Question about guy in airship that "unequips items

For some reason he never unequips espers or relics, only weapons and armor. Is that supposed to happen?

Normal behavior is for him to remove Espers and Relics, but please note he will never remove Relics from Umaro; they must be manually removed. Are you playing vanilla, or a patched version?

Okay I must be going crazy because I switched a few members around and then looked at esper and relic lists and both of them were refreshed. The first time I looked I was missing a few relics and four espers were greyed out. No idea what fixed it...
