Replaying it...(Opinions needed)

So I'm replaying FFVI now, and I've decided to limit myself a bit in terms of how OP I let myself become (not that I won't be anyway). What I've decided on is limiting the amount of Espers any character can equip to 1, and only 1, save for Terra, Celes, and Relm (who, if I recall correctly, has the next highest magic naturally... but I dunno, I couldn't find that data for some reason). Just so, once equipped, I won't be removing the Esper from every other character for the rest of the game, so the three mages won't have access to them. ALSO, once a mage has used an Esper, it is theirs, and they can re-equip it, but never trade it to another mage.

So here's the dilemma...
I'm not worried about the three mages just yet, but I am worried about my other characters... subtracting Gogo, and Umaro (who can't equip them), and the three witches, I've got 9 people left. Keeping stat bonuses in mind and, hey, why not the character's personality and job-class vs the Esper personally and it's move list, who do you all feel would best match/benefit from each Esper.

Tl;dr

If each character who can equip an Esper and isn't Terra, Celes, or Relm could only be paired with JUST ONE ESPER, which would/should it be?

Before I make any suggestions, I must ask, are you limiting every character to the first espers you come across, or do you want the later espers thrown in there as well? What I mean is, as you know, some espers aren't acquired until much later in the game. If that's the case, many characters won't get stat bonuses for a long time.

Absolutely, and I've considered this part of the challenge. The fact of the matter is, this strategy is going to involve a bit of a lower level WoB, where I'll probably try to beat the FC by using my three mages and Shadow. So, yeah, I'm definitely not limiting this. It's one character, one esper, no matter how late game I get that Esper. Part of this is planning my WoR accordingly biggrin.gif

And thanks for responding. Even if it ends up just being you that does, one person to sound off is still much better than what I have now, which is just ambivalence.

If you're going to factor personality into it, it probably makes sense to have Locke equip Phoenix. And if you're limiting non-witch espers to a single witch, Maduin makes the most sense to be one of the espers within Terra's arsenal. Possibly Starlet for Relm as well, given the painting connection, and might as well throw Palidor in Celes' inventory for the solitary island link.

Outside of the witches, perhaps you should keep Alexandr for Cyan due to it being a part of the Doma lineage. Also, Cyan is awful so who cares about stat bonuses for him?

Going by flavor, Shadow should get Shoat (Bio, Break, Doom--poison and death, fitting to his role as an assassin), Fenrir (Warp, X-Zone, Stop--befitting a stealthy character), or Phantom (Bserk, Vanish, Demi--less fitting (only because of Vanish) but, well, it's a phantom).

Also for flavor, Terra should get Maduin. Dunno what you plan on doing with the "three witches", though.

I would consider giving Cyan either Bismarck (the most basic magic of them all and a +2 Strength) or Odin (for the speed bonus).

I personally like learning at least bolt on every playthrough of ff6,Maybe even some easy heal spells too.

I usually wait to farm most of my ap for itangir,since he drops 0 xp and 10 ap.
Its usually best to farm most of your magic by then.Then again:I suppose the spawn rate of the cactuars are about the same?

Although it's not much of an opinion, it might fill you in on some things you didn't know about each character's most effective stats/esper usage, etc.

i only teach magic to terra, celes, relm, strago mainly. i dont equip espers to anyone else. I keep an eye on xp so that i can unequip an esper prior to leveling up, thennone of my characters get esper stat bonuses. its sort of an old school final fantasy job class approach
