I actually work with some pretty famous musicians, but I don't really want to say which show or which musicians, because there's kinda a respect for privacy for the company and the high-profile of said musicians. That being said, yeah, it's pretty awesome. I get paid well too, so my girlfriend enjoys that. blink.gif

I could tell you some crazy stories about some of the famous people I meet on a regular basis (but who really cares?) I will say one thing; the drummer from G'N'R (Steven Adler? Or was that the drummer for lamb of god.... I know both their last names are Adler....) anyway, they guy's a total heap of washout. His mother would come ask me for discounts (back when I was doing retail/drum shop nonsense). Pretty lame!

I currently serve tables.. not my idea of a great job, but while you're going to college there aren't very many jobs that are so easy and pay so well.

Ah, come on. I'm sure you got plenty of good stories. You get to hide behind a user name on the internets! happy.gif

My uncle owns Zanies Comedy Club down in Chicago and over the weekend he was telling me some great stories about Rodney Dangerfield (wow...just wow...WRONG) and George Carlin backstage. Good times.

Since I'm currently in high school, I only work during the summer. But when I do I double up most days selling concessions at our local pool and umpiring baseball games. At $16 a game (an hour and a half time limit) umpiring is probably the best paying job a high schooler can get.

Ha ha, I spent eight summers umpiring, DP, for the first three or four I was even umpiring games for kids older than me. smile.gif My dad and I were an umpiring crew together, so it was like awesome family time, too. Even better, he and I made a deal where I would even get part of his umpiring fee (because before I stared, he used to do it for free) in exchange for lawnmowing at home, etc.

In short, you're right, it's a fantastic summer job.

I just relocated myself to my parent's home. Not necessarily where I want to be, but getting school finished up is more important than sanity, right?

No job yet. I'm just working on an English Teaching degree.

New job for me; all the upheaval at the NBA kind of put me out of work, so now I'm on my second day at a casual games website as a web developer. Worse title, better pay, but so far nobody's given me any work to do. sad.gif

I'm a student in Northern Utah. Having returned to school 6 years after exiting high school, I am going to be a Math major, and plan on going into S.T.E.P. (Secondary Teacher Education Program)

I'm currently not working at a job though. sad.gif

Currently I am a student at the University of Toronto, studying sciences. I don't really know what kind of job I'm interested in getting though. I guess I'll go for my masters if I don't have any ideas by the end of my program.

Hey, here's another fun thread for me to necro, because I know most people who are still around CoN have changed it up in the last, you know, six-plus years.

But not me. I'm more senior now, obviously, and my pay's quite a bit better, but I've now been with the same company for six and a third years, writing code. I'm starting to feel the itch to change things up, but my pay is still good enough (and my benefits are great enough) to make me think long and hard before going elsewhere. I get (mostly) unlimited vacation days and the freedom to work from home regularly, and those two things are high on my personal list!

I also have to say, and if you've been around CoN long enough you'll likely agree, that this job has made me a better web developer by leaps and bounds. I see things now that I did for this site back five or six years ago and while they still work, I'd be embarrassed to show anyone who knows how I work now. smile.gif

Yeah, this thread is a blast from the past. I never did go to law school (dodged that bullet!) and ended up becoming a web developer. I only get a measly 10 vacation days per year, but on the other hand I do have an 'off-site' working arrangement with my company and only need to be on-site at critical times. This allows me to work from pretty much anywhere in the world with a good Internet connection, though I'm availing myself of this arrangement in a different manner than other folks my age might.

God, I love necro-ing. Last time I posted here, I was in highschool!

And yet, to say I have a "real job" now that I'm graduated from college is still a bit of a stretch biggrin.gif I'm a PhD student in the field of English Literature, so while I get paid and health insurance like a real adult, I'm still in coursework.

I have been hired by a Benevolent Coalition of Clerics to keep the Great Govt at bay by bombarding it monthly with Ancient XML Cannons. The Great Govt evolves though, so I have to evolve my cannons accordingly. I've already leveled up my cannons a bit, and am looking forward to improving them even more using more of my forging skills, of which I'm quite proud of at this point.

I study environmental science at college, focusing in stream hydraulics and forest ecology. I've done a lot of park service jobs in the past, and through some connections I'm probably going to find work as some kind of park ranger or field scientist for the park service or GIS.

This was me almost seven years ago. Ha!

I did end up working for the parks a bit, but I eventually found a job doing sewer inspections and utility analysis with the government. I did that for three years. Recently I got a desk job at the same branch, still using GIS for utility analysis, but mostly working with sewer contracts and permits and updating geodatabases of buildings and utilities.

I love lisp (Common Lisp) although its more of my language of choice for hobby projects (https://github.com/ahungry) than one used at work (programmer).

In the interim I graduated with a BA in English Lit, worked for a while as a writer for an SEO company, decided I hated working in SEO, went back to school and am now working on an MFA in Poetry, and looking into Creative Writing Ph.D. programs.

As for a job, full-time student and graduate instructor (Rhetoric & Composition and Introduction to Creative Writing), so my previous plans to go into teaching worked out just fine.

Huh. I don't think I ever posted in this thread, but that's not really surprising.

When I left the Navy in 2006, I decided to go back to school for something I truly enjoyed rather than remaining in the nuclear field. After graduating with a BS in geology in 2012, I started working for the National Park Service as a seasonal interpretive ranger. I did that for three seasons, first at Fossil Butte National Monument in Wyoming, then at Zion National Park in Utah, and finally at Oregon Caves National Monument in Oregon (which was last summer). I started graduate school in geology at Northern Arizona University last August, where I'm teaching labs as a graduate assistant in addition to working towards my MS. I'll be working as an interpretive park ranger at Grand Canyon National Park this summer. I'm not really sure which direction I'll go in after I finish my master's, but I'd like to work in the public sector in some capacity. I'm a poor graduate student at the moment, but I love the hell out of what I'm doing, especially my various positions with the Park Service.

Woo, I can post in this thread!

Let's see, in 2008, I was either unemployed or a food service worker. Through 2009-2014, I did a bunch of retail/food service work. I worked thirty hours on the weekends (Fri-Sat-Sun) some times, a few times fourteen hour shifts to fit the needs of the business, and then was told not to get overtime, and then was yelled at for asking to leave work early to not get overtime. Couldn't win for losing. My back hurt all the time, my schedule was erratic, and customers treat you like dirt. If it's sweltering hot, you still gotta sack groceries. If it's snowing so thick you can't even push the buggy out of the store, still gotta sack groceries. Every time a customer was rude, I remembered why I was in school and it made me that much more determined to get out of food service and retail.

Believe it or not I actually still liked the job! I had great coworkers and a lot of the customers were great.

Now, 2015, I'm in accounting! Barely though, an Accounting Specialist (Specialist is a nice way to say underling!). It's a decent enough job, though. I sit at a computer most of the day, get to listen to music at will, and have a good balance of down time and busy times. Once I graduate, I'll move on to an Accountant position, though for now my goal is to enjoy the small responsibility I have, network with the coworkers I have, and just get real-world experience as every job requires that.

Oh, and thank God I didn't go into business management!

biggrin.gif whoops. Silly me, not checking dates. Why's that? Did business go bad for you?

Well, maybe I shouldn't say that. Some part of me still has that entrepreneurial spirit in me. I'll just say this without going into too much detail. I have changed in my political view significantly--or should I say, radically--since I was a young CoNner (or is it CoNee?). Let's just say that entrepreneurship and business is not usually what one might associate with my political and economic beliefs...

Edit
...which, by the way, I feel is a shame. Why should capitalists have all the fun, so-to-speak? Why are they the risk-takers, innovators, creators and anti-capitalists aren't?

My efforts have now shifted focus from business to organizing or activism I should also say that I've not completely given up business, but now it has shifted to my support of worker-owned and worker-managed cooperatives. I would love to eventually start a coop myself or work in an already-existing coop. But I would only want to be an entrepreneur if it helps others, not just me.

I would also say that moving from business management allowed me to study political science and religious studies, both of which are my passion I think.

I haven't seen this topic before, but then I am hardly a regular these days unfortunately. It's not for lack of interest, but free time is increasingly difficult!

In 2008, I was graduating college and started as a sales representative at Verizon Wireless in a retail store. I met some great people there that I still have strong relationships with to this day, and the pay was good, but it was and still is the worst job I've had so far. They move people around a lot, and I was unfortunately (or fortunately?) transferred to a store in a BJ's Wholesale Club that was then sold to authorized retailers, and I lost my job.
In fact, it was exactly 2 years ago last Friday that this all happened!

Rochester, NY isn't exactly a haven of strong local businesses besides Wegmans (see Rochester's Xerox, Kodak, Bausch & Lomb for examples of what NOT to do in the business world), but I applied everywhere to get my foot in the door and work my way up. CooperVision gave me a reasonable start, and I've worked my way through CooperVision's acquisition of another company and got promoted to be a Sales Coordinator. I like it a lot more than being a sales rep, less stress and every day is completely different to keep it from being tedious.

I'm an actor, have been for 6 years and it's my only source of income.

...so as you can imagine, I'm pretty poor.

I've mostly worked in factories and in the manufacturing field since High School ended. I've served tables in a few places. I worked in a private club for about 15 months.

I can safely say that you won't meet more emotionally messed up people than you do working in the food service industry. Its disgusting, the way most of them treat each other, as well as the competition associated with the job.

As far as factories go, the people who work in factories usually never got out of the high school mentality. So they can be pretty manipulative and two-faced.

Right now though, I bottle and package vanilla extract and vanilla beans for an older couple who own their own business. They are great people to work for, incredibly nice and understanding. I found the job through a temp agency back in March and I haven't missed a day (I rarely if ever miss a day of work), so I don't have to worry about it so much but it certainly helps to be working for ethical, nice people for a change.

It is a minimum wage job, but I get full time hours, an hour for lunch and I can honestly say its one of the best jobs I have ever had, if not the best.

I did some college here and there. I have over 40 credits in the SUNY system, but never finished out my 2-year degree and can't afford to do so. Although, I know a ton of people who can't even find jobs with their 4 year degrees, let alone their 2 year degrees. So they end up serving tables and working in factories going into their 30s anyway.

In my spare time, I am a musician. I write my own music and I have 3 demos (about 14 or so songs) up on the internet. I just recently posted my first video on youtube, it is in my signature. It is an original composition called Isolated Pigeons In Abandoned Grain Mills.

Living the dream, I tell you. Although, I have come into contact with some musicians over in the UK who are upstart/underground. One even sings in a band that has performed on late night with Jules Holland. So there is that. Also. I'm under the impression that some very well known artists and bands have at least caught wind of my project, Dynamic Threads. IDK, it is a bit odd. Something happened to me a few years ago that suggests I made a small splash with my home recordings...but I can't say for sure.
