i'm just curious, i know a lot of people have their own methods...

i do mine one at a time...

my first character to 99 is almost always sabin... with key spells such as life two and three, and cure three... armed with either a genji glove and offering with two tiger fangs or just offering with one tiger fangs and a decent sheild, usually genji, and an economizer. once he's maxed out. i'll take him with whichever character i max out next... usually terra... i'll have the two person party so i dont' lose my focus on esper bonuses.

the new character to max out is well equipped for defense... and obviously an exp. egg. with either a pod bracelet or safety bit... and back row. but is pointless with the pincer attack from t rex's or the rarer back attack from a brachosaur.

once finished with levels with bonuses, i'll have the maxed character learn remaining magic while the new charater levels. up... it's faster than doing levels for everyone, then doing magic for everyone. which is what my younger, dumber self would do years ago.

plus the occasional economizer is nice too.

hope i didn't forget anything.

I train 'em all together. Four level 70's is better than two level 90's and two level 50's. It's a team effort. The 9999 damage cap makes ultra powerful characters a waste. When it comes to magic, I teach my characters the best and most useful spells first like Fire 3, Ice 3, Bolt 3, Cure 3, Life 2, Life 3, Pearl, Flare and Ultima. Everyone knows all spells by level 55. After every battle I go to the character status screen and flip through the different characters with the L & R buttons. When someone is getting close to leveling up, it's time to equip the proper esper. By the time I'm done all characters have even stats, with 60-70 vigor, speed, stamina and magic power.

I only choose characters that either have decent stats to begin with, or ones that have a useful ability. My best group consists of Gau, Edgar, Celes and Cyan. Gau's a tank and has the 9999 HP damage non-elemental Catscratch, Edgar is the Gem Box guy that casts Life 2, Life 3 and Cure 3 on the party along with a 6000 HP damage evasion immune drill attack, Celes has the 9999 HP fight command with the Pearl casting Illumina, and Cyan hits hard with Quadra Slice, using Empowerer to heal himself (he gets hurt easily). I used this party in my expert version of the game. When Gau dies, Life 3 brings him back. I then have the option of making him a dedicated attacker again, or heal the party. If you spend too much time healing your party, you'll never defeat the enemy! The final bosses in my expert version heal themselves often just like you do.

I equip all characters with Cure Rings. Gau gets a White Cape. Edgar gets a Gem Box. Celes gets a Black Belt. Cyan gets a Pod Bracelet.

Gau and Celes block most attacks.

I traditionally do NOT max out my characters; rather, I beat the game with characters at a reasonable level. That's partially because I don't see the point of making ultra-powerful characters that make the rest of the game extremely easy, and partially because I don't have the patience. I personally don't care too much about leveling, but care more about gaining things like magic points here (or ABP in FFV, for example). Usually, leveling up takes place simultaneously as stuff like those things.

I usually only fight random battles in FFVI to gain magic points and learn spells. I care very little about esper leveling bonuses; they just come as a positive side effect. When I think a certain character is behind the rest of my team, I just slap on the Exp. Egg and put that character in my current team. (When I go out and learn magic I often bring my lowest-level characters so that they gain experience as well. This explains why I also take Umaro and Gogo, since they can't learn magic from espers.)

For Magic Points, GP, uncursing the shield; Maranda desert, full party if no characters are powerful enough for me to comfortably put out alone.

For experience; Tyranosaur forest, alone, if not possible/too difficult for leisure due to lack of power, the plains surrounding the forest, with use of Vanish or Fader.

I have one person on my team and fight in battles around Cyan's old castle home. I also equip the exp egg so I can just soak in all the exp I want.

in wor i use the desert outside maranda for leveling up my magic. you get either 5 or 10 mp per battle and the enemies (hoover and cactrot) are pretty simple given the right equipment. by level 40 any character should have all the magic spells and more than enough hp. once you have a few powerful spells you can go to the aforementioned dinosaur forest for major experience points.
in wob i think the gathering place of the espers has the best magic/experience points available.

I keep them moderately close together

Then at the end I (before Kefka's tower) and level up heavily with the "experiance egg" relic at the dionasaur head shaped forest
(usually until all are level 70)

You shouldn't need levels that high to beat the game. I beat it with characters levels 46-51, and I didn't even use mky lv.51 character in the final battle (Strago, because I never lost enough characters to need him).

Being able to beat the game at level 50 is no fun. When I was younger I enjoyed making my party excessively powerful (four level 99s in the original version of the game, lol).

On the other hand, i90east, someone else commented (I think somewhere else within the CoN forum, as I recall) that FFVI is pretty much the only RPG he's ever played which doesn't need significant time away from the storyline to gain lots of experience to build up the characters.

And by the way, where do you live? Is it near Interstate 90?

Yeah, it seems like Square made FFVI for people who've never played a video game before. It kind of took away from the greatness of the game IMO. Fortunately there are ways to remedy the problem nowadays.

I live in the Chicago area, and went on a memorable vacation in the summer of 1999 to Boston. My cousins/aunt/uncle live there, and my family drove down I-90 East to get there. I hadn't been there since 1986 when I was 4. I came up with this username right after that trip.

I think it's actually a good thing that a player wouldn't have to do much out-of-plot leveling up, since the story's (arguably) the most important part of an RPG, and o.o.p.l.u. would detract from the focus on the storyline (unless you have the turbo button on an emulator, that is).

And I'm IN Boston--Cambridge, to be exact, but almost right on the shore of the Charles River.
