I voted 3. Because at school, I can't download anything, but I get on the CoN chatroom from the main site. When I'm at home, I open up the mIRC program.

Which ways do you people get there?

I use mIRC whenever I'm on there. I'm not on very often, though. I never got the Java to work for me, otherwise I might use that sometimes.

Maybe I'll get on tonight if I'm not playing SSBM.

I use mIRC most of the time, though occasionally I'll use CoN's Java client when I'm on a computer away from home.

Edit
And I've been a member here 6 months as of the date of this post.

I use mIRC, but just so you know there's more IRC programs for Windows/others than just mIRC such as X-Chat, BitchX, orr irssi.

I just hop on straight from the site, every time. I did download mIRC, but it was too ugly.

I use my IRC client, so I chose mIRC, even though I don't use mIRC (I use X-Chat), because that's the general meaning.

Of course, just to make sure people take note of this, mIRC is the name of the particular program, and there are other IRC programs out there. It would be nice, NED, if you could change the poll option to just say "IRC program", but I'm not sure if you can.

I find it most convenient to connect through my own program because the JAVA application takes forever to load, and doesn't let me change things like username (not nick) or let me connect to other channels or networks (as I remember). I very often chat simultaneously on several channels each of which is on a different network, so I find X-Chat particularly well-suited for the way I chat.

Like GMH, I use a IRC client, but NOT mIRC. The client I use is called Ircle, and it's the only chat client I could find that's Macintosh compatible. It's a sadistic program though, possessing a knack for kicking users off from anywhere between every thirty minutes to every two minutes, constantly. The whole point of unexpectedly quitting is to solicit money in turn for registration, but I'm much too cheap (and frustrated with it) to do so.

If I go 'bout a week or two without starting up the thing then it won't shut down prematurely the next time I use it for a total of one session. But once I close out and restart it all hits the fan again. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Dude, I hate Ircle.

I don't go there anymore.

Last time, I went using the chat client on the page. I used to go on mIRC.

I use mIRC most always, unless I'm on an unfamiliar computer.

I have too many PCs and devices nowadays - during the work week, when I'm on my work PC, I use Miranda, because it's one of those all-in-one pieces of software that gives me IRC, AIM, MSN, etc. all in one place so I can avoid installing a half-dozen different things on my work machine. If I'm on from my laptop, I still use mIRC, unless I'm someplace that blocks port 6667, in which case I use Mibbit on Darkmyst's site. I also have Colloquy on my iPhone, which is nice to check in on things when I'm bored and waiting on something outside of the house.

I really do want to get our own CoN Mibbit installation running at some point - Mibbit is a great web-based chat program that people here at CoN should try if they've never been in #narshe and don't want to go to the trouble of installing anything, even our Java app.

Does Miranda do thing that Gaim/Pidgin does, where it combines all your buddy lists into one list, interweaving people from different lists?

I don't like that, but I haven't figured out how to change it so that it displays separate buddy lists.

I think it does, but honestly, I don't use most of the IM clients enough to really care. I only have about five or six people who actually IM me rather than reaching me through other means these days.

I don't recall it working much differently than Pidgin in that regard, though I only used Pidgin for about a week a few years ago because it was what was available for Linux during the week that I was stuck using Linux for everything at work.

Since the topic's about IRC, I will say that the IRC on Miranda is very nice for a non-dedicated client, much better than the one I used back when I had Trillian, and better than I remember Pidgin's being, though, again, I didn't use that much.

I think that Pidgin's IRC client was pretty unwieldy the last time I used it. ...which was back when it was called Gaim, admittedly.

I think it did something where private messages are done like one-to-one chats on other IM services, and channels are done like group chats. Except other IM services are mostly dedicated to one-to-one chatting and group chat rooms are a rarity, while IRC is centered around group chatting, so my head still hasn't wrapped itself around this sort of organization yet.

Pidgin. I don't like to have too many apps installed plus I have the feeling that mirc is somehow "extremly large", I am talking about all the windows n stuffs.

I use VIRC. I've never liked using mIRC - in fact, I actually used the Java applet more often when my VIRC wasn't working. I kinda miss using it since it matched the CoN style, possibly to the point where I'd be tempted to use it if it had its own standalone thing.

Same for me, actually. I was on the Java applet for a long time because, well, I really had no excuse for not getting an actual client. I'm quite happy with VIRC, which I found to have more settings options than mIRC.

Occassionally I'll join by phone, in which case I use YAAIC, which works nicely.
