Hey guys, new to the forums but FFVI has been my favorite game since release on SNES in 94. It never gets old to me, but its a whole new game playing on twitch. 12 hours to beat Vargas? No problem. Suplex the train? Unnecessary but we tried anyway. Come check out the progress we've made on twitchplaysjrpg's channel. Help out if you want, chat with people who just love this game, or sit back and listen to the best soundtrack for any game. Ever. WoR here we come!

i actually checked this out. was freakin great. the 10-20 second delay is really bad though, but if you can do things by memory (like i was doing) then you can get past the lag. just gotta wait till the video catches up.
so i did a chunk of the magitek research facility. did some battles, found the break blade, moved quite a bit, and now its boss time. EDIT: i changed the settings to NON-memory of the menus, and the full command list when in battle instead of the short. makes it a hell of a lot easier to use your memory of the commands and menus when you start over each time from the top EDIT 2: ok, so this would be great if the person running it would actually pay attention and realize that the emulator or whatever is completely mucked up. waste of a good idea. perhaps better execution next time? Waste of a good idea? Please, you try doing it perfectly. This is a new concept and problems are bound to happen. A little too spoiled I think.

WOW. hell of a reply. btw, it was a new concept before you ripped off the idea from twitchplayspokemon. had to jump on that bandwagon eh? and i simply stated my opinion. dont like it cause it goes against you, so what. its my opinion. dont get all pissy with me because YOUR stuff doesnt work for shit. theres a 20 second delay, the twitch chat is completely mucked up with this system, you have to use random caps. and not to mention that the emulator was completely mucked up a bit ago and wasnt responding. i bring all valid points to the table and all you can say is that i am spoiled? hahahaha. figures you would say one tiny quick response instead of anything relevant. |

Not interested in this becoming a flamewar, guys. That's not how we do things here.

First, wasn't me who's idea it was, so no need to flame me about that. Second, twitch delay is normal, having to use caps isn't random, its to prevent spamming the same thing, which needs to be done often in twitchplaysff6. Considering you said it was such a cool idea, all I'm saying is give it some time to work out the kinks, its barely two weeks old. You came off a little strong with your post, possibly turning away new people from trying it. Saying its a waste...? A lot of people are having fun working with the 20-30 sec delay. Trying to spread the word, not have this be a section where you tell everyone why its bad. My apologies if I think you acted spoiled.

Okay, can our new members pause for a moment, and explain what twitch play is?

I think it's just "Twitch plays" misspelled.
And by that it means everyone in the twitch.tv chat for that channel gets to input commands to the game. At the same time. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. You can find me on the Fediverse! "Twitch Plays Pokemon" has been a recent phenomenon that's actually pretty interesting / impressive. So naturally, there's going to be a "Twitch Plays ______" for just about every popular game imaginable. This thread is someone who joined CoN just to advertise a Final Fantasy one.

I found the Pokemon event to be very interesting as a social experiment if you want to look at it from an odd angle. It's reached more than 100,000 viewers / players at its highest traffic and still somehow they managed to beat the game. Despite how old it is and how base the idea of it is (Gotta Catch 'em All!) it is not as simple as it seems. The are quite challenging in places and making proper choices in both combat and item use in general are vital. Lack of in depth story aside, it makes for a fun challenge for a single player. Now, throw 100,000 players into the mix trying to control a single character.
It reached towards the old idea of "if you put and infinite number of chimpanzees in a room with typewriters, they will write Shakespeare' and gets very close to shining a little light of truth onto that idea. Beating a game might seem simple and unimportant, but with the number of people involved it gave us a good look at current society, albeit in a small number compared to population. I'm not sure if this was a global event, but to be honest, it rather unnerved me. If 100,000 people can beat a child's game together, what could they do if they directed that energy else wehere? (Enter your favored good cause here for example.) On a social scale, it's very interesting to think about. For a simpler thought, it's fun to watch a little figure from my childhood throw his most useful tools away, release his more powerful creatures and run constantly into walls. Honestly, I'd like to see what could be done with a Final Fantasy, but the in depth storylines would slow the progress and most likely leave us with an mess that is not very entertaining at all. Although, it would be interesting to see one of the challenges issued for the first final fantasy would look like being played this way. As someone interested in direct democracy, it's an interesting experiment indeed!
As for it being a waste of time: many things we do are a waste of time. Could those 100,000 people have taken part in a protest, or organized instead of playing? Sure, but the same can be said for you and me right now as we chat on here. I'll stop there and ignore the "child's game" remark and references to its simplicity and its age (Pokémon is one of the greatest games ever made, just saying). -------------------- |

Blitz, I agree entirely. It is one of the greatest games ever made, hence why I have memorabilia from it all over my home. Sadly, however, a great many people disagree with us on this note. Said child's game made pushed me further into the world of gaming in general.
A well famed book once said "One raindrop raises the sea" (Dinotopia) and with this in mind I also agree that we could be doing something to 'raise the sea.' This is why I enjoy watching the populace and society in general, we are contradictions and therefore amusing and interesting at the same time. Beyond the existential and confusing point of view I have, I say it's time to play Pokemon...without 100,00 other people looking over our shoulders. x3 This post has been edited by St Khael on 3rd March 2014 07:25 -------------------- I'm your Mama Terra, come hang out with me around the internet! Quote (BlitzSage @ 2nd March 2014 22:45) As someone interested in direct democracy, it's an interesting experiment indeed! The problem is that TPP has nothing to do with Democracy. Sure, people get to cast a vote, but by the time the delay kicks in, their vote is being applied to a totally different question. It's actually a pretty good example of what can go wrong with game design. You may call something democracy, you may design it to be democratic, but when you release the game and see Start9 all over the place, you realize that the system you made doesn't work in practice. Then you patch it to fix those issues. So maybe it does have something to do with Democracy, but not in the way everyone voting anarchy thinks. The current system of incentives in American politics is completely corrupted. You make more money and get reelected by selling out the people, not representing them. I had heard about one on another site and have been a few times to check it out and pretty much next to nothing is happening. Even if they had enough people playing, I think they are going to have a lot of trouble with the ATB system.
I guess we'll see. |

TPP made me want to pick up a recent pokeymans: Gonna borrow my friend's HeartGold when I next see her. It was actually the first game I played on my own period. So, obviously, nostalgia's there. But I've gone back to gen. I and II several times, and I've got to say that I continue to be impressed with what they created. The story itself is much like Legend of Zelda's, in that the actual plot details are not the interesting part. What's interesting is how perfect the symbolism links up with reality. For many people like myself, it was their first game. So, who's the protagonist? A boy that is about the same age I was when I first played. The protagonist is supposed to be learning how to train, while I was learning how to play games (that weren't platformers) for the first time. That made things like Silph Co. and Victory Road so satisfying. -------------------- |
