What do YOU say for a soft drink? I say Soda, but many around me say Tonic.
www.popvssoda.com is a nice site for this. We talked about this in chat, but I just had to post it.

Normally I'd close such an inane poll. And I might later anyway. But for now, Soda, because it's more descriptive of what you get.

I said soda because... that's... what I've... always... called it.
Seriously, how do you put a commentary on a poll like this!?

I say soda.

I actually had to do a research project on this topic for one of my linguistics classes. I've read a few papers on the subject, too. What you say is largely determined by where you live, which I guess isn't that surprising. But I live in Pittsburgh, where everyone says pop...and it drives me crazy.

I don't even drink carbonated beverages. pinch.gif

I say Coke, Dr. Pepper, drink, whatever, but rarely (if ever) "pop" or "soda".

well, i come from kentucky and most people call it coke. that is what we refer to everything as. we say coke because most of us infer that what we want IS a coca-cola, so when someone says that they do not have any, then we say what else wed rather have. but a normal sentence referring to cokes would be, "hey jake, go buy a box of cokes, will ya?". now that could mean anything. however, the one thing NOBODY wants are pepsi's. they are completely ignored with this saying. why do you ask? because, pepsi's SUCK.
this really messed up a girl who came to our school from iowa. she calls them "sodas" i believe, and we spent a whole period arguing about it. not just me and her, but the WHOLE class, and eventually the teaqcher got involved. talk about educational...

In my city, we call it coke. I don't really know why, but I suppose I will have to go with the noobinator's reasoning. I have always called it coke and everyone around me usually does the same. I find this to be an interesting subject sleep.gif .

Well, now, heres something. I call them 'soft drinks'.

The abbrivation of that, i assume, is Soda (SOft Drink- the 'a' is put in so the word isnt Sod ,which means a small divot of grass... i think.)

From my experience, it's definitely a regional thing. If you live on the north east coast, chances are you'll say soda. Now, as you start to go west, pop becomes more and more popular. Then, as you start to approach west coast, you'll have people saying soda. Now, I'm from the NYC area so I grew up saying soda. It was strange when I started going to college in Rochester and actually encountered people who said "Pop". I remember I was at a Friendly's one time, and the waitress asked me if I wanted more pop. I was seriously confused for a couple seconds. ^^

For the record, 'get ready to throw down' is supposed to mean like, Get ready to argue or something. Throw down = fight/argue/roar or such.
I find it interesting...strange how it depends on where you live. Like Tonic.

its definetly regional. no one in my country calls it tonic, no one calls it soda, they may say fizzy-pop, and they never ever call all soft drinks coke as a catch all term. To us, tonics=Buckfast! biggrin.gif

one last thing- the topic title is SUPPOSED to comment upon the actual topics point, not the fact its an aspiring flame war.... blink.gif

In my region (which is Ohio) we all call it pop, but I did have a professor from North Carolina that called it soda pop. I haven't heard the word soda pop since Mike Tyson's Punch Out with Soda Pop Pinskie (not sure how you spell it).

For those of you who say coke, what do you say if you want a 7-up or an orange soda or root beer? I've always found that strange. My mom told me that she called crayons crayolas when she was a kid, but there isn't that much of a difference between different brands of crayons.

those of us who do say coke genrally ask 'what kind of coke do you want.' so, if we want an orange soda, we say precisely that smile.gif

People who say coke, like myself, ask for the specified drink. Like if I want a mountain dew, I won't say at a restaurant, "I'll have a Coke" or they will get me Coca-Cola. Where I come from, we just use the term coke as a generalized term. Like if we want are going to get a drink, we say, "I'm going to get a Coke. I'll be right back.

And tmagic, we can say the same thing for you. You can say "I want a Soda" and the person will have to ask what kind do you want. So your statement is false. So in the end it isn't that strange.

No. I ask for a pop, they ask what kind, I say orange. You ask for a coke, they bring you a cola drink. Completely different.

We don't ask for coke unless we want a Coca Cola. In a restaurant when you order a drink do you ask for a generalized term for soda. No. You just ask for the name of the drink that you want. We just use coke as a generalized word for soft drinks.

I say the name of the soda
EXP:Sprite, pepsi, ginger Ale, when I am out ordering at a resturant. But If I was going food shopping I might say "Oh we need soda...What do we have for soda at home?"

Right, that's different from what the soda or pop people would do because you use a specific name for a general purpose also. So you must have been disagreeing because of a confusion about wording I guess.

For a non-specified drink, I use (and I've only heard people use) pop. But most people actually specify what kind they want, so actually you don't hear it alot. From Ontario btw.

I live right on the Wisconsin-Illinois border. Wisconsin people say soda, Illinois people say pop. Little kids say "daddy, can i get some sodie pop?". I use the two interchangeably. But if someone at school were to ask me I'd say pop, gotta represent Chi-Town still and all.

Hey I live in the Chicago area. Back in the 80's a lot of kids called it "soda pop". Now it's just pop. It's much easier to say than "soda" or "soda pop".

With my brother I call it a "cold one". When I say "Can you pass me a cold one?" he knows to get me a Vanilla Coke. laugh.gif
