So I've gone back and played some of the older than FF VI games (I had only ever played IV) and I see the theme of them always being about the Crystals with even the crystal keeps looking very much the same between the different games and I see so much focus on them in fan games and the like but I think of the later games in the series and I don't see any real mention of "the crystals" anymore. I was specifically thinking of VI when I had this thought which is why this is posted here but I guess it's morphing in to talk about the rest of the series. Were the crystals still there in the later FF games or were they completely absent? The only crystals in VI that I think of are magicite. Thoughts?

II,VI,VII,VIII and X not sure about any after X had no four elemental crystals from my memory. But the huge materia in VII seemed like a homage to the four crystals.

So my thoughts are that it kind of seems like since II it's been shown the crystals don't define FF as the only story related point though II did introduce the Chocobo and Cids.

I think Seraphim's right. Each of the later games has some reference to the crystals as a major plot element but doesn't call them 'the crystals' or make them a really obvious plot point.

I was going to go into detail on all of them but then I found this, which has all the answers: FF WIki.

For FFVIII it's really interesting how the Lunatic Pandora is that game's crystals. It makes sense: a big destructive force that isn't used by the owners is taken over by an evil force and destroys everything! And it's made out of crystals inside.

Cool. Thanks for the wiki site. Yeah I thought it seemed to be missing which was weird to me because so many I guess old schoolers particularly when making fan games in rpg maker use the crystal element when it wasn't my favorite or as big of a plot element anymore.

I always figured The Warring Triad was just another version of the crystals. They're supposed to be responsible for magic in its entirety and the crystals tend to be heavily involved in magical phenomena.
