Now that I spend some time managing the CoN Twitter Account, I see a lot of people posting about Final Fantasy as if there is only one, or if the series started with X. I think that the reason for this is just because so many gamers, especially of the Twitter generation, either weren't alive for the earlier games, or weren't literate for them (or of course, both is also an option).

So, while a lot of us here are probably a lot older, it makes me curious: it may or may not have been the first in the series you've played, but which one was the newest when you were born? Or, which one was the first one you probably could have played and understood, even if you didn't play it until much later?

For me, because I'm old as the hills, it's certainly FF1. It came out when I was nine, and I played it right away.

Yeah, FF1 came out when I was two. The first one I remember playing, though, was FF4. My buddy had it when I was in...probably first grade, and he wanted to try to startle me with the shocking battle-transition ZHHH-ZHHHHHH! It didn't work. I actually didn't play FF1 until much later.

FFIV came out in the US a couple months before I was born. I would've been old enough to play FFVII when it came out, except that my parents didn't allow videogames until I was in middle school. I played my first FF, FFX, probably right about when FFX-2 came out.

I'm roughly the same age (give or take a few months) as several major videogame series, among the Mega Man, Castlevania, and Final Fantasy.

Well I was born in 1991, so I dont know what game i was born closest to, however my cousin had ff6 and when i started playing snes, i grew up with super mario world, moved to super mario RPG, then i foudn the glory of FF6.

So i guess in short, i would assume FF6 1994 wasn't the closest but the one i ended up playing first.

I was almost two years old when the original Final Fantasy landed, but I didn't play my first Final Fantasy game until several years later, when I was trying to figure out FF IV's tiny field sprites at my friend Jason's house. Basically same boat as Neal.

I was "released" about the time the Nintendo (famicom) and Sega SG 1000 consoles were first released in Japan.

http://www.onlineeducation.net/videogame_timeline

I remember when I was maybe 5 or so, we got our first Nintendo for Christmas, and my dad ruled at super mario bros. He held the controller like a little keyboard propped up on his thumbs. Our collection grew to maybe 35 games or so, including the game genie, and of course, Final Fantasy, but soon afterwards, the SNES came out and we eventually lost our NES and all our NES games after we lent them to a friend, who eventually ended up selling them at a garage sale.

Edit: Note that many of the above timeline dates correspond to Japan release dates.

Ha ha, I'm in the same boat as Rangers. The first Final Fantasy I played was FFI when it came out while I was in elementary school. Never did finish the game (to this day!) but it must have impressed me enough that I wanted to play Final Fantasy II (US) and fell in love with that game.

I got to see Final Fantasy when I was 6, which would have been in 1987, when it came out in Japan. This can only mean that the neighbors across the street had a Famicom, and I do in fact remember seeing Japanese Final Fantasy box art at their house.

The thing I remember most was the Ninja, and that the guy playing it referred to the Class Change process as "maturing."

FFII was the newest when I was born, and FFIII came out a couple of months after.

I didn't start playing video games until 2002 or so, and didn't play my first FF (VIII) until 2006.

--------------------
FF games completed: I (psp), II (psp), III (DS), IV (psp), V (GBA), VI (GBA), VII, VIII, IX, X, XI: Nations-Rhapsodies of Vana'diel, XII, XIII, XIV, XV.
Spin-offs: FFIV: Interlude & The After Years, Crisis Core: FFVII, X-2, XIII-2, Lightning Returns, Type-0 HD, Dissidia, Dissidia 012, and Tactics (original & WotL).
Enjoyed them all.

I was 9 when the first Final Fantasy was released here in the states but the first one I played was FF6 on Super Nintendo in about 1995 or 1996. Fell in love with RPGs after that. It's still a favorite but my focus has moved on to new games. I haven't done a play through in quite a while.

Final Fantasy II. It turns out FFIII was released four months after I was born... Oh! Just like ILoveMoombas! In fact, almost exactly, because the first FF game I ever saw or remember seeing was FFVIII.

I like to call it the Final Fantasy VII syndrome. Most people's first Final Fantasy is typically their favorite.

I see the same thing going on with fans of Morrowind. Though there were bigger and better Elder Scrolls before it (Daggerfall) typically the game that introduced them to a new world usually holds a nostalgic value.

My first Final Fantasy was Final Fantasy I since I was board in 85 and was the first I played. Now the first I owned was Final Fantasy VI (III back then)

I greatly enjoy Final Fantasy X and I feel it ranks up there and in way better to Final Fantasy IX for me at least.

This is certainly true for me - and FFVII was the game that introduced me to Final Fantasy. As a result it will always have a special connection for me.

The newest when I was born will have been FF1, going by western release dates (born in '88) . The first one I could have played, due to comprehension and regional release practicalities, was probably VII anyway, as I don't think (?) the previous versions were released in the UK until later years.

That said, even though VII was the first I acutally played, and I understood it fine - I didn't actually understand some of the deeper themes until years later...

Haha, my "comprehension" was terrible back then. Me and my friend maybe got to the Town were you fight the pirates in Final Fantasy I but after that all we could get to is Elfland and we couldn't figure out the rest.

To be honest that still hasn't changed till this day.

Keep in mind I used to go over and play that at my friends house at age seven. In second grade another of my friends introduced me to Final Fantasy VI (III)....I was blown away and rented it for over six months until my parents finally decided to buy it for me.

Issue was at that time I couldn't get past Mt Kolts; Vargas. My main issue was not being able to read well in third grade and figure out relics. Eventually other people who rented the game got far and I used their saves to play around and roleplay.

I sadly seen the end of the WoB and WoR before I even could get there myself.

Sadly....someone in the video game store broke the game and eventually my parents bought the game after that I figured everything out. Man the memories

In the EU FFVII was the first to be released in '97, but technically my closest release was FFIII in Japan (born '89). Until this thread I hadn't realised that in my 8 year lifetime til FFVII so many FF games had been made. Thing is, I've played through FFVII so many times that I can hardly relate to that first time anymore. Like a lot of things I suppose...

Being an awesome baby of '84, it would've been Final Fantasy that'd be nearest me. I probably could've played it first, too, but I didn't know of it, my parents didn't, and thus I stuck with Duck Tales, Super Mario Bros. 3, Duck Hunt, Mega Man, Kirby and such. I really wish I'd known of Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy or Legend of Zelda back then, but alas, no.

My first one I played while comprehending, as mentioned over in the History thread going on, was Final Fantasy III US. That being said, finally getting to play Final Fantasy with my friends on NES and Final Fantasy VII for myself was what sucked me into the franchise.

I was a whiny 2 and a half year old when Final Fantasy I was released (Japan)

Or 5, in North America.

The first Final Fantasy game I played was IV I believe... also Legends II.

The closest ff i'm closest to is ff1 on the nes, but i was born before that.
My first game i played was duck hunt in 1985 when i was a little kid, which also came with mario.

I've been playing games for more years than a lot of people's age, but i might retire soon from gaming. The thrill isn't the same as it used to be.
