I was playing mario64 recently, and i feel a strong like for the game.
It has its flaws of course:The view can make it hard to jump and you fall off.You sometimes dive instead of air kick and fall off a cliff like an idiot for an example, but all of these things are relatively minor in comparison to what it offers:The levels are bigger than the ones from before and offer to do more stuff per level rather than:skip to lvl 8 and beat game. This is one of the things i really liked about mario 64,that you have missions in the levels and offer various things to do.(I would probably enjoy super mario sunshine on the note) Zelda64:Previous zeldas were classics,i will not doubt that. zelda 1 offers some really epic music and epic gameplay elements and exploration. Zelda 2:I didn't like it all that much but i still think its a good game. Zelda a link to the past:Epic music(as always) great gameplay. The nostalgia is quite high when picking up this game in fact. Zelda64:One of the first things i think is really cool:You actually have something you didn't have in previous 2d :you have a horse to ride and you have to earn it.Once you earn epona, you can jump over fences and get to places otherwise troublesome.Plus:the introduction to the goro. I thought there were plenty of usefull songs in ocarina of time and this kind of made it easier to travel from and to places. I personally really really like ocarina of time and mario64. These two games were probably the best featured on that console for single-player fun. No one can argue that with a group of friends, Mario Kart 64 and Super Smash Bros. were the reason they stayed up til 4am.
But I digress. I adore both these games. They are staples in the franchise, ground-breaking in being the first 3D installations into the series, and put the console on the map. Mario 64 just felt like such a grand, jolly romp. It provided exciting new game mechanics, and fun new way to view Mario's world, and some great new music to tie it all together. Super Mario World had given us a broad land to explore, but Mario 64 trumped that easily, and gave us these worlds to explore all neatly packaged in one castle. And it wasn't simply enough to just run through the level, start-to-finish alive. Nono, you had goals to meet. You had health. No more dying at the end of 100 seconds or if a Koopa Troopa looked at you wrong. Finally, Mario had a voice, had life, had character. True, the meager cutscenes in SMW offered some character, but not like this. Mario 64 is definitely a timeless classic. Graphically it hasn't aged as well, but the fun and wonder of it will never die, for me at least. A definite must-have on the Virtual Console, or DS (the latter having even more fun content and additions to gameplay). And Ocarina of Time? My goodness, so amazing and epic in its time. True, Twilight Princess and Wind Waker have since perfected that grand, wondrous scale and world, but Ocarina of Time started it for me. Link to the Past had already seen to it that I fall in love with this character and the series, but Ocarina of Time added a new dimension (the third! lol) to all of that and cemented this franchise one of the greatest series' I've ever played, keeping me hooked ever since. Grand vistas on the Hyrule Field. Cavernous dungeons to explore. Massive bosses that towered above you, daunting and awful to face. It was simply awe-inspiring and every time I booted that cartridge, I knew I was in for adventure, I would be testing my swordsmanship and wracking my brain to solve puzzles (Water Temple, I hate you SOOOO much!). I enjoy this game so thoroughly, and will soon go through another playthrough on the Wii VC someday, or in the 3D version on the 3DS, once I can afford both (the new textures make the game look absolutely stunning!!!) Again, graphically, hasn't aged well, but the gameplay and story sticks. Both these games hold a spot in my tender teenhood years, offering fond memories, and fun times with friends. That was a nice trip down memory lane. -------------------- Games on the Go Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy: Four Warriors of Light Baldur's Gate Too much to play, so little time! Greg |

Yeah, both of these are no doubt among the greatest games ever made.
Old news, surely, but always great to look back at the games of years past, the games you grew up on. No game made today can amount to what games such as these, among numerous others, have done for me. |
