What are those spinning wheel things, are they generating electricity? It's hard to tell if they're mounted to the house's walls (some are on rock walls though) or if they're just sitting on the ground.

Figured they were generators for the geothermal heat.

Good question!
My first guess was that they are meant to be cranes used to transport minerals from the mines. All, except one near the entrance, are on the hills. I don't think they are used for heat, because there are already furnaces there. -------------------- |

Yeah the idea that it's transporting minerals sounds plausible (I think I remember it looking like there was lumps moving along the belt/stringy thing?).

They could be a machine to help digging, perhaps? Or, it's just decoration!!

Yeah, the small/large pairs of wheels that are connected definitely look to me like they're part of a mining apparatus, but they surely wouldn't be very useful! That kind of setup between a small wheel and a larger wheel seems like a torque converter or an automobile-style transmission, though, and I have no idea what use that would really serve.
When I was looking at a video of these again before replying, I saw an even less useful spinning thing, though, that I don't remember ever really noticing before: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=playe...bFMPAw2v24#t=53 (it's on the building that Sabin walks under). All in all, I think I have to fall on the side of "LOL STEAMPUNK!" as to why these are here. ![]() -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

The spinning on the building is probably powered by wind; that is how it looks, anyway. I have no idea why I have not taken a closer look at these things before. Maybe it is because I already knew this game like the back of my hand by the time I really started getting into engineering and easter-eggs. I should look more closely at them next time I play. At any rate, spinning wheels with belts have countless uses. But yeah, "lol steampunk" definitely has a lot to do with it.

Outside fan, perhaps!? At least the conveyor belt has a possible purpose, more than decoration.
For a moment I thought that those spinning fans were gate controls, that could hold the rope and chain for the gate, but why would it continuously spin? -------------------- |
