the first time i used quasar resulted in me having to go to a hospital. that is the ABSOLUTE coolest spell in that game for me. i got tired of the omni-powerful ultima and never really cared for pearl. but quasar..... thumbup.gif

For some reason I have always been a fan of the meteor speel. I think it is a great spell in Final Fantasy VI and it was extremely useful on the magic tower. Not to mention that it is a classic spell in about all final fantasy's.

I voted for S. Cross. That, and N. Cross are the coolest, followed by Alexandr's attack.

I've always loved Pearl, just in general. I've always found it to be very powerful as well as really cool looking. I don't even know what's going on, but the spinning tunnel that you're placed in is really nicely done, particularly for SNES graphics.

I liked Fire3's animation. It had a cool "Rain of Fire" effect.

I voted Flare Star, but I have to say that FF VI's Ultima remains as the best version of the all FF serie (crappiest being FF VII's green throw up version)

Yeah, Ultima should always be a giant blue dome with stars...
In Kirby Super Star for the SNES, the 'Crash' ability makes Kirby do a large explosion that looks just like FFVI Ultima. Quite nifty.
Flare Star is still awesome...indeeed, seizurific.

I love Goner. The screen changes rainbow colors, then both the screen and the final boss change to a red palette, then that wild black splotchy thing with the horizontal red and white lines... it's great. That spell isn't nearly as powerful as it looks. Well in my version it does 9999 damage to all allies smile.gif

"Goner" for sure! It's the coolest spell ever in FFVI! Too bad it looks better than it works...It should have been a maximum damage spell.

But many of the spells listed look wonderful, so it was difficult to decide. But "Flare Star"? I have never thought that one was especially good-looking.

Good old 16-bit animations. I like Pearl because it usually meant the sweet sound of one-shot death against Tyranosaurs with more than 9999 HP. Good old Illumina.

Some spells that people may not remember:

Overcast: This is a rare spell in the original game (more common in my version). It's a full screen spinning mode 7 graphic that comes right at you. It consists of a dark blue background and light blue squares. Also, the spinning Life 3 sprite envelopes your characters, and the angels' skin color is dark grey. What this spell does is cause your characters to turn into zombies when they die. All affected players receive comdemn status as well.

Mind Blast: The monster's sprite becomes all wavy, then breaks apart as it flies horizontally across the screen. Then the screen turns white. One character receives random negative status ailments.

Train: A yellow 3D triangle spins in the middle of the screen, accompanied by a blue & white animated aura in the background. This causes blind and mute status to all players.

S. Cross: The background consists of blue and black horizontal lines which rise slowly. Little blue balls move away from you, while two large mode 7 light blue circles head towards you. This is an ice elemental attack that can hit one or all characters.

Since the topic is "Best Looking Full Screen Spell", to it's hands down "Goner."

I honestly don't remember the full animation of it but it was definitely 16-Bit bliss for me, or sex for my eyes..

Sorry, I have to say stupid weird stuff like that.

Side comment for i90east: wasn't S. Cross fire-elemental? I thought that was the case, and N. Cross was ice-elemental.

I still think those two are the coolest-looking. Though Goner comes in a close second.

Those two lores (N. and S. Cross) are two of the strangest attacks I've ever seen. I couldn't figure out what element they were until somebody told me about them, in fact.

I would have voted for Merton if it had been on there, but it wasn't, so yeah. happy.gif I voted for Flare Star. I'm not quite sure why, but I do remember playing it and thinking that it was the coolest animation ever. I can't picture it right now. Ultima was another neat one--but, then, it usually gets cool animations.

"N.Cross" wasn't hard, was it? Doesn't that one look like "Ice 2" on all characters with a blue background screen, plus the text "You'd best be frozen!" afterwards? Pretty boring animition, I'd say. Can't see why people would fancy it.

Wait--you're right, I was only confused about S. Cross, as I recall. I think I thought S. Cross was ice-elemental or something like that??

Goner is by miles the best looking spell, If anyone can tell me if there is a way to get this to be used by an Ally by hacking the rom or something, I will give them a cookie!

Ah, I will never forget the first time I saw Goner! I was but a wee lad and I was playing FFIII for the first time on my SNES. I had finally struggled through Kefka's tower and had basically crapped my pants with excitment that I was finally in the final battle. When Kefka used Goner on me, I was excited and nervous. Pretty colors!! I was ready to bust out a Megaelixer, and then...

Something like 1300 damage to my weakest character.

Still cool though.

Dirk Diggler, try changing a monster rage to Goner, like the Guard for example. Then every time Gau uses the Guard rage, he'll cast Goner. See if that works.

Hands down, Goner...but then again Goner had a lot of extras going for it, such as the painfully cool Dancing Mad track playing in the background, Kefka, and Kefka's dialogue before he casts Goner.

If Goner didn't have all of its extras, then I'd probably choose Pearl or Merton.
