So I was wandering about the wild, open fields of the internet when I came upon this site: http://www.brickset.com/
It has all the different lego sets for each of the different themes, listed by year or by theme with pictures and original prices for everything, as well as links to copies on Amazon and ebay. As someone who was a massive legos fan, I have spent tons of time in the last few days looking over this whole site, checking out all my favorite sets and all the sets I always wanted. So, what are you favorite themes/series? What're your favorite sets? And which ones did you always want but never ended up with? Personally, I'm almost considering buying one or two just to fulfill my childhood. -------------------- Currently Playing : Final Fantasy V Most Recently Beat : Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Favorite Game : Final Fantasy X The newest CoNcast is up! Castle, from 1990-95 or so. I have some pretty awesome ones. I used to set up a big kingdom world spanning my play room!

I loved Lego, and still love Lego to this day.
My family didn't have a ton of money when I was in prime Lego age - we were comfortable, but mainly because we didn't go all out on things like Lego - so collecting specific themes or sets over time just wasn't in the cards. A lot of my bricks, therefore, were collected second-hand, or from a variety of themes. Of course, for birthdays and Christmases and such, I think it was easier for my family to pick out Transformers and Micro Machines anyway, and that was fine with me. I was always most enamored of the Space sets from '85-'90 or so. However, looking at Brickset, I can't find any sets that I specifically remember having, though I think http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6971-1 , http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=1558-1 , and http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6702-1 are all in my closet somewhere. After I got into college, I started picking up a set or two, just small stuff, when I felt like it. I've got a few small Star Wars sets scattered around, usually just the $10 mini-sets like http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=7121-1 . Nothing fancy, just something to do quickly and set on a shelf. Took a long break due to having even less money (and time) than I did as a kid, but I always went into the Lego stores in New York, New Jersey, and Boston whenever I was in the neighborhood during the times I lived there. Last fall, my wife surprised me by picking up a Clone Wars set ( http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=8086-1 ) from an airport Lego store - brilliant idea, that - when she was away visiting one of her company's other offices. I have yet to put it together, for a variety of reasons, but even though I've never watched Clone Wars I'm excited to have it. I think the most telling thing, though, is that I'm almost 31 and I have four Lego sets on my AmaCoN wishlist right now, all from the Architecture series: http://amzn.to/eBQQ4f http://amzn.to/e0TDqv http://amzn.to/g4qsoT http://amzn.to/dIVJ6n (Feel free to buy them for me, especially Fallingwater and the Guggenheim, because I'm a Wright junkie.) -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

Lego was always my favorite. I'm sure in the attic back at my mom's house she's saved every set that I used to have in some large bin, and all this thread and that site are doing is making me want to go home and build all of them over again.
Last year for my birthday, my roommates got me Darth Vader's TIE, which was an incredible gift: http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=10175-1 It takes forever to build and is awesome for an afternoon. I had a collection of different styles, with some Pirates/Islanders, some Castle, and some Space. Some of my favorites that I discovered on the site: http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6984-1 This was an awesome space flier that was one I constantly destroyed and rebuilt. http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6939-1 This one split open to launch the rover guy in the bottom left. http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6278-1 Is this racist? http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6082-1 Probably the last set I got on my main lego kick. It had a trap door that led into the dragon pit, which was pretty sweet. Now I want all of the Lego. -------------------- Hey, put the cellphone down for a while In the night there is something wild Can you hear it breathing? Neal also had this one, which he shared in chat and reminded me that I, in fact, had it too!
http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6955-1 I also remembered a story - I had an auto racing minifig that I got second hand, and one time when I was seven, maybe eight, I also had a nice helium balloon. I, of course, decided that it would be fun to tie the minifig to the balloon and then rescue him as he was taken away by the winds, with the aid of my BB gun. Of course, there weren't really air-propelled guns at this time, almost 25 years ago, that didn't require extensive pumping after each shot. So, when my first shot failed to bring down the balloon, I was forced to madly pump the gun in the hopes of having another go before it was out of sight and/or range. I failed miserably. That balloon probably didn't make it more than a mile away. That minifig is probably somewhere right now, plowed into some farmer's cornfield. In memoriam: random Lego minifig. I hope that racing helmet served you well on your final journey. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

Fort Legoredo was one that sticks out a lot from my childhood. My parents got it for my 8th birthday back in '97 for 20 bucks (it was missing all of 3 pieces which I had) and I have fond memories of it.

I was also very into space sets, but not quite the same era as Josh's. Two of my most-cherished legos were from the Exploriens series:
http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6856-1 http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6899-1 Boy did I get my money out of those. I was a bit older once the UFO series started up, and with various birthdays and Christmases I accumulated almost the entire line (except the biggest one, of course). My favorite was definitely this one: http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6915-1 My favorite sets were definitely the underwater ones, though. But only the super-cool futuristic underwater ones, that looked like they could probably also be in outer space Here's one from the Aquasharks that I lusted over: http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6190-1 Two of the favorites that I actually owned (a good guy and a bad guy, of course, but they often ended up on the same team exploring the wild unknown of my house): http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6180-1 http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6160-1 One of my most-wanted sets ever was from the Ice Planet 2002 series, but I they were out of stores by the time I saw it in one of those little lego catologues: http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6973-1 I thought the idea of an ice planet was so cool. Lego's good fun, man.
I spent a good deal of time making up long-winded scenarios out of squares and rectangles. I probably wasn't the most creative or prolific of Lego children, but I sure did have a great time. I seem to particularly remember a lot of Star Fox-inspired work. As far as themes go, I think I had more of a set graveyard than a display or collection. Every set seemed to eventually be stripped away and re-imagined into a (often ill-fitting) piece of whatever scenario was the soup du jour. I can say that there was a heavy population of spacemen, although their set origins are unknown to me. What I clearly remember is this one from the Ninja sets that I was fond of around the time that I was asking for Legos as presents: http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6088-1 Edit Quote I was also very into space sets, but not quite the same era as Josh's. The last special set I remember having of Legos myself was a Star Wars sets. I'm sure I had others before but Legos have the nasty tendency of getting lost, especially if you're moving. I liked the sandy desert base piece they used and several of the antennas...
I never rarely ever followed the patterns though because stupidly enough, I could never figure out how. The diagrams looked like nonsense to me. As such it was typically For the mostpart I used to make little starships of my own design using all sorts of cool pieces and bits from the plain ordinary sets as weaponry and really wanted to keep them forever but they broke apart irrepairably two moves later. It's a real shame too because some of them were comprised of special edition Purple blocks which just looked so cool. Legos really need to come in more colors, (that you can easily buy in bulk at that, although I could at least manage to use the same colors symmetrically, the coloring wasn't too consistent.) An interesting thing about it is that you can use the little flat pieces to change the orientation of where you're building by 90 degrees by sticking shoving them between the pegs. This is especially useful for making it possible to have little protruding bits as main guns or maybe flag poles going out horizontally and all that jazz. You could similarly even center cylindrical pieces by sticking them between the four pegs and even build upon it without making things off center by directly plugging the top into the large hole on the bottom. Axles could be used similarly but I'd only recommend using them if you wanted the option for a moving part. Legos are a blast. In its most basic form it's also very similar to pixel art creation, except in 3D... -------------------- |

It was like a bit of an Indiana Jones treasure-hunting adventure thing going on, and it was awesome. I had several of the Egypt ones, and a couple of the Amazon ones that followed. I think after that they went to a Dino Island or something, and maybe somewhere after that too, though by that time I wasn't much into it. A bit more recent series (and by that I mean the year 2000), but one that I thought was really cool, was Rock Raiders. I had a few of those, and I thought that was a really well thought out series. -------------------- Currently Playing : Final Fantasy V Most Recently Beat : Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Favorite Game : Final Fantasy X The newest CoNcast is up! My friend had a lot of the Underwater ones and I loved them! I loved how they had those articulated grabby claws on their subs, the way things would interlock into docking bays and such. It was so awesome! And Ice Planet was rad too! Also for all the same reasons. I also really liked the colour scheme of it. I always wanted some of the Pirate stuff. The ships were amazingly well designed and I really liked how they had full sails and everything. However, I only got my castle sets on birthdays or Christmas and that was it, and they were expensive enough so... yeah. But I found some of them! Majisto's Magical Workshop Wolfpack Tower Royal Drawbridge King's Mountain Fortress This was easily my favourite, I recall. I *think* I have this one... but can't remember... Fire-Breathing Fortress I also had a boat from castle stuff too, but I forget which. I found one, but it seemed so small... but, that was probably it and it seems bigger in my memory cause I was a wee one when I had it haha. Also. WANT. Most recently, I've collected a few Star Wars sets, from Clone Wars, and I did get an awesome TIE Fighter that I love. It's huge, awesome, and I want a Millennium Falcon haha. A Star Destroyer would be epic too. Someday I want to get my Castle set all done up again, and I'd like to go back and find some more. Wow, I used to love Lego! I was especially fond of the space sets, as well as the Lego City.
But I had a very individual approach to playing with Lego. I'd buy a set, build it as per the instructions, then take it apart and use the bricks to build my own things. Spaceships were a particular love of mine - I used to build my own and the bigger the better, but I never seemed to have enough bricks! I remember my best friend had that one. The Ice Planet series was brand new when we got them, and between us we had the entire Ice Planet collection, with some of the smaller sets purchased twice for the parts. I remember it actually snowed that year, and we got to play in the actual ice and snow which was awesome. The rest of the year, we liked to play at his house because it had a near-white carpet. I liked the fact that they brought back the magnets for Ice Planet 'cause I missed that with the M-Tron series. My favorite series was the M-Tron series. Between me and my friend, I think we had the following (plus spare parts): http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6989-1 http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6923-1 http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6833-1 http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6811-1 I remember when the made the transition to the Blacktron 2 series, in one of the pictures, the M-Tron guys were being hunted down by the BlackTrons. I always thought the M-Trons were cooler 'cause they had the magnets and stuff, so I would have my little brother be the BlackTrons and we'd fight. My best friend had the BlackTron base: http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6988-1 Plus a bunch of other ones- a whole lot more than what we had of the M-Trons, but since their windows were the same color, we could augment the M-Tron stuff with the Blacktron stuff. Going back even further in time, I did have two Futuron sets and I thought they were the coolest 'cause my favorite color was blue, plus because they were so old: http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6884-1 http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6830-1 Another reason I loved the M-Tron series was the color scheme fit well with my Ramagon set (Ramagons had lego panels so you could make your own space stations and vehicles and stuff with them. They were a building tool developed by NASA that were one of those things that are awesome but never get very far in the market): http://www.flickr.com/photos/46789389@N03/4292582913/ I remember we got the Black Knight's Castle too (I think my little brother got it for his birthday and I helped him build it): http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6086-1 It was a really creatively made castle, with a trap door, a hidden ghost compartment, a back door, etc. Lots of stuff packed into that castle. My best friend had some from the dragon knight series too. We also had a few random space police parts. This post has been edited by finalalias on 4th September 2011 04:56 |

Wanted to add to this thread but there is a website www.bricklink.com that sells sets and parts. I've used them before but not for 10 years. They have a feedback seller system like ebay but unlike ebay you don't have to bid, you just place orders.

Today, I went to the LEGO store for the first time since I moved. The Winter Village sets are adorable ( http://shop.lego.com/en-US/Winter-Village-Cottage-10229 ), but what I was really happy about was that I was able to extend LEGO to a new generation by buying my daughter this: http://shop.lego.com/en-US/LEGO-DUPLO-Pink-Brick-Box-4623 .

So, I figured I'd post this here for those Lego interested, I just started a project this weekend to sort the pieces and build all the Lego sets that I own in an effort to get a dedicated set up going. I have massive plans for this and am very excited about it. I can't wait until my own sets are built then I can use the rest of my random pieces (I bought a lot of 28 pounds of legos off of ebay like 10 years ago) and see what I can build. I am super excited about this venture and hope that as I post my progress and things here people will find it interesting. I already have some video game ideas for the project. I plan on recreating characters from Earthbound, including The Runaway Five and their vehicle. Anyway, I just thought I'd post here and I'll keep updating on the progress either either a blurb or a link to a blurb on my blog that will devoted to the project and the various things I do with it.
