So, I don't really think a topic like this has been made before, and at this point I don't think it matters too much. I'm sitting here at 3AM listening to Rod Stewart's Maggie May - a song that a lot of people I've met seem to really dislike, but I love it in a big part because my dad used to play particular records when I was an infant up through when I was growing up, and some of the songs stuck with me. Other songs I otherwise would likely not have had a particular relationship with, but for my parents playing them when I was tiny: Midnight Special by Creedence Clearwater Revival, Happy Together by The Turtles, and Sitting on the Dock of the Bay by Otis Redding. That's just off the top of my head, I bet I could come up with some more if I tried.
But what about you, CoN? Do you have any songs that have stuck with you your whole life? Time period doesn't matter, obviously, since all the songs I listed above are much older than I am. And they can definitely be songs no one else likes, no judgement here. I started this topic off by saying Rod Stewart, after all. These are the songs that do the best job making me feel peaceful, and I think everybody's got at least one like that. Riders on the Storm by the Doors. It's the first song I can remember because, well, my dad was high a lot, and would play the song on repeat

My dad, when I was young, listened to a lot of Three Dog Night, Janis Joplin, and Creedence, and I know this, but I don't really have any recollection of hearing them much myself. I just don't have the picture of having that much music in my early childhood that made enough of an impression that I have clear memories of it.
I would say that what I can really remember is probably from when I was a little bit older and we started going to a great number of classic car shows, first as visitors and later as exhibitors. Naturally, the soundtrack to a car show where most of the vehicles are Chevys and Fords from the fifties and sixties has a lot of music from those decades as well, so I can recall hearing a lot of early American rock and roll like Elvis, Buddy Holly, and Jerry Lee Lewis, with a healthy mix of Motown and later surfrock. That was the real soundtrack to most of my weekends during warm weather from the time I was 9 to 14, or so. I grew up on mostly classical music, with some videogame music, Kidsongs, Disney Sing-Along Songs. And then some oldies when my dad put on the radio in the car. And some other odd selections.
Odd selections included such things as the "Character Building Songs", an album of 20 quite tuneful melodies, many of which I can't seem to find anywhere else -- and it's a darn shame, since my casette tape is fading out. And yes, I am still fond of them. I grew up mostly listening to oldies and country -- this area didn't even get a rock station until '97, IIRC. Two I remember specifically were "El Paso" -- long before New Vegas exhausted most of my goodwill towards it! -- and Lefty Frizzell's "Saganaw, Michigan". Excepting those, though, I do remember the first time I heard Greensleeves, on some kind of musicbox recording thing...it left a big impression. Even now, I still have a fondness for it.

The Hands of Winter. This song I had to perform in middle school, for a choir concert. It stuck with me rather tightly. Really rang a chord with me.

The scores from Cinderella, Pocahontas, and Mulan are probably the most nostalgic for me (especially Cinderella). I also watched a lot of VeggieTales, so those songs, too, are a part of my childhood. I grew up in church, and I my church we mostly sing hymns and "contemporary Christian" music; and in a way, those were part of my upbringing. I didn't really listen to a whole lot of music as a kid, for the most part; I didn't get into music until my teen years, so most of the songs I heard were from movies or church.

As a child, my mother listened to all kinds of music spanning so many years. I'm going to just rattle off artists based on the record/8 track/tape/CD/MP3 player list she had.
The Doors Frankie Valli Marty Robbins Living colour Chet Atkins Lynyrd Skynrd Roy Orbison Uriah Heap Otis Redding Montrose Aretha Franklin Ted Nugent Jackie Wilson Santana Chuck Berry Chicago The Beatles Chubby checker Earth, Wind, and Fire Righteous Brothers Stevie wonder Dixie Cups Parliament Funkadelic Supremes Metallica Dr. Hook Black Sabbath Monkees Led Zeppelin Guess Who The Who Bee Gees Donna Summer Van Halen That's actually just on the first box I found. Needless to say, music was a huge part of my life growing up, and given my somewhat humble background, it, at times, was the only thing that kept me sane. -------------------- "So, are you a fan of the Fett?"
