Found a guy who for some reason really wanted my Dragon Ball Z Boudokai which I was trading in, and I traded it to him instead for Final Fantasy IX. Life is funny sometimes...

It'd be sub-par in a shooter, but this is a game where proper audio feedback is directly and fundamentally connected to the mechanics! How did they...why!? What the crap Squenix!

Since I last big post, I've been playing the following:
Steel Storm: Burning Retribution. This is a top-down shooter -- not a shmup, but like what you'd get if you took an FPS but looked down onto it from above. You control a hovertank that shoots at stuff. Starting with a couple basic weapons, you can pick up new weapons from levels and permanently unlock them when you finish with them equipped. WASD controls and mouse to shoot. There's a lot of stuff that can be blown up, though obviously blowing up the enemy is the most important part. (The enemy is sometimes a little indistinct though that may have been due to my not playing with the screen bright enough or the sound up enough.) One of the more interesting weapons so far (I've gotten a few levels in) is the MIRV -- it shoots rockets that launch up high and then come down on the enemy. Since most barriers to your hitting stuff (and stuff hitting you) are lateral, this means that you can bypass those barriers and hit enemies and still have cover from them. For direct, long-distance hits, though, there's always that giant lazor. There's a multiplayer mode to this game, but I haven't tried it yet. Also, I think from-behind third-person view is an unlockable once you beat the game. DuckTales Remastered. A complete remake of the NES DuckTales game. The level designs are similar, but contain many changes -- in fact, what used to be bonus areas are now often required. The game also now has voiced cutscenes (featuring Scrooge, Huey, Dewey, Louie, and a host of other characters), and plays out almost like an episode (or several) of DuckTales. There are also redesigned bosses, two extra stages, a bunch of unlockables, a money bin you can go swimming in, and a remixed soundtrack (with some new tracks) done by Jake Hoffman, a.k.a. virt (of Contra 4, Scurge: Hive, and Shantae series fame). And the game is no less difficult than its predecessor -- even in medium difficulty, even after you get all five life expansions (one in each stage -- and you can't keep anything if you don't finish the stage!), the final level will still have instant death traps and such. And if you remember the endgame...don't bet on it! Some people have criticized the frequency of the cutscenes, but I didn't think they're that excessive. Maybe a bit too many, but they can be skipped. (After you beat the game I've heard it's possible to turn them off completely, as well as switch to 8-bit soundtrack. But I haven't beaten it yet...) Anyway, this game is quite awesome. 100% Orange Juice: I've posted about this before, and now it's on Steam! And this is a new version with new features, such as: * larger-resolution version * completely reworked multiplayer, which now uses the Steam lobby system * more multiplayer features, including a level system (gives you minor perks such as the ability to play as the chicken NPC), and the ability to disallow the most * other standard Steam integration stuff such as achievements And it's just as chaotic and fun as it used to be -- a 4-player board game where you pick your cards to add to a common deck, and where you fight the other players for the lead in dice battles as you go around the board. It's still missing an in-game chat, but the official game group's group chat on Steam is currently serving as the de facto in-game chat. In any case, I recommend this. And you get to play against meeeeee~ (I still haven't won a single multiplayer game, fwiw.) Currently playing through Mass Effect 3 on insanity difficulty. Enjoying the challenge. Just finished ME2 on insane, great fun.
Also playing Dead Nation in co-op, top difficulty as well, wow that is crazy. So easy to die. Transistor is coming out today, that may distract me. -------------------- 'Let that be a lesson to all oppressive vegetable sellers.' |

I'm consistently playing rpg's, and am willing to try new ones. Right now, I'm getting started on the Romancing Saga and Tales of...franchises.
I'm thinking about a race with my friends, it's going to be a tough race with moderately difficult games. My first race would be Mega Man marathon. Mega Man 2 Mega man 3 Mega man X The second race would be fun. Super Mario USA Super Mario 3 Super Mario 2 (Japan) -------------------- "So, are you a fan of the Fett?" About to start Kingdom Hearts for the first time, courtesy of this 1.5 remix. I'm about 10 years late to the party (I always thought it looked "lame" when I was younger), but I know a lot of people swear by these games.
Anyone have any thoughts for me? I've had 9 hours on a plane and another 2 on trains in the past few days. I intended to use that time to give TWEWY a second chance (played the first hour ages ago and didn't like it), but I got distracted by replaying Persona 3 and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. Whoops. There's always the return flight.

Well, I put 11 hours into Kingdom Hearts. I just can't get into it.
Maybe it's just not being able to go back to the old era of video gaming. But I don't have the patience to try to jump on a mushroom, OOPS you pressed circle too hard so you jump over it, then you try again, oops again this time not hard enough, over and over. It's just little stuff like jumping and falling constantly because you have to master how hard you are pressing a button that I'm too lazy for. Also, despite all the familiar faces, the story just hasn't engaged me at all. Sephiroth could pop out and it just would be like "Oh ok". There's no build up or shocking moments in the story (thus far) like with FF7-FF10. When someone new appears, each time it's a quaint "Ah, I know them. K." And there's no background. It's just a smattering of characters thrown in and related for unknown reasons other than it's "their world" that you dropped into. It's like the last episode of Seinfeld. I'm supposed to get excited by the appearance of characters simply by the appearance of those characters. There's no in-game background of why Squall and Yuffie are hanging with each other. Just "worlds are disappearing". Sora has no idea who Aerith is, and the game doesn't take time to teach him. I want my in-game character to find out about these other FF or Disney characters, who they are, what their deal is. But other than some scenes to setup your main trio, it's just characters appearing and saying "Hmph." You had a little bit of intriguing character development with Riku and Kairi at the beginning (Sora and Riku "competing" over her and Selphie talking about wishing on a coconut or something), but since then it's been nada. -------------------- The clouds ran away, opened up the sky And one by one I watched every constellation die And there I was frozen, standing in my backyard Face to face, eye to eye, staring at the last star I should've known, walked all the way home To find that she wasn't here, I'm still all alone -Atmosphere "Always Coming Back Home to You" |

I watched a roommate play through KH in '02, and it never engaged me enough to want to play it myself. The concept felt forced--sort of a "let's mash up as many characters and worlds as possible just for the heck of it" kind of thing. That and I disagreed, to an extent, with how some of the characters were portrayed in the game, as they struck me as a bit out of character at the time.
I understand that it's dear to a good many people, but unfortunately, it never grabbed me. -------------------- This is a signature. You might think that there is something to it...but in fact it is just an ordinary signature. |

Been playing Black Sigil: Blade of the Exiled.
It's a "classical" 16-bit-style JRPG by a Canadian studio, originally conceived for the GBA in mind and later moved to the NDS. And it is one gorgeous game. I'm about halfway through the game -- the game is quite long; I'm guessing about 40 hours of content, though I go slower than most people and I'm sort of a completionist; HowLongToBeat gives an estimate of 15 to 35 hours depending on how much of that content you go through. This game really feels like a classic SNES JRPG in scope and style. The worldbuilding/setting is richly detailed, as is the script, which is quite large and has fun features such as getting a different reaction from NPCs depending on who your displayed party representative is on the map. The script is also well-written and interesting to read; it is accompanied by pretty and expressive character portraits representing characters depicted with quite richly detailed sprite work comparable to that of FFVI. The story also feels a bit like FFVI in the sense that, for the first half or of the game, your characters are fleeing an evil empire that seems bent on taking over the world. Perhaps the one twist is that, Possible spoilers: highlight to view The events that occur raise lots of questions, which persist on the minds of the characters (as they do in the mind of the player) even as they make hurried escape after hurried escape; the answers are slowly revealed as the plot moves forward. And just like FFVI, key to the story is people who can or can't use magic -- though in this case, your starting protagonist is unusual because he can't use magic, in a world where everyone can; unlike FFVI, the script more vividly illustrates NPCs' "racism" against the protagonist.instead of starting in that world, you actually start in another, and are transported unexpectedly into the world in which much of the game takes place. The soundtrack is excellent, also sounds quite reminiscent of style of a classical 16-bit JRPG, such as in the use of an ambient dorian/minor track for the second overworld theme, a folksy mixolydian track for a town theme, an ambient and creepy dungeon theme, and a title theme that sounds a little reminiscent of Golden Sun. In summary, a very beautiful soundtrack with memorable, tuneful tracks, by Jan Morgenstern (whom I have not heard of before). The battle system is unique, and combines traditional turn-based battling with some tactical aspects. Random enemy encounter formations don't just contain a set of positioned enemies, but also a specific battlefield and positions for your party members. Different party members have basic attacks and SP-costing abilities (such as magic) that have different range and area effects (e.g. only some characters have long-range basic attacks, while at least one character lacks area spells but only has single- and all-target spells). Each formation's battlefield may also contain a number of obstacles, which can limit the utility of certain characters in certain positions in the party, which may necessitate switching them out for another character, or changing the order of party members. Furthermore, characters can only bring usable items that they've equipped (and only in limited quantities) into battle. All these make the battles a bit more difficult than typical JRPG battles, though it helps a little that MP regenerates while walking around dungeons (like Golden Sun). Like in Chrono Trigger, you can have up to three active characters in your party, though you can only switch between them in safe areas (or save) areas and on the world map; they do also learn multi-character abilities. Unlike CT, you can now move your characters around as well, such as to place characters in range of a short-range mass-healing spell or to provide cover from basic attacks. The drawback to this is that the battles are kinda slow, and while the difficulty is a nice thing, random battles tend to happen rather frequently, making the gameplay a bit tedious. If you buy the game, you may want to instead play it on an emulator with a turbo feature; turbo + A button will save you a lot of time while you do backtracking. Overall, a very nice game! Just a little tedious on the random battles -- if they wanted something of this higher-than-typical degree of difficulty, I think should have designed the game to have fewer and more rewarding random encounters. Special thanks to Shotgunnova (who's here on CoN) for writing up the very detailed walkthrough and making all those color maps of this game. These resources can be found on GameFAQs. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. You can find me on the Fediverse! Well damn. That about covers them. If you have a PS2 and you enjoy Dragon Warrior, I have to recommend Dragon Quest VIII. It's my 2nd-favorite RPG on the PS2, after Persona 4. Here's what I'm playing:
Tactics Ogre: Let us Cling Together (PSP) The Final Fantasy Tactics lineage is very, very obvious here. I like the class and skill systems, the maps and basic functionality are excellent, and so far the story seems like it could be pretty cool. I played the GBA Tactics Ogre game last year and enjoyed it quite a bit, but a few hours in this one seems significantly better. Still weirded out by characters and class levels (no character levels; classes level up independently of characters; it's head-scratching), but I'll probably play this game on and off for awhile. Retro Game Challenge (DS) I wasn't going to make any game purchases until the fall, but I caved when I saw this game at a GameStop. I'd been curious about it for years. It's a collection of eight retro games and associated tasks, stylized to be Famicom games. The eight games were never real NES or Famicom games, but they seem like they could've been. In the game you collect game magazines to find codes, unlock secrets in each game, and basically play the role of a Japanese child excited about games in the 1980s. The eight games are two shmups, two Mario-esque arcade platformers, two rally racing games, one JRPG obviously inspired by Dragon Warrior II, and one action-adventure game that's kind of like NES Ninja Gaiden. So far they're all really fun. I'll definitely play that RPG way more than I ought to. Persona 2: Innocent Sin (PSP) I tried playing P2 a few years ago, but struggled with it. I hated how Persona creation and Arcana collection were handled, and all of the game's weird systems (rumormongers, spell fusion, etc.) sort of overwhelmed me. They were weird and obtuse, but seemed important. Anyhow, I'm using a guide to help get Arcana, and that's making it a little more tolerable. This is a neat game with some cool story ideas and a good cast, but it's not very player-friendly at all. I'll try and have this one finally finished by the end of the summer. Sonny 2 (Flash) I play Sonny 2 every couple of years. It had been awhile, so my save files were gone from whenever the last time I cleared out the cache was. Running a Cold Hydro build and going out of my way to earn some tricky achievements. Right at the end of Zone 2 right now; I'll probably finish this weekend. TL;DR video games -------------------- |

Thanks, laszlow. Those sound great!
I finished up FFIV this weekend and recently stumbled onto an unbelievably good deal on a PSP and A/V cables (all the better to see the screen with on my TV), so I decided to spring for a used copy of FFIV The Complete Collection so I could finally take a crack at Interlude and The After Years. Wrapped up Interlude in about 2 hours after dinner Sunday, and I'm almost to the end of Rydia's chapter in TAY at present. So far not too shabby, although the chapter-based nature of the game takes some getting used to. I'm having serious DQ4 flashbacks that way. ![]() This post has been edited by ChickenFriedChocobo on 16th June 2014 08:55 -------------------- This is a signature. Quote (laszlow @ 12th June 2014 22:52) TL;DR video games Ahahahaha all of that's out the window now. Beat Sonny 2, then started a new game of Dragon Age: Oranges. Beat the game twice already, now I'm on a third time with the only class I've haven't put hard time into. Rolling a Warrior, S&S tank, Dwarf Noble origin. Played the **** out of it this weekend. Done three of the four main midgame quests. So that's the plan. Beat DAO, Awakening, and DA2 before DA: Inquisition comes out later this year. No, I won't import a save file, because of this Dragon Age Keep business. I'll figure out what I want to go into that when 1) I replay those three games to refresh on what the core plot points are; 2) I see exactly how deep this Keep stuff goes; and 3) finally get that Arishok achievement. So yeah I like Dragon Age a lot and I am really, really excited for the third major one. Totally going to roll a Qunari Mage. -------------------- |

I played Dragon Age: Origins back when it came out, and I was really impressed. Haven't played any of the others yet, sadly. I know I'll get to them eventually, though.
I'd probably have finished FFIV: TAY by now, but a friend of mine tipped me off to a Humble Bundle sale featuring RPG Maker, and I fell down that rabbit hole. Way, way down. I have no particular delusions of grandeur regarding making my own game (meaning that I may well make one, but it will almost certainly be crap), but exploring the engine and the way things work "under the hood" is fascinating. I certainly have a whole lot more respect for the game design process as a result--especially since RPG maker basically holds your hand. -------------------- This is a signature. Quote (ChickenFriedChocobo @ 22nd June 2014 21:49) I played Dragon Age: Origins back when it came out, and I was really impressed. Haven't played any of the others yet, sadly. I know I'll get to them eventually, though. Dragon Age: Awakening, the short follow-up game to Origins is really good. It takes only 10-15 hours to complete, but you import your DA: Origins character and explore a new area and learn some new skills. Awakening does some SERIOUSLY weird stuff with the Dragon Age: Origins storyline, particularly about where the Darkspawn come from. The three core quests are each pretty good, and the five new characters are entertaining. Three of them show up in Dragon Age 2, but I liked them better in Awakening, for the most part. Dragon Age 2 is a hard sell. Its characters and dialog are really good. The skill system is much better than in DA: Origins. The main character, Hawke, is a voiced protagonist that is customizable by the player, similar to Shepard in Mass Effect. The battles move a little faster and controlling a Warrior or Rogue feels more impactful, but the high-camera view is gone from the PC version and some people feel the battles are less tactical. I disagree with that notion (I really like the changes to combat in DA2), but the combat has its critics. Now for DA2's rather serious flaws. There is only one major town - Kirkwall - and the game is divided into three "Acts." In each Act, you do more quests, exploring the same parts of Kirkwall, many of the same forests and caverns surrounding Kirkwall, and only occasionally encountering new environments. Dragon Age 2's map area is FAR smaller than that of Dragon Age: Origins, and because of the Age system you'll be exploring most of it three separate times. It's annoying. Kirkwall and its surroundings all get a little old. At least the characters have amusing banter.... You also can't freely equip new armor to your companions, many of the important plot points are immutable, and there is one major, pervasive subplot that was one of five or six major subplots in DA:O (Mages vs. Templars). So DA2 is smaller, has a less interesting narrative, and fewer ways to customize your characters. But the combat's better, the dialog is really good, and sometimes the story is pretty good. I like DA2 more than some other people on this forum, but I have to admit it has some serious issues. When I replay it sometime in July, I hope that it holds up. -------------------- |

I'm loving the hell outta Black Flag!
![]() Okay, so the game immediately goes drug dealer with a 'first taste is free' gambit having you start in a big pirate ship battle de jour, but then immediately yanks it away so you can Assass some Creeds for like three hours before you can Black Flag again. Oh, but once you do... Once I got a ship, I spent a good full hour dying over and over taking on ships I had no business attacking, but I didn't care. I could spend an entire game session doing absolutely nothing but fighting random ships. It's the most satisfying goddamned experience I've had with a modern vid'ja game in a good long while. Everything just works. The presentation, mechanics, design just click for me man. The AssCreed I could do without though. It's not bad, but this is my first console AssCreed and this guy just will not go where I want him to. I never really liked the traversal mechanics in AssCreed, but it's really frustrating in this game and the fact the Black Flag parts work so well in comparison just makes it worse. I do like that all the collectible crap is varied, but not overwhelming to the point of becoming tedious. I understand that's not an easy balance to hit, but they did IMHO. What's more important is they didn't gate it. Like, the game's story 'gently' nudges you towards grabbing all the crap lying around at various points, but didn't block anything behind these moments. I was damn near halfway through the story before it talked about Mayan statues, and I'd been collecting them since before I even got a ship. The only time it did was for one fort I couldn't take down until the story said so and by that time I was fully upgraded and had taken down literally every other fort already. Fun game. -------------------- |

Interesting, NP. A friend of mine was really trying to convince me to purchase that the other day and I realized I knew next to nothing about it. I really enjoyed the first AC game way back when and I know my brother liked the second, but I just haven't kept up with that series at all.
I've been revisiting a couple classics lately: FFIX and FFX. I'll usually sneak in a bit of FFIX time during the day, but by the time evening comes I get the urge to tinker with the FFX walkthrough I wrote a few years ago, and so I end up booting that up a bit as well. A friend of mine is supposedly lending me a copy of FFXIII-2, but I haven't seen anything in the mail yet... -------------------- Currently Playing : Final Fantasy V Most Recently Beat : Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Favorite Game : Final Fantasy X The newest CoNcast is up! Quote (Death Penalty @ 11th July 2014 01:31) A friend of mine is supposedly lending me a copy of FFXIII-2, but I haven't seen anything in the mail yet... I'm still playing that. I finished the main storyline a couple weeks back but have been picking it up every once in a while since to grab fragments I missed the first time through, including most of the paradox endings. I think I have eight fragments left to get at this point, but a few of them are going to be pretty brutal. I've been noodling with some of the games I got on Steam Sale both this summer and previously, too; I put a few hours into System Shock 2 and Scribblenauts Unlimited recently, and I'm getting close to having Saints Row IV complete with Tiddles, as well.
