The news more or less broke yesterday and was rumored for far longer, but Sony's State of Play just announced it moments ago: Final Fantasy Tactics, the original and best, is back. The new version, subtitled "The Ivalice Chronicles," will be released on September 30, 2025.
Information is a little thin from the brief announcement video, but what we do know for sure is that the package will include a remastered version, with a new, high-resolution player interface and updated graphics, "fully voiced dialogue," and "additions and adjustments to the story." There will also be a version closer to the original, uniting "the graphics and gameplay of the original with the renowned War of the Lions translation." This does not make it clear that the retro version is actually War of the Lions, interestingly - it's not clear yet if that's just poor messaging or if they are including the original wholesale but only with the newer translation atop it. The game was announced without any platform information; the followup from Sony on the stream did specifically mention Playstation 5 (and Playstation 4), of course, but concrete confirmation at the time I type this for PC or other platforms is not there. It also calls the retro version "a faithful recreation of the 1997 original," which makes the commentary about WotL translation even more confusing. Preorders are opening up today - I'll add an AmaCoN link to this thread ASAP! |

Thanks to Kappa, who found the tweet from the official Final Fantasy account confirming release for pretty much every current platform:

My time has come--though my overburdened wallet must suffer.
It seems like the previous version will be the OG plus the WotL translation, but I'm wondering if there will be various option toggling to get both of the earlier versions in addition to the Ivalice Chronicles version. I'm not loving the idea of gatekeeping stuff behind preorders, but I guess that's just the capitalist hellscape we're stuck in. I am quite curious about the new interface [plenty of quality of life features like Job Level and JP Needed being front and center on each unit, plus turn order (which we might be able to toggle off/on)], but I'm especially interested in the way the movement range appears--since it appears quite similar to Triangle Strategy's, and I'm really hoping that one of the updates to Ivalice Chronicles includes Triangle Strategy's Simulation Mode. |

Got some physical preorder links for PS5 and Switch - those are the only ones up on AmaCoN so far.
https://amzn.to/3Ta1N6B (PS5) https://amzn.to/43PxYgG (Switch) I'm not a fan of gatekeeping any of the bonus items behind the digital version only, personally. The preorder bonuses are all kind of garbage or cosmetic, and I'm going to preorder anyway, so whatever. But not being able to get a physical copy and the actual new items is very frustrating. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

Quote (Glenn Magus Harvey @ 11th June 2025 22:46) *looks at trailer preview image* Now with 1% more noses? It’s always been a little weird how the character designs in FFT hew towards the classic FF games, but are lushly animated doing horrible things to each other. It’s one of those things that a longtime FF player just sort of accepts without thinking about it, I suppose. A nose, by any other name, lol This post has been edited by Spooniest on 12th June 2025 12:13 -------------------- X is blue. |

A new interview w/Director Kazutoyo Maehiro has come out RE: The Ivalice Chronicles..
WotL content did not make it (indeed it does not appear there's any new content, really), and it seems wild to me that apparently the original source code did not survive. |

Yeah, we were talking about this a lot in Discord yesterday - for me, this news has made things a bit less exciting for me. I still have preordered for two different platforms because there was really no way I wasn't going to, but I remain a fan of some of the additions in WotL and am kind of sad that they won't carry over. Losing the source code isn't a big surprise - I never even had a good source control system at my job until like 2007, so no surprise that games built in the 90s might be lacking - but it also does suck. ![]() -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

This would actually be the second game I've heard of where the source code didn't survive. (The other I know about is the first eXceed game.) I expect there are many others we just haven't heard about.
And darn, I didn't know it was a thing to simply overwrite the game data with a translation for a translated release. That said I don't know when they lost the source code and master data. Had they made War of the Lions by then? How did they make WotL anyway? Still it's impressive that they're basically reconstructing the game. Now I’m extra curious. What hidden inside jokes for FF fans did they toss in I wonder
![]() And, more to the point, how do you improve on WotL? The interview says they aimed for “a natural spoken dialogue flow,” or something like that, cuz everything is voiced now. This ought to be a fun little romp. This post has been edited by Spooniest on Today at 13:47 -------------------- X is blue. |
