Recently a friend of mine sent me a link via Facebook about a Final Fantasy VI fanfilm in the works. I thought it was going to be a small group taking on a task that was too large for them but they actually turned out to be a small group intent on conquering one of the greatest games of all time.
https://www.facebook.com/terramovie http://www.finalfantasymovie.net/ Both of the links above will take you to all of the information available at this time. It looks to be very well put together so far even through costumes and casting. The creator has stated that there will be functional magitek armor visible in the film as well as various monsters. Being a small company they most likely will not have amazing graphics, but I never knew VI to need graphics to begin with. What peaks my interest about this is that they are going through the proper channels to request allowance and support from Square Enix before they start a kickstarter campaign. I applaud them for this seeing as so many fan films and fan created mods / games bring down the fist of the game company on them. They have started, however, that should Square Enix refuse to allow this, they will forgo the kickstarter and go by private funding. I'm certainly looking forward to seeing this come about. -------------------- I'm your Mama Terra, come hang out with me around the internet! Retro gaming cosplayer with a focus on Terra Branford. |

Well, best of luck to them with this! This is certainly ambitious, but then again I just recently discovered someone's intention to re-create an improved version of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night in Game Maker...and most shockingly of all he really seemed to have a plan and was going through it.
Quote I never knew VI to need graphics to begin with. Looking at the pictures on the fb page, it seems this will be live-action, and that'll have different graphical demands than a 16-bit game for the audience to engage willing suspension of disbelief. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. Indeed, every single spell cast, every single monster encountered would require top-grade visual effects, and unless they intend on shooting the majority of the scenes on location (extremely unlikely for a small team project) much of the settings are going to need to be green screened, as they are in the poster shoots.
All the luck in the world to them, as a film student I would love to be involved in something like this, and understand the obstacles. -------------------- I fear my heart and fear my soul Life goes on, it surely will, Without me and I wonder: Will I ever see light again? Life goes on... |

I don't think they would need top grade viz effects, as long as it's clear what's happening and the story is engaging.

Actually incorporating or even tangentially acknowledging the base mechanics such as spells and monster encounters would be an absolutely horrendous idea. A game's mechanics have no business being translated into a medium where they serve no purpose. -------------------- |

You don't think the existence of magic and its implication as a mechanic of war serve a purpose to the story and setting of Final Fantast VI? Or the existence of otherworldly creatures?

Then I fail to understand your indignation on the matter.

Wasn't indignation, though I tend not to appreciate words being put in my mouth. To wit: I did not say magic or monsters, which is lore and can be used in a narrative function. I said spells and monster encounters which are game mechanics used to facilitate play. While they're important from a interactive standpoint, from a narrative one they're completely irrelevant and acknowledging them now means having to explain them which will bog down the narrative in needless expository details that ultimately won't serve the story.

Spellcasting means doing magic and encountering monsters means coming upon monsters. These are not terms exclusive to game mechanics. Sherick's just saying magic and monsters require visual effects. There is no implication that they need to line up and take turns selecting attacks against monsters that appeared out of thin air.

Quote (Narratorway @ 25th June 2013 02:45) Honestly, I wouldn't have even thought to bring it up if I didn't see it time and time again whenever the issue of film adaptations come up. I feel odd coming to Nway's defense, but he clearly indicated he was talking about game mechanics so there's no point in saying "monster encounters can also mean just monsters being in the film," or suchlike.
A good example of his point is the Silent hill movies - in which they focused on recreating the gameplay mechanics: running around schools and hospitals looking for arbitary items to guide their path, and took huge liberties in their interpretation of the games' lore and story. It should have been the other way around. The result was that the first film was incredibly meh, and the second was incredibly bad. -------------------- www.youtube.com/blinje The victor sacrificed the vanquished to the heavens |

Yeah but that obviously was not what was being talked about at all. Talk about putting words in my mouth

Not sure what you're getting at there.. who put words in your mouth, me? Nway?
Was it the recent post? or Nway's first post. -------------------- www.youtube.com/blinje The victor sacrificed the vanquished to the heavens |
