I noticed someone said this in the Youtube comments, but I totally agree: the first thing that came to mind was Megaman X. Very nice.

Yes. The music is fantastic; and nostalgic, too. I have nostalgia.

Why has a metal band not covered this yet?

Only because I'm not good enough to start one yet

This is as close as it gets at the moment. Or so I have found. Not bad at all, but obviously room for more.

The day I'm at a random concert, and some band breaks out with the MQ boss theme will be one of the happiest moments of my life. I recently experienced something like this at some random hippy festival in the early spring, where I was freezing my ass off, and the band on stage started playing a kick-ass rock/synth/drums-and-bass/jam version of the Donkey Kong theme, thus reviving all my spirits at once. It was superb.

Anyway, since this goes with the topic's name:

Mystic Quest; what it is, and why it is worth playing.

I stumbled across that after clicking OP's link. I watched it all the way through, and I basically agree with everything he says. I actually only recently completed a playthrough of MQ, which was basically motivated by a recollection of all the features pointed out by the guy in the video; most notably, because the game is short and requires little commitment. One thing I also noticed, which he doesn't point out, is if you fight basically every random encounter you find, and do every battle square, you're usually leveled perfectly to the companion you get next. Granted, one can just rely on your OP party member to do all the heavy lifting thumbup.gif!

Mystic Quest, despite not being a TRUE Final Fantasy game in my mind, definitely has a place in my heart. If not just for the music. Battle was a little rudimentary but some of the boss fights -- like in the ice palace -- could get really tough!

The whole album for what Mog Master posted above. Metal Daniel is great!

Having played FFIV and FFVI before MQ, I thought the battle squares were a bit lame. But I got halfway through the game I think. It just got tedious, I remember.

That Happy Video Game Nerd commentary on FFMQ has an interesting piece of insight there -- that comparing the strong sales of FF2us and the lackluster sales of FFMQ actually paved the way for more (and more faithful) JRPGs to come to the US market.

Things like Lufia, Paladin's Quest, Illusion of Gaia, on the one hand.

But thinking about the short space of years between Final Fantasy IV and Secret of Mana, they made some considerable leaps forward in a very short space of time. It wouldn't be long after that Chrono Trigger came out.

Their R&D must've been on the verge of nervous collapse, they were churning out all this great stuff.
