Hard drive failure =[
the other day I got a blue screen and that was that. I dont think the motor even begins to spin up, it's utterly dead. Can't afford to send it off for recovery either, but I'm not very technologically proficient so not really aware of my options. If anyone has any ideas/experience on the matter please enlighten me. -------------------- www.youtube.com/blinje The victor sacrificed the vanquished to the heavens |

I, for one, will certainly miss your funny Sartre quote.

Best of luck with that. I remember one summer, when my family was living in a duplex between houses and didn't want to "mess around with" (read: set up / touch) the computer, I biked to the library every day to check CoN / the internets.

I have seen you posting a bit more recently, I assume that's from a different machine. If it's really dead and you get no spinup, yeah, that's a tough one to recover from without going to a professional, who might just give you the same answer again. As a layperson, I think the best you can do is to pull that drive and try to stick it into another PC or into an external enclosure and see if you can get a different machine to read it properly. It's possible that the issue could be power or connection related, if the thing just isn't spinning up at all, and that's something you could diagnose by trying it with a different set of connections.
I guess to boil it down to a selection of things that you could try:

Yeah I'm on a different machine, thanks for the advice man.
The not very friendly man at my local PC shop ascertained that the drive has no spin-up when trying to connect to a PC there. I've since realised there wasn't all that much on there that I'll miss, mostly game stuff like a 100+ hours New Vegas save.. that's a kick in the teeth, but meh. I Guess when the new HDD arrives i'll 'upgrade' to Windows 7. I've read some stuff about people fixing HDD's that dont spin up by replacing the PCB on the exterior, I guess it's worth a go when I've got some disposable income, but seems like too much effort for something i'll have no idea if it works. Edit: oh hang on.. I don't think I've understood all your suggestions exactly This post has been edited by Blinge Odonata on 18th April 2013 10:11 -------------------- www.youtube.com/blinje The victor sacrificed the vanquished to the heavens |

Well, if you took it to the not-friendly-guy (aren't they all in places like that?), he probably already did all of my bullet points except for the last one. I dunno about changing out the PCB, never really encountered that.
Also, you should totally upgrade to 7 if you can. 7 is awesome. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

So hopefully you game through there! -------------------- Hey, put the cellphone down for a while In the night there is something wild Can you hear it breathing? Welp, here I am on a new hard drive. Windows 7 does seem good indeed, although a tech scrub like me probably can't use it to its full potential.
Ah thanks for the advice Neal but as far as I'm aware F:NV doesn't support steam cloud D= -------------------- www.youtube.com/blinje The victor sacrificed the vanquished to the heavens |
