Secret of Mana is a good Square-Enix game; I think it is more like Chrono Trigger than Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy IV is one of my favorites, and probably the one most like VI. I have heard good things about Final Fantasy VII, but I do not know if it is anything like VI. FF5 is another good game, but not as much like FF6.

Hey dktne, what do you like in old school rpg's? are you into turn based, heavy grinding?

Here's a couple of old games you could check out I'll try to keep it around Genesis/ SNES era to remain similar to ff6 in play-ability and 16 bit graphics.

Dragon Quest VI (SNES) (DS RELEASE) is similar and awesome (Amazing story line) High replay value.

Shining Force (Genesis) Is quite different. It's a turn based RPG but it's really quite fun.

non-16 bit noteworthy rpg's include Wild Arms and Jade Cocoon for PSX.

I'll definitely checking out secret of mana soon RavenLalond thanks for the suggestion, even though it wasn't directed at me happy.gif

TL;DR these are my favorite 16-bit RPGs not named Final Fantasy VI or Chrono Trigger.

Seiken Densetsu 3 - sequel to Secret of Mana, with a less-convoluted combo system, six playable characters instead of three, and a class system that adds replayability. Story is okay, but the real fun is the combat. GORGEOUS visuals and audio, too, being very late in the S.Famicom's lifespan. Never released in U.S., but there's a fully translated S.Famicom ROM.

Tales of Phantasia - the first game in the Tales Of series, ToP is one of the best SNES RPGs, period. Tricky action-based battle system, appealing cast of characters, and a lengthy story with one of my all-time favorite RPG villains. There's a (not very good) GBA version available in the U.S. and Europe, but if you can emulate I'd recommend a translated S.Famicom or PlayStation version. Both have multiple translations around.

Dragon Quest V - DQV is my favorite of the old-school Dragon Quest games, mostly because it has an incredibly story payoff. DQV is slow-moving, especially at the beginning, but its great story, monster recruiting sidequests, and wealth of content is fantastic. You can easily find a translated S.Famicom ROM if you look around, but there's also a DS version available. The DS version is probably better, as it has additional content and a few tweaks to make the game easier.

Super Mario RPG - of all the games I'm talking about, SMRPG is the LEAST like FF VI, but it's a blast. It starts out as Mario rescuing the princess, but ends up with Mario teaming up with Bowser, the princess, and two new characters to save the world from an evil smithy and his army of living weapons. Story is okay, but the dialog is hilarious and the combat is a delightful mix of turn-based and timing-based. Excellent game if you like Mario and RPGs. Available on the SNES or on the Wii's Virtual Console.

Hero's Realm: A really stellar RPG Maker game that captures the old love of the Final Fantasy games excellently and I absolutely recommend it.

Paradise Blue: Another excellent game, heavily inspired by Final Fantasy, but with a lot of its own style in it. Check it out as well.

I'd say you might get a kick out of the Front Mission series, myself.
