You might have heard over time that Kansas City is the first metro area to test Google's fiberoptic internet, and maybe even that signups have begun. They recently set up a showroom for the technology in KC's hipster neighborhood, where I lived for a year or so, so today I decided to drive into town to check it out.

See the topic title. It's fast. Obviously they have a controlled environment there, and I wouldn't expect it to be the same in a real home, but things were snappy. CoN loaded in a blink, and playing games on the site I work on for my real job was super quick. They had an OnLive box set up, and I watched a game in 1080i (I think it was one of the Driver games) being played live with absolutely no jitter or lag.

The TV response looked good, too - I watched some of Planet Earth and a couple Olympic events on their service while I was there, and it was every bit as good as my current TV service over standard cable.

Having seen the investment they put into the showroom, and the infrastructure involved in rolling this out as much as they're planning to just for the five cities currently on the list, these guys are serious. I think we all should be begging Google and our municipalities to roll this out, because the endgame is that whether you're on Google or Comcast or Verizon, this can only raise the bar for how we get information and entertainment. If I had any chance at getting Google, I would be signing up for the preorder right now.

Hanyou just posted this in chat, thought I'd crosspost it here: http://gizmodo.com/5960377/google-fiber-ha...s?post=54269160

Yeah. You want Google to bring this to you, even if that headline might be a bit misleading.

That's pretty crazy. I feel like google is currently one of the most trustworthy companies at the moment for technology, so it isn't surprising they're providing an amazing service with quality to match.

Hopefully they expand rapidly if things go well. Countries in North America are grossly behind in terms of internet compared to other developed ones.

It looks like for residential service in KC, they're going to be charging about $70 a month. I think the plan is still to offer it to schools and libraries for free. $70 a month, even if it's only half the speed that they promise, is absolutely ridiculous; BoysBoysBoys has it right, we might only be about 30 years behind by the time it's everywhere in the US. smile.gif

Only a matter of time before they're brought to heel, If not already.
Control google and you control information.
