Or whichever finger you use to type.

If there's always going to be something wrong with fiction why not study something real? I have a feeling you're overall satisfied with FF. I see no justification to hate something you're not forced to believe in. That's why I want to enjoy it while it's here. I think the point is that it is fiction. Things that are fictional are a lot easier to look at and analyze than real-life events, because if something is fictional, it means nobody actually suffered because of it/no one is in any real danger. At the same time, they can be deeply symbolic and hold much deeper meaning than at first glance.

That's assuming that fiction is just a gigantic puzzle whose sole purpose is to be solved. This, for me at least, is not true at all. For me, it's getting to know a character and sympathizing with his/her own situation. I want to hate the bad guy, sometimes even sympathize with him at the same time. I want to love the good guy, and identify with him. For the Final Fantasy games, sometimes less was more, and my imagination filled in the rest. Whether I know the plot or not, that's beside the point.

It depends on the type and the quality. It can make you escape problems, or confront them. Fiction can be simple, or it can challenge readers, viewers, or players to use their brain power. Viewing too much fiction, playing too many games, getting stuck in your tv, etc. can be dangerous, but in moderation and with more intellectual pursuits added fiction can provide a great deal to your experience.

Oh, my. Where does one start. Let's give this a try.
Quote (Eagle Caller) It looks like to me we keep repeating threads. In response to tropes/cliches. First, you've said several times how "we keep repeating threads." I'm not at all sure what you're talking about. We try, through moderation, to keep threads from repeating if it makes sense to combine similar or identical topics. But you've never actually given me any concrete examples that would clarify if that's even what you're talking about, or even whether your "we" means "Caves of Narshe" or "the Internet" or "the entirety of human civilization." Quote I've come to notice that fiction is an escape from reality. To be semantic, anything fictional is an escape from reality to some degree, yes. Quote To brag a bit, fiction isn't for smart people. They can see right through the plot and/or able to rationalize it in time. Ugh. I want to debate this point but it's just so ridiculous, I can't. Anything I have to say about this quote just seems so obvious. Quote You are essentially spending time on something second rate. If there's always going to be something wrong with fiction why not study something real? Why, indeed? However, that question presumes that there is something "wrong" with fiction, which, as best as I can put together, you think is the fact that it's... fictional. You appear to be making an apples-to-oranges comparison between things that are "real" and things that are "fictional" and making a value judgement that one is better than the other, and that just doesn't pass the test of being a rational argument, if you ask me. Quote I have a feeling you're overall satisfied with FF. I see no justification to hate something you're not forced to believe in. That's why I want to enjoy it while it's here. I don't know of anyway to duplicate a real life event exactly. I suppose I'm pretty satisfied with Final Fantasy. I'm pretty satisfied with a lot of things. Some of them are fictional things that I enjoy, some of them are real things I enjoy. If that's not what you're trying to get at, though, I have one point to get across: I have no freaking idea what you're trying to say. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |
