I'm not dead yet! /holygrail
Anyway, after exhausting my FF collection (and having FFV Advance go through the washing machine and having the chips broken off), I've been playing a lot of Dragon Quest. I haven't seen much DQ love on this site, even though it's a Final Fantasy fansite. Anyone here have a place in their heart for the sister series to FF? |

In the past 7 or 8 years, I've played more Dragon Quest than Final Fantasy. I'm still surprised by that. I've beaten 8 of the 10 main-series Dragon Quest games plus a few spinoffs and I own about 15 to 20 of these: Sofubi Monsters.
So yeah, Dragon Quest is pretty great. I very much hope that North America gets the 3DS DQ VII remake and some version of DQ X. -------------------- |

Overall, I happen to like DQ more than FF. The only FF that I like more than most DQ games is FFVI, and even then it's a toughie.
I wish I had some of those monsters--but what I really want is the 70+ dollar Dragon Quest IV Hero action figure with the Zenithian equipment. All of my DQ games have the case and manual, and I'm proud of that, too, as well as owning a near mint-condition copy of Dragon Warrior VII on the PSX. I've got: DQIV (DS) DQV (DS) DQVI (DS) DQVII (PSX) DQVIII (PS2) DQIX (DS) DQM:J (DS) DQH:Rocket Slime (DS) DQ Wars (DSiWare) that's it I think. Also, if we don't get the 3DS Dragon Quest games over here, I'll be pissed. |

I still think I like Final Fantasy more than Dragon Quest, but only because I feel that FF VI and Tactics are better than any Dragon Quest game, and that FF VII through FF X are better than the DQ games of the same era (...pretty much only DQ VII). My favorite DQ game is V, with VIII as a close second. Which one I like better changes practically every week, but those are definitely my two favorites. My DQ game collection:
DW I+II (GBC) DW III (GBC) DQ IV (NDS) DQ V (NDS) DQ V (PS2 import) DQ VI (NDS) DW VII (PS1) DQ VIII (PS2) DQ IX (NDS) DQ Monsters (GBC) DQ Rocket Slime (NDS) All of those have cases and manuals except for DQ III and DQ Monsters, and I've finished all of them except for DQ VII. I used to own Dragon Warrior and Dragon Warrior IV for the NES, but I sold my entire NES collection a long time ago. The sofubi series has the main characters from I through VI in it (the one you're talking about it is an older figurine with more accessories), but I like the monsters better. They aren't *that* expensive; only problem is that the shipping costs more than the items themselves.... This post has been edited by laszlow on 6th April 2013 19:24 -------------------- |

I've been meaning to play some more DQ (and laszlow's been bugging me about it). I've only played DQ1, GBC version. It was pretty fun. But I'm aware that DQ is like the other huge-name veteran JRPG franchise out there.

Dragon Quest is great, but I haven't played that many of them. I've beaten IV and V though. IV was great and V is one of my favourite games of all time. I've played a bit on IX and the PS2 game some time ago but I never finished them. What other games in the series are most similar to IV and V?

I absolutely LOVE the Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest series.
My all time favorite is the original Dragon Warrior IV for the NES. I did also buy DQIV, DQV, DQVI, and DQIX for the DS. But the jewel of my collection is the very rare cartridge of Dragon Warrior IV for the NES. -------------------- kame, tortue, tortuga, schildkröte, tartaruga, turtle "Arthur Dent?" "Yes." I really really like dragon quest 4, because it has separate stories for each character, and we get to see the adventures of each character.I had fun finding out about who taloon was, and what he wanted in life.I get to have my own shop, which is really cool
Dragon quest 8 is my second favorite. This post has been edited by Magitek_slayer on 8th April 2013 12:45 -------------------- We are stardust. Our bodies are made from the guts of exploding stars. Neil Degrasse Tyson. |

Dragon Quest is great, but unfortunately if you've played one you've essentially played them all. DQVIII is still one of my favorite games of all time, and IX was pretty damn fun too.

VIII's soundtrack is something out of this world, for sure. Outside of that, it's a bit spotty.

I've been meaning to try out a DQ game at some point, not sure where to start though. I'm leaning towards the SNES remake of DQ1, would you guys recommend this?

DQ1 is neat from an idea / concept perspective, but it's quite dated and might be a little frustrating. If you can find a full translation, I would recommend the S.Famicom version of DQ III, the DS version of DQ V*, or DQ VIII for the PS2.
*The DS version of DQ V is the best one (IMO) because they increase the party size from three to four, they add Pachisi to make high-level items available earlier, and there are more monsters to recruit. The PS2 remake doesn't add much new content, but looks gorgeous (best looking / sounding version of DQV). If you don't want to put money down, the S.Famicom version of DQ V is still very good, and there are translated versions of that all over the net. -------------------- |

DQ is way too conservative for it's own good (at least in terms of attracting more sales outside of Japan). That being said, the series is quality stuff, assuming you can stand a bit of grind. I second laszlow's recommendation of DQ V for NDS. The humor is beyond awesome (if you like puns), and the story was pretty revolutionary for RPGs in the early 90s.
IV is worth playing on the NDS. Don't bother with the first two at this point. III is awesome if you can find a copy, and VIII is amazing. DQ VII is overlong. DQ doesn't do job systems nearly as well as FF, though. I'm not sure exactly why... Also, even though I've seen the abysmal sales figures for DW IV on the NES, I think that's three people on this thread that own or have owned a copy thereof at this point, myself included. Kinda interesting, that. -------------------- TA-RU~! |

I need to start Nine up again. I got about 8-9 hours into it and really liked it for the most part but I ended up stopping for some reason.
Dragon Quest 3 is one of my favorite games of all time and it is really close for me between that one and Final Fantasy 1 as to what my favorite NES game is. I slightly prefer the character creation and class mixing in DQ3 I think but I vastly prefer FF1's combat. Ahh, they're both good games that I've played dozens of times and will continue to rotate between. Some of the other Dragon Quest games I have been less enthusiastic about. I've got a decent way into V and VII and liked both of those games but neither as much as III and IX. VIII is the only one I haven't actually played. I should probably get around to correcting that some day. |

Anyway, for those of your interested in playing the SNES/SFamicom version of DQIII, there's a translation available at romhacking, http://www.romhacking.net/translations/1323/ I played it and thought it was a great version. -------------------- kame, tortue, tortuga, schildkröte, tartaruga, turtle "Arthur Dent?"
