. So dont RAGE Gau with any reflectable spells.

The 2 Cranes battle is by far the hardest battle in a low level game...when you dont have the ThunderRod. *frown* learned that the hard way recently.

So, hold up, when in this point of the game can you even attain a ThunderRod? By Stealing? I've recently started a new file to FF6 and noticed nowhere to acquire one before this.

To get a ThunderRod early in the game (for use on the Crane)
Possible spoilers: highlight to view

leave the chests in the WOB Figaro Caves alone. Return to the caves during Locke's scenario. It is the chest in the far northeast of the caves.

IMO, I would rather...

Leave the chests alone, and wait until the WoR and get much better prizes, because TunnelArmr was easy anyways.

I've never played a low-level game, but the cranes were a piece of cake in my normal game. As I remember, I had Edgar drill them, Sabin Fire Dance, and Locke attack and steal with the Thie..."TreasureHunterKnife". Setzer was extrememly useful, since with his Chocobop slot move, he would attack both cranes at once. In just one or two rounds, one crane fell, and the other fell in another one or two rounds more. Zeppelin, author of the FFVI walkthrough on rpgclassics.com, also agrees that they were a piece of cake.

Answer "No" to Bannon everytime when he asks Terra if she'll help the Returners three times and get a Genji Glove instead of a Gauntlet from the guy.

Finding Doom Gaze: Doom Gaze stays at a certain point on the world map until you run into it. If it escapes before you kill it, it moves to a different, randomly selected spot in the sky. Therefore, if you want to find it, make sure you cover every spot on the map.

Heh, this is more like a general advice thread.

Defeat the Telstar at the emperial base by Doma. Telstar gives you a Green Beret. Then fight more Telstars on the Veldt and collect a few more Green Berets. These helmets are useful through most of the WoB.

On Mt. Kolts (place where you fight Vargas), use Noiseblaster in battles where Dark Winds are present. Dark Winds will cast break on themselves and accompanying enemies. Buy Star Pendants in South Figaro before going to Mt. Kolts to protect against Bane Touch (Poison).

Speaking of the Noiseblaster, if you use it on Pterodons in the Lete River, they will cast Fireball on themselves. It's effective, but more importantly it looks cool. biggrin.gif

Use Shadow Edges on Shadow. Most enemies at that point in the game can't cast magic, so he becomes nearly invulnerable. Speaking of vanish, this spell makes the trip across the floating continent a lot easier.

When fighting Kefka in Narshe I always bring Celes along for Runic. Kefka's spells are painful that early in the game. With Runic any threat from Kefka is pretty much gone.

When fighting Ultros at the Opera House, have Gau use the Templar rage. Fire 2 beats Ultros in about 2-4 hits. Very easy.

I use Aurabolt, Quardra Slam, Catscratch and 7-Flush on the cranes. They die really fast.

Cast slow on bosses.

Chaos Knight...i taught you all those skills! bah! i wanted to post those! mad.gif

well, here are a few.

1.when you are just terra, AT THE BEGINNING, leave all the chests alone when in the moogle cave. come back in the WoR. and they become
-Pod bracelet
-Ribbon
-Elixir
-something else, but uh...i dont remember exactly what it was.

2.The name of the monks (i think its brawler) on the mountain you get sabin, well, you can steal bandana's from them. good stuff. further more, you can find an atlus armlet there. however, i shall not reveal its location, BECAUSE--well, you should find it on your own. not too hard. look around. hint, its close to the gaurdian.

3.There is a memento ring upstairs of relm's room. the box is invisible, and by the table. get it. you figure out who else can equip it.

4. use the thunder rod on whomever you feel is the most difficult. im not sure what it turned into, but it think its along the lines of a x-potion or an ether. much more use outta thunder rod at the beginning of the game.

5. In Locke's town(i know the name, but i cant spell it sleep.gif ) if you take a team of three, Shadow will join you. Probably known by everybody by now but whatever.

6. You can steal a mithril knife from the marshal. pretty good for locke i guess. and yes, his rage is the fabled "wind slash" that kicks SO much ass! no, madam's arent open until the WoR, and im almost positive youre thinking of the Barb-e. I dunno, maybe the madam's do it too.

7.put a merit award on gau, make sure he has the tempest on, and well..haha. its really cool. make sure you use the stray cat rage though.

8. you can get all the way to "strato" for cyan by betting the murasame(at the arena). takes a while, and sometimes hard, but a damn good weapon.

9. there is a white cape in the returner hideout, find it.

10. if you help the wounded soldier enough in molbiz(bez? i dont remember) youll eventually recieve the tintinabar. not really special, but nice i guess wacko.gif

11. there is a zeypher cape, and gold equipment in vector. helpful at this point. also, there is a break blade.

12. when you land on the continent of the empire, dont rush into vector. its a big place, with alotta towns. not to mention they have chocobo stables in a forest close to them. bet there is a nice weapon/armor shop there. probably worth checking out.

well, right off the bat, that is that can come to me. if i think of anymore, ill try to post them. oh yeah, im sorry being so vague about the locations. well--no im not. i had to find them on my own, and you should too. also, im really lazy and i dont feel like explaining everything out to you people. good luck people! (you probably wont need it though).

You can steal a rarely-noted 3RD memento ring from Wrexsoul. It's hard though, with his using Zinger all the time.

I checked that online. If you bet a Memento Ring, you get a Memento Ring back for defeating Chupon. (Don't ask why that's the case.)

yeah, like let you control your character. i am POSITIVE the people who came up with the idea of NPC playing are howling, yes HOWLING, with laughter. here is an example of how a fight went once when i used terra:
1.battle starts
2.she casts life2, ON HERSELF
3.she blocks it

4.repeat process

THAT WAS SO DAMN ANNOYING!

I think one of the cranes either is resistant or absorbs lightning element, so you would have to destroy the correct crane first (I forget which one). I remember that the fight was really easy, though, especially with Setzer's Chocobop slot.

i have a lot to say ^^ (although they'll be on www.doma.tk ...if u don't know the site...)

1. unequip terra b4 fight against marshal (and equipt mog and locke)
2. unequip mog b4 fighting marshal, if locke's in ur party, steal mithril knife (well who cares)
3. leave the treasure chest with monster-in-a-box in narshe so Mog can get new dance
4. make sure u purchase noiseblaster. helpful against m-tek armor and in cave. (and later)
5. steal mithril claw, and bandana from brawler
basement in s. figaro? well it's only money fo now, no biggy.
and i don't fight those 'security' monster in narshe, too scary sad.gif
6. if u rushed through the game too much, have locke steal tonics from m-tek armor in S. figaro. even he dies, you won't have "game over" but you'll still have ur tonic :-D ..not the useful though
7. When gau first joins the party. Get at least hazer or templars, if not weakers ones aren't that bad.
8. use retort when u have party less then 2 or with relic that covers others
9. use imp on hadesgigas
10. don't get runic blade. If u do, don't equip it on magic characters (sorry, common sense) ... if u get it in WoR, it's ribbon (i'm pretty sure everyone know where other 2 ribbons are)
11. bolt/water/fire skeans are very powerful than you think.
12. if those wrench-using dudes pisses you off in zozo with vanish while you have no MP, confuse them with noiseblaster. You'll see funny reactions, but it's nothing serious, they cast vanish on themselves again and they are now visible.
13. Ultros may seem easy, but don't give him too much time. Level 3 spells are fine (what i90east said was da best strategy). But if you have it, ( i don't usually), use bolt 2 :-D the key is to rush him.
14. Have lotta Pheonix down/life spells ready in esper's cave, you'll normally gain more pheonix down than how much you use.
15. For monsters with life shaver, don't attack them too soon. If they have full life, life shaver can't hurt you. Simply, kill other monsters first and kill one at a time, not moves that attack multiple targets. If you don't do this against monsters with High HP, you will die with 1 lifeshaver.
16. This is not always true, but most undeads are weak against fire (some absorb it though)
17. steal +learn lore is pretty useful in floating continent
18. Magic is pretty usuful in mystic mountain
19. my fav level up bonus - magic
20. gau's easier to get than cyan. Steal lotta items in veldt! + more rage! (life3)(fire3)
21. quake is strong compared to how much MP it requires. use it with gaia gear
22. in operat house (wor) instead of using float, use gaia gear.
23. Drain is more useful in WoR. Use it as often as cure wink.gif
24. instead of using thief glove, use gengi glove...or both, but gengi glove + sneak ring isn't only good combination to steal
25. don't use blow fish, use atma weapon (cactars are easy now wink.gif)
26. Use odin to get speed (lvl up bonus) b4 you turn it into raiden
27. +magic items may not sound must help individually, but guess again (2 earrings, or 1 gengi glove and other item with magus, revenge(?) rods, circulet, or magus hat, and armor that increase ur magic ( i think white dress or something)
28. I only used Ultima in fanatics tower (and life3 tongue.gif )
29. Don't forgot to get items in WoB after banquet O.o ...i did...
30. When you get the scared child in falling house with celes, don't try to get every chest in the items. honest, some are crappy
31. Use Bio to poison multiple enemies, if you are fight high level monsters, even they are weak against bio, it won't do much damage.
32. I wanna try this someday...cold ring + rouletin... and death :-D
33. always carry elemental/primary non elemental/ weapon and shields and put on top (if u don wana go all the way bottom).
34. Stock up dried meat to 99 or close, you won't be able to buy them in WoR
35. Cure Ring is pretty useful wen you are fighting mass, but weak monsters.

here's one thing i do not get. I thought having edgar or sabin (or both) allow you to buy items for half price in figaro castle. This does not work anymore. Can anyone tell me why? O.o

i tried it with sabin and him and the merchant had the little conversation, but it didnt lower the prices at all... it only works with edgar on my game.

Let's see... all the ones I've used are already posted but let me try.

1. Wind Slash... best rage ever. This makes Gau able to kill a group of monsters very easily.

2. Gaia Gear and the Dirt Dragon. This is one of the easiest battles ever. Gaia Gear is REALLY useful in the end of the WOB and very early WOR, so you'll have them anyway from around then. Buying four Cherub Downs is a waste of money, you can keep Gaia Gears from those days... that means you can beat the Dirt Dragon down EASILY once you get the airship, give all four Gaia Gears and the Quakes and Slides heal them...

3. Gaia Gear and Lifeshaver. Somehow, Gaia Gears make Lifeshaver heal your party.

4. Undead... kill them with Revivify, Life, or a Fenix Down. or an X-Potion or an Elixir. This kills SrBemehoth(2nd version) and the Phantom Train, also Kills Zombones and Ings and most other Undeadish creatures.

5. If you know a boss uses L ? Pearl, make sure none of your levels divide into the last digit of your gold before you fight it.

6. Fire Knuckles. Ultros. Kill.

7. Palidor is on the Solitary Island.

8. Mix and match your espers. GIve someone Fenrir and switch to ZoneSeek after they learn Warp and X-Zone. ZoneSeek has Stop x5, Fenrir is x3. Saves time.

that last one you said is very true... once you learn spells exclusive to that esper, switch to another one to learn the additonal spells a LOT faster. it takes a little bit of thinking about it, but it saves a LOT of time and boredom.

Also get Sraphim as soon as possible, that x8(I think?) Cure2 is really worth it on the WOB... for Floating Continent you want most of your characters to have Cure2 and Life, at least more than 1.
