With the release of this tremendously amazing game right around the corner I felt it was time to start this post. Hi I'm Zero_Hawk, you may remember me from such threads as "Tales of Random Idiocy," and "CoN Survivor 2004,".
Well, probably not, but no matter! This is a thread for MMOs! More importantly this is a thread for Star Wars: The Old Republic which comes out this month. If you're anything like myself or other denizens of CoN chat (I don't usually post on the forums because I'm lurking in there) you've been eagerly anticipating this game for years now. Myself and some other members (Hanyou, Dragon_Fire, Malevolence) would like to extend an invitation to those of you on the forum who are seeking a guild to play the game with. Let me get the shameless plug out of the way first. We'll be playing Empire side, some of us are WoW veterans while other are new to MMOs. So if you're looking for people to learn with, or perhaps veterans on the same level as yourself, you'll find both here. Just go to our guild's site and send us an application, all will be accepted. Again, anyone interested, you're more than welcome to come raise some hell with us Empire side. Now that we've gotten that out of the way, general discussion thread for The Old Republic. Are you looking forward to it? If so, why? You know the usual kinda stuff. I'm just so absolutely excited about this game. Having been able to experience two beta tests now I know 100% I am sold on every aspect of this game. The storytelling is phenomenal, they achieve immersion to an unexpected and very welcome extent. I love how much faster the combat feels. To me, TOR seems like Bioware studied every other MMO out there, took all the aspects that work, and then both improved and amalgamized everything to a level that has thus far been unseen anywhere else. Even if you're not an MMO fan, this is a game worth playing for the depth of story it offers. The game is something that can absolutely be played completely by yourself short of end game content, should you so choose. I can't even begin to describe just how completely enamored I am with every aspect of this game. In my eyes, TOR is a WoW killer. What are your thoughts and opinions? Click here to apply to our guild. This post has been edited by Zero_Hawk on 9th December 2011 10:36 -------------------- This one time I punched a bear in the forehead TO DEATH! Please validate our nerdy hobby by playing vidja games with us, won't you?
And don't wuss out and pick a force user. Real men use blasters. But seriously, if you're into the MMO scene this game is definitely for you. Gameplay feels familiar and comfortable, while still being different enough to have a learning curve. And it manages to inject an honest-to-god story for your character, complete with (in most cases) top-notch voice acting for every class and NPC you encounter. EDIT: If you want to find us in-game, we're usually on the server "Belgoth's Beacon." If you're looking for me, for some ill-advised reason, look for the Imperial Agent named "Wumbo". He's probably being smarmy and shanking someone in a cantina near you. Website recruitment for the guild has closed as the game is about to come out and early play has started. Anyone still interested in joining us we'll be the Bankai guild on the Belgoth's Beacon server, Empire side.
If you wish to join you can send any of us a PM on the forum or message us in game (I'll add my characters name as soon as I get my early access). Well, we picked up one interested person! I'd call this mission successful. I imagine it a bit early for people to really show interest in this game unless they, like us, have been eagerly waiting for it ever since it was announced. Hopefully after release and with time, a few more of our CoNfolk will decide to join the galactic struggle.
One thing I have to bring up is how much I love that your force alignment/morality alignment and your political alignment are separate. So, someone rolling the Republic side of the fence can still be as evil as they'd like, and likewise (and in my opinion, much more interestingly) we can see light-side Sith! Imagine that! The story telling and plot in and of itself have already seemed really impressive so far, but with that added detail, it really helps make the choices each character decides on feel that much more important. I've avoided MMOs (with the exception of Ragnarok Online) like they were the plague, but Knights of the Republic is one of my all-time favorite games. There was no way I wasn't going to jump into this head first. I can't wait. For those curious, I'm rolling a Bounty Hunter. Ideally one who lives out of a cantina making a living off Pazaak when there are no jobs or targets. -------------------- Okay, but there was a goat! |

We've even got some of the oldest forum members popping in to play with us! Super_Moogle joined our ranks this evening.
<Bankai> guild on Belgoth's Beacon, you can contact Zerohawk, Javii, Wumbo, or Kallarkl in game for an invite to the guild. I think my favorite aspect out of the things we haven't mentioned yet is how ToR is handling the crafting system. You pick one crafting profession and two secondary/support professions. Then can actually do gathering and such through your companions, going so far as to having them crafting or gathering stuff while you're offline. It's a real time saver and something that's going to affect the in-game economy in a very interesting manner. Not to mention that the most iconic lightsaber users also happen to be the biggest cry babies. Seriously, the Skywalker clan (Anakin and Luke) are such babies in their respective trilogies. Granted Annie manages to man up and become Darth Vader, but then I remember that his name is Annie.

Hey guys,
I have a question about this game, but I can't tell if it's off topic, so, if it is, sorry. The Dark Side is problably clouding my judgement. I have seen people (alright, it was on /v/, i admit) complaining that this game kills the Star Wars lore built in the first Kotor game. Is that true? Ok, ok, I know, Lucas himself kills the lore everytime something of the expanded universe is released, but for me (and many people out there), Kotor (by Bioware) was one of the greatest examples of expanded universe, but, you know, after DA2 e ME2, I fear for this game, and fear leads to anger... ps: I'm asking you guys because I know that 4chan is full of trolls, so I want the opinion of people I trust. In this case, you, the dwellers of the Caves of Narshe. -------------------- Live Long and Prosper! |

Honestly, this game has been great in terms of plot. I had only one real disappointment and really, it depends on what side of the force you play on. If you go darkside, you're going to come across certain events that will undermine a few events of the first KOTOR. It isn't a big deal since the light-side equivalent offers a completely different spin that is much more in line with both the chain of events and the characters themselves, not to mention Bioware basically stating that their 'canon' Revan was the light side back in KOTOR so, again, it kind of works out anyways.
Beyond that, all the lore is left intact and many of it gets expanded on in ways that I've enjoyed so far. None of the plot in the game proper has been bad at all. In fact, I think Bioware has been extremely careful of how they've treated this game in respect to the older KOTOR titles. With the sole exception of the Call to Arms flashpoint in game, it's been a really positive experience for me. -------------------- Okay, but there was a goat! |

I was playing this tonight and it brought and quite enjoying myself. I'm on Space Slug playing Empire side and I don't remember the name of my race (though in the game the race tended to be slaves to the Empire) and I'm playing him as a Sith Inquisitor. Anyway, as I was playing I was thinking, why can't Square Enix figure out this style for their MMO's? SWORT plays similarly to WoW and yet it's still fun because it's set in a different world. I know literally nothing about Star Wars lore and still find it enjoyable. I just don't see why Square Enix can't adopt the similar gameplay style for WoW and SWOTR. I realize there would be more similarities between the WoW and FF since FF generally tends to be more midevil but I think they could still get away with it, if they created stuff based on FF lore and had it be that combo of advanced technology found in FFVI and FFIX. Or for kicks an MMO based in the FFVII land.

Thanks, Dragon_Fire. You saying that makes me want to give this game a try, but I was surprised that I actually have to pay for the game before playing. I thought I could freely download the game, play for free for some time and then pay (or not). So I guess i'm not going to this MMO so soon, because 60 bucks is a lot of money for a MMO, a gender that never kept me for more than a month or two.
