Do you think FFX was badly balanced in terms of how useful each character was?
By the time you reached max skills in everything for each character, some characters were no longer useful.Kimahri was mostly never useful, and there is little reason to bring out auron. You can spam blitz ace with tidus, and wakka's slots for multiple ball hits to get a huge amount of damage, more than what auron could do with 1 hit.Lulu seemed only useful if you had to fight enemies who were weak to magic, and immune to physical damage.Only time i know of that to happen, is in arena, so you don't really need her.Yuna can be useful with pain and with zangetsu attack to 1 shot bosses if you want to be cheap, but its not really needed. Overall:You could bring these characters with the optimal gear and win the game: Tidus Wakka Yuna Rikku for her super buffs. Seems like gear is far more important than the characters. Early in the game, i think there more reason to use all characters, but later on it seems with armor piercing skill, you do 99.999 no matter what, so what is the point? I think the optimal team is Tidus, Wakka and Rikku. Aside from the buffs, Rikku's limit break has a few 9 hit attacks which makes her essential. Choice of characters and super maxing everything out matters when fighting the Dark Aeons and Penance. I don't think it's totally broken. The game sets up the fight so that everyone specialises in something that will beat a certain type of enemy. However by the end everyone should be overlapping and the characters become a lot more standardised. I'm guessing a few of us played through the game first time without grinding much and managed to beat it. I think an RPG where you don't need to grind to get past every boss is quite well balanced. The late-game should be about optional superbosses and I think FFX has some really good ones! So I think it's balanced because you don't need to grind to very high levels to beat the game and see the end of the story, however there are some challenges that require a lot of grinding and maxed out characters. -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. It is just that by the time you reach end game, you'll be doing 99.9999 damage anyways, and magic doesn't have that great of a multi hit like blitz ace does.lets take for an example lulu:
Lulu's biggest advantage late in the game, is with the super slime monster in the arena.Outside of arena she isn't really that great. You can even avoid using her if you want and still deal good damage to the slime monster, making her sort of less useful late in the game.Early in the game, each character has a role, and each monster gives a reason to bring certain characters, like:You know you are playing wrong if you try and attack a slime monster with melee attacks, because they won't deal much damage, but by the time you reach end game, you can have every ability and spell, and that makes the others obsolete for the most part. Its not like in ff9 where each character retains its use because they have unique abilities from others. In FFX, those abilities become nulified in use because you have them.I hope i'm making sense. You can't pass on limit breaks(Thank god) but the limit breaks in FFX are the only things that separate each character, and early in the game its very well balanced, because those limit breaks are useful.Lets mention kimahri:Not once have i needed kimahri's abilities, and most of the time he is mostly useless. He has good attack power, but when you are dealing 99.9999, why not go for multi hitters? Even auron's limit breaks aren't as useful endgame, but he is still more useful than lulu late in the game, and far better than kimahri, who most of the time is useless.I dunno, just seems like the earlier to mid game is more balanced, because each character still retains its usefulness, but when you start overlapping areas and getting all those abilities, you start becoming overpowered. This, this and this. You may shout me down as an advocate of games being dumbed down, but i dislike being made to grind just in order to clear a game's story.. The fact that there is so much end game stuff shows Square's desire to please their hardcore RPG following and I think they did it well. I did about half of the endgame stuff and never did I score a 99,999 hit, or anywhere near... so I have to disagree there. But then i didn't spend much time grinding. I don't think saying your characters are overpowered after you've leveled them up almost to maximum is a solid criticism.... if I was to spend so much time levelling my characters to ridiculous heights, I'd be annoyed if they weren't doing ridiculous damage -------------------- www.youtube.com/blinje The victor sacrificed the vanquished to the heavens |

I agree that you should hit hard if you trained hard, but i also believe you should actually need to trade characters. In FFX early on, you had plenty of reason to take out auron for hard shelled enemies, or tidus for fast enemies, or lulu for casters.
