I need some help with windows XP, my girly was trying to install American Mcgee's Alice on her computer. Well it won't install the second disk for some reason, well in the end I think it is because it isn't compatible with XP, I heard it has some kind of compatibility mode to run with programs that were meant for 95 or 98 but I never looked into it, I know nothing of XP. There seem to be a lot of computer-wise people here so I would appriciate some help.

xp is just a pain as a whole. my xp has like a virus or something where i CONSTANTLY get non-blockable popup ads through a messenger service from peopl advertising services to block the very type of messages theyre sending. sobering isnt it? since we're on the xp topic, in addition to the above topic because i often have a hard time getting things to install as well, if anyone can help me out as well, it would be much appreciated.

The best thing you can do about specific games/applications not installing/working properly with XP is to search the Web. If you don't find it as a common problem, it probably relates specifically to the configuration of the computer in question, in which case, there's not much any of us could do either.
Messenger popups aren't a virus, they're just a very, very poorly considered feature. To disable:

I know for a fact that Alice will run on XP, so that isn't the problem. Can you give us more information other than it won't install. Is it giving an error message? Is it randomly crashing during the instal? Have you checked the CD for scratches or dirt? More info please so we can help you.

I've also had this problem with XP, but they were for games I'd already beaten etc. so it wasn't a pain not to install them. But I'll second Elapidae, Alice works just fine here. Gotta be your own system.

I'll let you guys know when she does a system recovery, it crashed horribly. She's gotta get her XP CD and start over.

Definitely a problem with DirectX (specifically DirectSound), of some kind. The best thing I can suggest is to reinstall DirectX (probably best to get the latest version while you're at it - it certainly won't be as big as the maximum listed download size there, if you're using Windows 2000).
