ive never been a big gau fan, but i notice that there exist a few on this website. ive been experimenting with him, and trying to develop him. what does everyone suggest as his ideal equip, and relics? how about his best rages (and from which monsters learned)?

I have heard that he is good when you equip him with a snow muffler.

Noobinator tagged it for you. The weapon Gau has equipped is voided when he goes into rage. Merit Award is useless since he can equip the Snow Muffler. Equip him with:

Relics
Marvel Shoes
Blackbelt

There you have it.

Armor
Snow Muffler

Everything else just use the best you got.

I have no equipment suggestions besides Tempest/Merit Award and *possibly* Offering (if you're into using that relic). The power Wind Slash has combined with Specials (examples; CatScratch, Gouge, Duster, etc.) makes Tempest a very nice weapon for Gau to use with certain Rages, or to some, all Rages, once available. For example, mix Tempest with CatScratch and you have a Wind Slash that does 4X damage. For another, mix it with Areneid's Numb, and you have an unblockable Stop spell that will stop all vulnerable enemies. Wind Slash comes out fairly often, making it even better. That's why I don't like the fact that Gau can't use the Merit Award on the PS versions, it would prevent me from using my Wind God strategies.

The only downfalls are that the Wind-elemental property is retained and the ailment Specials Gau has don't do damage, meaning Wind Slash won't do damage combined with them. But if you can get around the elemental property, there's very little reason to remove Tempest, especially when fighting groups.

"Templar (Fire 2, Safe) and Stray Cat (Catscratch) are the best when you first get Gau. As soon as you get the airship get Aspik (Giga Volt) which casts a monster variant of Bolt 3. These are what put Gau over the top in the WoB. Other good WoB rages include Brawler (Stone), Slamdancer (Ice 2), Hazer (Bolt 2), Ninja (Water Edge), Over-Mind (Elf Fire), Rain Man (Bolt 3), Behemoth (Meteor), Chimera (Aqua Rake), ChickenLip (Quake) and Wyvern (Cyclonic). Good WoR rages include Io (Flare Star), Retainer (Shock), Didalos (Merton), Vectaur (Pearl Wind), Spek Tor (Blaster), Enuo (CleanSweep), Prussian (Land Slide), Chaser (Plasma), Tom Thumb (Step Mine), Toe Cutter (Shrapnel), Harpiai (Aero), Rhyos (Surge), and PowerDemon (Flare)."

Relics:

"RunningShoes" is good for Gau since he attacks automatically (until you get to the WoR and boost his speed stat to 50+). The first "RunningShoes" you get is in Zozo up where Terra is. Gau's speed is already high, and this relic allows him to attack twice in the time it takes for everyone else to attack once.

Two *tiny* nitpicks: Rain Man doesn't appear in the WOB, you're thinking Aspik. Also, Chaser appears in the WOB. Otherwise, looks good.

well, i hope you mean running shoes in the WOB. cuz you can get the marvel shoes once you get to the WOR. i dont mean AS SOON AS you get there, but you can get em, well, as soon as you can gau. but thats only if your characters ar strong enough. good luck on that.

Anyways, there's a good-to-great list of rages that you can find in the "Kefka's Domain" section of the Moogle Cafe forum (pub69.ezboard.com/bthemooglecafe). I think it's under the "Rages" topic. I posted my personal list there, and I don't feel like re-posting it. However, I will mention these highlights:

not trying to nitpick, but not everything. there are a few exceptions:
atma weapon
cat hood
snow muffler
aw crap, there are more. ill look them up when i get home. until then, please wait on my revision!

There are a lot of exceptions. For one thing, the Merit Award does not affect any relics, items, etc.

A more accurate description would have been this; allows the wearer to equip many other weapons and armor that might not have been previously available.

Also, Atma Weapon is version-dependent. In FF3us, it's not allowed, but any version labeled FF6 does.

can actually say I have never optimized Gau as to me, he is worthless and I just find it boring as hell to get him to learn all his rages. He can sit on the airship while the real fighters take care of business on Kefka's tower as far as i am concerned.

when developing a character, you use espers to power up your characters stats like speed, stanima, magic power, hp%,mp%, which makes noticeable changes in the corresponding status menu. but which status does strength change, as there is no visible strength rating? battle power?
also, it is disapointing that only odin could improve your speed. i think raiden, as an improved odin, should give you speed +2 at level up.

BGrugby, who said you have to collect all of the rages? You just need the good ones. Gau's more of a "real fighter" than most of the other characters. You're missing out.

And I don't like the idea of getting all of Gau's Rages myself. The list gets long enough as-is, I don't need a ton of crap sitting in the list making my search for the right Rage that much more tedious. Get the ones you need and go.

i have nothing against gau persay (sp?) i just don't use him that much, i'd much rather control my characters if they're in a pinch.

one more of the exceptions for the merit award is the behemoth suit... which really sucks, that armor pwns... lovely stat boosters, and 94 def.

you don't have to use atma weapon for Gau. I mean, would you? Equiping weapon on Gau increase attack on his "already high" attack (I used cheats to use gau's attack command and Gau has highest attack damage with physical damage among all my characters, maybe my weapons suck ) I wouldn't use atma weapon on him. His base attack gets ignored them.

I will be there...

my favorite rages are:

Tyranosaur.-Meteo: Tired of getting bombed by enemies who casts meteo on you and wish you could use it too, then this rage is well suited for you.

Magic Urn: Cure 3, all-elemental absorb, immunity to nearly all ailments and Haste, Regen, Near Fatal, Clear (!), and Image. a very good set up if you needed a free cure 3 from someone

Stray Cat - CatScratch a very powerful Special at the begining of the game, definitely helpful with the mini battle 2.

Barb-e rage- Love token:
Acts like true knight, but it makes the enemies to protect Gau instead of a fellow party member taking the hit.

Ninja-Water Edge this is a thrown weapon like Shadow's, but this rage is free
