I was bouncing around the internet, reading stuff about old games that never made it to the US (including a good article about the original Mother game here) when I came across a copy of Nintendo's old censorship policy, with examples. That page is here. It's nothing really new, but I hadn't seen it before, and it left me with this nostalgic feeling deep inside.

I actually thought about this issue many years ago when reading in Nintendo Power about Maniac Mansion. The screenshots used for the magazine were different from what was used in the game. I played the game myself and noticed the difference right away from what was in my magazine. It wasn't till I was older (and the internet was there to solve my puzzle!) that I found out the exact reasons of why.

Also, I have that issue of Nintendo Power. When it came out, I was waiting for Mother to be released. I waited, and waited, still no Mother. Eventually I totally forgot about it till I found out that there was a connection with one of my favourite SNES RPGs (Earthbound!) and Mother.

I never had a Nintendo Power subscription. My first encounter with Nintendo's censorship was when FFVII was about to come out, and people were speculating about whether it, too, would be censored. (And the Honey Bee Inn would be what?) After that, I started to realize how some of the things in FFVI and FFIV had probably been changed.

I think it's sad how some games still do that. Take Star Ocean 2, for instance. Does anyone really believe that the food item you synthesize from grain and that requires an adult character to make is tea?

Do ye dare suggest that me darling, innocent characters were doing...DRUGS?! **GASP!** **hits the floor**

I'm guessing most of the censorship that went on and still goes on is pretty superficial. I might have noticed once in a while that scripts didn't make sense, but usually I was none the wiser. Ye know what they say: ignorance is bliss.

Not sure why I never responded to this topic before, or if maybe the source that Karasuman linked in her original post surfaced in another topic later on, but this is a great read for gamers who have an interest in censorship in games or even just the way things were done back in the day. Most of the links even still work, which is pretty great.

Necroing to bring interesting information to the masses!
