I've seen Shadow's character class listed as "assassin", but I'm pretty darn sure it's "ninja" (as I believe many others would agree. What is it anyways?
I think "assassin" would be less of a class and more of an occupation, while "ninja" is his actual class. how about a ninja-assasin?
he can wear ninja gear (so can others) but no one really refers to him as a ninja in the game, do they? i think he is best described as a mercenary. |

Ninja, mercenary is just what he does for a living. You can be an assasain monk, or a mercenary mechanic right?

assasain guys. i looked it up. in the japanese version all characters have real class names and shadow's class is called assasain.
http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/snes/file/f...differences.txt go there, it has i think all of the JAP/AME differences. i especially love the class name for umaro. the snowman -------------------- once you can accept yourself, you will never be alone |

i was reading the us/jap version differences mentioned above.
someone told me that in the japan version, instead of just betting the striker to get shadow, you enter a tournament at the opera house. anyone able to verify/disclaim this? |

They have always refered to him as assasain. Remember when one guy during the game said that he would slit his own mothers throat for a dime. I think that really shows that Shadow is an assasain.

So he would be an assassin with the skills of a ninja, I guess?
And by the way, as I remember, that quote about slitting throats mentions a nickel, not a dime, and is spoken by Edgar. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. It can be both. I do agree ninja is more like a job than assassin. An black mage can be an assassin.

All the guys at Kohlingen, when you're heading down to Jidoor for the first time in the World of Balance, say things like "That guy's an assassin!" when they see Shadow sitting at the bar. So I'd probably classify him as an assassin more than a ninja. Or, like GMH said, an assassin with Ninja skills.
Also, it's Edgar that talks about Shadow in the South Figaro bar because it's Locke who goes up to Shadow and demands a response. Then Edgar pushes him away. -------------------- Hey, put the cellphone down for a while In the night there is something wild Can you hear it breathing? Mercenary .. Ninja .. Assassin...
Shadow is an Assassin. The way he does it, it does not matter. He says he lives his life with no emotion. Why? Because he's paid to kill people. Shadow = Assassin He throws Ninja Stars, yes, but he's still an Assassin. He also throws Atma Weapons, how many Ninjas do that? -------------------- Quote My life is a chip in your pile. As I remember that depends on who's the first character in your party, but I may be mistaken. Quote He also throws Atma Weapons, how many Ninjas do that? Well, how many assassins throw Atma Weapons? And as whoever said it before, assassin is more of a job than a character class: a black mage could be an assassin. Not all assassins are ninjas, and not all ninjas are assassins either. So really, you're saying that everyone is wrong? In my opinion, the character classes ARE jobs. There's no reason to say "oh, he can't be an assassin, because that's a job." Ninja could also be considered a job. So could Random Person, if you wanted to take it that far. I'll stick with what the Japanese game called him, and what we call him on his bio here: Assassin. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

I beleive in chinese culture, ninja's were considered assasains. That is why they have weapons such as dagger and throwing stars. There were meant to kill their victims quickly.

I'd go with Shadow being an assassin, for the reasons Josh mentioned. Wait...if "assassin" and "mercenary" were character classes, what kinds of skills would they have? I know ninjas generally are able to throw things, and black mages (obviously) cast black magic, but what can these two classes do?
