I typically call the drink by brand, because the only Coke product I'll drink is Dr. Pepper. So I never say (In typical Micheal J. Fox, just lost your virginity chipperness) "Hey, can you pass me a Soda/Soda Pop/Pop?!" ..
Also, I want to know why someone decided to call carbonated beverages "Soft Drinks" .. What gives? It's not soft on my tongue, the feeling of the tiny bubbles popping on my tongue is crisp, refreshing, and cool. When I think "Soft Beverage" I think Wind City Breeze Tropical Paradise Smoothie, with extra Vanilla. Oh, and i90east, where I come from, if you say "Hey, pass me a cold one.." You're liable to be handed the nearest bottle of Beer, which is probably cold, because Beer doesn't stay warm where I come from. This is of course considering the fact I come from Virginia Beach, VA, on Planet Earth in the Multi-Verse Continuum of Universes. |

I say pop or the name-brand. Why? Because that's what my parents and everyone else said :-P I remember they called it soda in Archie comics, so I always associated that word with 50s and 60s culture.
Pop's pretty descriptive, I suppose. The bubbles pop. And pop is a POPular drink. I don't really drink it very much myself, but I'll call it pop to annoy my American friends sometimes ^-^ Sometimes they'll even say pop without meaning to, which is great. -------------------- I had an old signature. Now I've changed it. |

Quote (Elena99 @ 18th November 2003 09:51) I remember they called it soda in Archie comics, so I always associated that word with 50s and 60s culture. That's funny, because I always associated calling it "pop" as the old way. I always thought of it like what they would call the brandless Grape & Orange flavored soda in the '20s and '30s. kara's right, it is based on where you live, and I always thought soda was said in more places than pop. But I guess the poll results argue against that. -------------------- "I had to write four novels before they let me write comic books." -Brad Meltzer |

Soda if I'm picking between the two options, but otherwise I like to go a step more general and just use "Drink."

Yeah we actually got that from a beer commercial (for those who've seen it, it's the Heiniken (sp?) keg can one where the guy asks "Can you pass me a cold one?" and this huge keg comes flying at him, knocking him off the porch ![]() -------------------- FFXI (Siren server) Tauu the Windurstian Tarutaru! I didn't bother reading all the older posts, since it would be much of a waste of time to debate the names of two drinks. Oh, what would I prefer? Water. Yes, pure water. The hell with carbonated drinks, which I find it annoying to consume until 90% of the CO2 has bubbled off.

For me it's "soft drinks". But at a restaurant or something most of my friends and I just say the name of the drink we want. For example, Coke, 7-up, Sprite, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Iced Tea, etc.
