After what in my opinion was a thoroughly underwhelming demo today by the Xbox One crowd, I got to thinking back to if I had ever bought a gaming console either on launch day, or maybe even up to six months from when it launched. So, thinking back on what I own....
NES - Bought for me (or maybe my dad bought it for himself!) when I was too young to remember. SNES - Also bought for me, I want to say in 1992. Certainly not around launch time. N64 - Surprise christmas present in 1996. This was far and away the system I anticipated the most, followed very closely via Nintendo Power, and ultimately received the closest to its launch date. Game Boy & Game Boy Color - Definitely got both of these way past release date, never had more than two or three games on them....except Pokemon, all I'd ever need on it! Xbox - Purchased well after its release...I remember Halo 2 was brand new when I got it. Never acquired all that many games for it either, mostly played Halo 1 and 2 in the dorms back in college days. Nintendo Wii - 2008, once again well after launch. The motion controls really turned me off though, and mostly steered clear of non multiplayer games. The Virtual Console was a plus, though. My last console purchase was the PlayStation 3 in 2010. I bought it primarily for the blu-ray player, and picked up a few well-known titles and solid games throughout, but never amassed anywhere near a considerable gaming library on it. So my question for you guys, are you the type who like to buy consoles on launch day? What will you be doing for the latest generation of consoles (or have you bought a Nintendo Wii U already)? And considering we're in this new era of more easily-accessible video games (Steam) and other outlets to pursue, are you even still tied to consoles these days? For me, I can understand the appeal of having cutting edge, but for me it's just too much considering it'll be at its highest price and have the least amount of games/features/content. Not to mention the previous generation had some initial launch woes (manufacturers defects), etc. |

I've never bought one on day one. Closest I ever got was getting a SNES first week, which I would have gotten day one but I was 11 and couldn't get a ride into the city to pick it up.
![]() Most of my consoles and handhelds over time have been gifts, and the ones that haven't been have been ones I got much later like my PS2 and my 360. I shan't be buying anything day one in the near future, either. I have a Bluray player and I have four devices in my house already that aren't computers and have access to Netflix. Those are the two main things I need, not things to play games. So, I'm good for now! -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

The only time I ever got a console or handheld on the first week of launch was the DS Lite. I already wanted a DS, I had some extra money at the time (summer 2006, I think?), and those white DS Lites were purdy. I usually wait at least two or three years.
...until now. I kind of want a PS4 really, really a lot. -------------------- |

I think I bought the PS3 on UK launch. I won't buy the PS4 on UK launch.
Probably because from the look of it, it'll be sold out. Maybe I'll buy an XBox One. PS3 was the closest I got to buying on launch day, but I didn't buy it until the next month. If I was a younger man, I probably would buy a PS4 on launch day, because I've been impressed. My brother and I had talked about it and were leaning towards not buying one of the next generation consoles, but chatting last night we think we might pick one up; he'll still get a lot of play time over the next couple summers, and during the brief swaths in which I am home, I'll be wanting to hit up whatever the most recent FF is ![]() -------------------- Currently Playing : Final Fantasy V Most Recently Beat : Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Favorite Game : Final Fantasy X The newest CoNcast is up! I've never bought consoles on launch day and I was considering pre-ordering a PS4 but then I thought of the whole, system launch "bugs" and "issues" and unforseen problems and decided that I should probably wait until I see what happens with the first launch before I decide to get one.
