I like you...you make me laugh.

FF8 did kind of break down after a certain point. My big peeve in it is the scene in Galbadia Garden where it's revealed that Seifer has supposedly been executed. Squall wigs out...why? Has he never pondered death on the battlefield before? And he's been in military school how long?

You'd think that'd be lesson 1.

But still, the music carries the game for me.

I will drop kick anyone who says anything bad about any of the music in any Final Fantasy game, period. Even if I've ever said anything bad about it, I'll go back in time and drop kick myself.

I didn't care for fisherman's horizon, or the world map theme. And i find myself disliking terra's theme. That mean you are going to come here and drop kick me?

Want to hear another strange thing? i actually really like jecht as a character.I felt sad when he died and almost shed a tear for his death. The reason being:I found that jecht was your average father type guy who was a bit rough to his son to try and toughen him up.I found that he was a bit of a troublemaker at start, but as he began to see the immensity and sacrifice he was about to make, he seemed to change to me while battling sin. That is also why i like braska as well.

I didn't feel sad whatsoever though when tidus died.I was like:Whatever.

I never was able to finish XII OR XIII they were too linear for me I was hoping for the open world  experience of the previous games...

Too linear? If you like open world games keep playing further into XII, it opens up a lot more. I think, if anything, people thought it was too non-linear.

In 12 I didn't even get past the first summon boss before I got fed up and quit the game. 13 was just a travesty and only made it to shortly after the shiva battle... I may turn back to 12 and try to beat it but, dark souls, it eats away at my time when I'm not working or doing college work...

On a side note guys arguing/posturing over the Internet is like running in the special Olympics, win or lose you're still retarded...

I was almost a bit scared to look at the results once I cast my vote. With 2025 hindsight, the easiest FF to dislike would have to be XIII. It's a pretty safe bet when saying something negative. From what I've seen pursuing old topics & the fact that there's no FF VIII tab at the top of the site it got me worrying that my most beloved game would somehow be the most hated by old-school CoN...and my fears were realized!!

My vote went to XII. This thread is about our least-favorite, not our most favorite so I'll explain my choice rather than defend VIII, as much as I may want to. XII's cast, voice-acting, gameplay & world never really gripped me. It was sort of a disappointment at every turn for me, and I've never finished it despite starting fresh 7 times (at minimum). XIII may suck in a lot of ways, but when my PS3 died (ironically due to a lightning strike right outside my window) during the final boss fight I replayed the game from scratch immediately just to see it through. The same can't be said for XII in my case. I've abandoned every playthrough over the past ~20 years by choice.

I don't enjoy the quasi-MMO combat, nor the gambit system. The voice lines sound like the cast were wearing buckets on their heads. Why? They don't sound like that in FFX. It's not clear who the villain is until near the end. I can see why people love it, this is a very subjective dislike and I'm willing to admit that. Nothing about the game speaks to me or calls me back to it. I wish I liked it more.

I don't love the quasi-MMO combat either (and haven't bothered to play any other real-time FF games), but having the gambit system lets you go more "hands-off", which I find quite nice; frankly, I would love for the gambit system to reappear in more games--especially my holy grail of a new FFT. (Add in Triangle Strategy's Simulation Mode--even if I'm not sure how that'd meld with the aforementioned gambit system--and distinct game phases, and I'll go full Philip J. Fry.) I should say that I've only played the Zodiac Age version, and I don't know if that goes into your calculus or not.

I can't say I feel the need to replay FFXII, for what that's worth, but I would rather play it again than play FFVIII again. And that's not a knock at you, to be clear; I'm just expressing the same surprise I have whenever I discover that my favorite pokemon aren't even on some random person's Top 25 coolest -mons list (and vice versa). To each their own, as they say.

(Also, I think there's a fair number of FFT fans around here rather than "old school" fans, even if the latter isn't wrong--vis a vis any preference for FFXII over FFVIII. As an Ivalice lover, FFVIII can't hold a candle to any Ivalice game. I enjoyed FFVIII when I played it, but for people who play games like I do, FFVIII's mechanics encourage you to drive the fun right out of it.)

I'll start by saying I'm a huge FFT fan as well! It was my first FF, but only by a few days. I watched the neighbor kid play FFT & FF7 for an afternoon, before he lent me FF8 which was the first I played. Thus, it was sort of cemented for me: that's how a Final Fantasy game should play & feel. In some ways, Tactics and FF7 did the same shortly after. I'm an Ivalice fan and Tactics fan......just not XII. I think we agree on a lot.

Most of my attempts were on the PS2 North American release, but 2 times were Zodiac Age.

I don't take any of this as a knock against me. I've spent my entire life being a diehard for one of the leading black sheep of the series aside from FFII. I've replayed VIII a lot, most recently last October. It'll make sense once I explain that I was 7 or 8 when I first played it & I had nothing but free time. I didn't know any better so the Junction System and Drawing magic never struck me as clunky. By the time I was even an adolescent, FFVIII was a "solved" quantity in my life, never a nuisance to play. Drawing/Junctioning are cathartic to me, but I can see how they suck to other players. I would hate it if I encountered those systems for the first time now in 2025.

I can even understand why people don't like Squall, but again....I was like 7 years old. He was a "big kid" to me and I thought he was mega cool. He will always be a role model for me even if it's literally a part of his character to be an asshat.

My favorite Pokemon has always been Gastly. I'm pretty sure I'd have the same problem with Top 25 lists, haha.

Sorry to have derailed this thread towards talking about favorites. VIII is such a formative gaming experience for me that I can't see it in a negative light. XII had me pulling my hair out once when I was 12, an 'Elemental' in the Grasslands murdered my party during a storm and I didn't even see it coming. I think they looked docile and once attacked...they went nuts. I hadn't saved in a long time and I learned my lesson. I moped about that all afternoon, pinch.gif

I'll finish XII someday. I don't hate it, it's just my least favorite.

If you were to poll the members of this forum, I think that 8 or 13 might get it.  13 more likely.  I don't know much about 13 but I just know that a lot of people feel that the FF series has gone off the path it should be taking and that 13 gets panned a lot in that regard.

8 I know is a punching-bag around here, for being one of the poster-children of FF games that focused too much on narrative and forgot that it was still a game.

A third choice would be 2 thanks to its strange game mechanics.

I null-voted and the results are almost exactly as I expected.

Well, aside from the fact that FF12 tied with FF2 in third place.

Ironically, these days I've grown to be rather curious about FF13. I actually bought it a little while (maybe a few years by this point?) back, when it was on sale in the Humble Store.

I actually enjoyed the Junction System as a narrative concept: your bond with GFs grants you access to heights of power. However, I don't enjoy the tedium of drawing various spells, and because it's the spells that you're bonding with, you're just disincentivized from casting magic [and because the game isn't hard enough for their to be a should-you or shouldn't-you cast magic, the best bet is (usually, though not exclusively) to not bother with magic]. And magic is fun, or should be.

I think VIII could have been a lot more fun if your GFs allowed you to customize your stat growth without requiring you to micromanage your magic stock.
