I guess my only beef with TVTropes is that they use so much jargon, I usually have to click about a dozen links in a single entry, just to find out what they're talking about (and then I have to click about a dozen links in those entries, and so on and so forth....), and it ends up being a real time sink. I try not to visit the site unless I have absolutely nothing to do, and all my wordly affairs are in order. tongue.gif But other than that, it's an interesting site, and the Tropers here at CoN seem perfectly nice.

Question for people listing (newer) memes: Do you think you might be getting "old" (old in internet terms, I guess), having starting to hit the "crotchety old man complaining about how x was better back in his day" phase of life?

*Shakes her cane* Ah, you kids today, with your 4chan, and your Rickrolling, and your "Stupid meme is stupid." When I was your age, all we had was the Dancing Hamster! And that's the way it was, and we liked it!

Not entirely, actually. I'd much rather have Nyan Cat than, say, Peanut Butter Jelly Time.

Besides, Team Fortress 2 didn't exist back in the day, and that's a source for some of my more favorite memes.

I agree! I just try never to go there because I've spent several hours reading about Xanatos Gambits or whatever just one too many times, always at the expense of whatever I "should be doing."

It's a little annoying when people ask me what country I'm from : / (for the record, no, I'm not white, which I could swear is the only indication that I might be from another country).

Strange one. I was just reading a brilliant blog article about 'infotainment' that had perfectly flowing paragraphs and an incredible attention to the reader's intake to the subject matter. I wasn't going to read it at first but then was hooked, didn't even notice until around the 4000 word mark. Then out of the blue he wrote 'something something w/ the artist' and I had to read the line a few times to see if he meant w/ him or w/o him. Why do that? It broke up what was otherwise a great article and my attention has now gone to CoN. I understand that if you're writing a quick piece you might put it in for the hell of it. But this was a carefully crafted spiel that didn't need a w/. Why do people use that? Is 'with' so hard to type? Is it funny? No!

I'm pretty sure I've done this before a few times so I'm being a standard hypocrite.

It took me a couple times of reading your comment to understand what you were annoyed with but now understanding it I definitely would find that annoying. I'm not a big short hand(I'm only forced to use it at work) in general even in texting (most of my texts are written out and punctuated almost properly) and I have friends that use "b" for be and "u" for you and it drives me crazy. I think "b" more in particular. Is it really that hard to add another letter? But definitely in an article it is totally inappropriate.

The only thing that annoys me about it is how I haven't seen a "troper" on any site that didn't seem to be dedicated to using the jargon even on sites that have no connection to TV Tropes. I can honestly say that I don't have any desire to learn about tropes, and as such, if someone thinks they need to reference one, for me it would be a lot less annoying to just have it explained rather than be presented with an esoteric (to an outsider) phrase that links off to another site.

(No offense meant to folks around here who do that, it's not like I'm planning to make it a rule of CoN or anything - just know that at least one person simply isn't interested enough to be entertained by these things.)

I agree with this. It's one thing to read about tropes if you're actually on the TVTropes site, but if I'm not on TVTropes, I'd rather see the referenced trope explained in plain English than an esoteric phrase that I have to follow a link to decipher. Overuse of jargon sounds pretentious to me.

But getting back to the topic, something I've found that annoys me is when people think spelling/grammar check is a substitute for proofreading. Every time I see a phrase like "clam down," or "you can thrust him," or "she's a wonderful human bean," or...you get the idea, it drives me up the wall! pinch.gif

This post is win.

I'll come up with a more thorough and better thought out list of behaviors that annoy me later, but for me, it's people not using their turn signals while driving.

This.

And then when I give such a driver a wider berth of time at an intersection, my dad complains that I'm needlessly giving up the right of way. What? I didn't know that they were going to run right until they actually turned right! How would I know they weren't going to turn left?

Quote (Magitek_slayer)
I never liked arrogant people.

Totally agreed. They should get off their darn high horse and do something useful.

Especially frustrating are those who are well and truly better than you and can't stop rubbing it in your face.

And when someone says "In my opinion" or "In your opinion" about everything. Of course it's your opinion; the words came from you mouth and not from mine. Knock if off ;P

Well, except when it's fact. tongue.gif

Quote (Neal)
Haha, this one is pretty silly, but it drives me absolutely nuts when I see people wearing bluetooth headsets in places where they can't or shouldn't be answering phone calls. I think they already look ridiculous enough in non-handsfree situations as it is, but I was seated on a plane next to some guy who had his headset on for the entire flight. Are you going to answer a call if it comes through? Just take it off. Additionally, some guy kept his on for the entirety of my sister's Masters graduation and it drove me up the wall.

Maybe plane guy wanted earplugs but didn't have them so he went with the second-best option?

People how state opinions as fact, period.

Anyone who uses 4chan memes.

Unfortunately, that would be a large number of memes. Unless you mean memes that haven't made it out of 4chan to the rest of the internet yet.

Quote (Neal)
This and Reddit images. I can't tell you how tired I am of trollface and FUUUUUU and all that garbage.

EDIT: Also, adjective noun is adjective. Grrrrr.

Yeah, overuse and inelegant use of memes is definitely annoying. But they can occasionally be quite appropriately used. "X Y is X" is a useful acknowledgement of one's mistake in some situations.

Quote (laszlow)
The internet-thing I can't stand nowadays is TVTropes.org. 100% quasi-intellectual bull**** sown and grown by the most elitist bunch of punks on the entire damn web. Their made-up language of categories and terms is an insult to the media they classify.

Hey! I'm a troper too! Though I rather rarely contribute to the actual site, or even the forum these days...

That said, trope names are gradually getting better, moving away from using particular instances to name things (unless said instances are really famous), such as how "The Daisuke" is now Hopeless Suitor.

It's still got a long ways to go before it becomes a truly scholarship-worthy work, but it's definitely got the seeds for it. I'd like to see more cross-referencing between internet and and modern-fandom names for tropes and classical/scholarly/recognized names for tropes, such as something that acknowledges that "Adonis" and "bishonen" both mean "really handsome guy", though with different deeper implications.

Quote (Dragon_Fire)
Nearly all the terms or concepts they 'pioneer' are gibberish at best and outright idiotic more commonly.

I'm quite sure that there are other collections of such terms for literary/story devices. In fact, I used to make them myself. *remembers a piece of paper where he once termed something the "Mewtwo Hypothesis"...even though he doesn't remember what it is...*

What TV Tropes is most useful for, I'd say, is not so much the naming of stuff but the publication of their names, effectively being a first step toward standardizing these names--and also reconciling the gap between "classic"/"serious" literature and modern popular productions.

Quote (TheRandomGambler)
Does anyone here use trope names to describe something IRL?

Occasionally, mostly due to convenience.

Quote (TheRandomGambler)
The Bakalave meme gets my goat every single time

The meme that's currently stuck in my head and pissing me off is the "POMF =3" meme. I find it safe to say that I have it worse than you.

I totally agree with this. There are a lot of trope pages that don't directly, clearly describe what they're talking about. There really ought to be a standardization in the way trope descriptions are written, and as far as I know there isn't one yet. I would push for one if not for the fact that I have far more important things to do in real life.

Yeah, I used to argue with people about site policy, wiki improvement ideas, renames, and more. This was two or three years ago. I've since given up caring. And things have slowly been falling into place anyway.

One of my pet peeve trope names is still around though: "Sean Connery is about to shoot you".

Quote (Insegredious)
I'd much rather have Nyan Cat than, say, Peanut Butter Jelly Time.

I prefer PBJT. It's got more material to reference, first of all. The Nyanyanyan etc. meme, and its derivative the Nyan Cat meme, are both rather hard to reference, and mainly possible only by showing people videos on the web.

Quote (Rangers51)

Precisely why I used to get heavily involved in rename debates. I argued for a lot of renames on the basis that it would make people who didn't know the reference of the then-current trope name more able to understand the name.

It got tiring after a while so I just stopped. And things have been slowly falling into place anyway.

....

...I just realized this: A trope whose name has bugged many people for years, but for which rename efforts had been repeatedly unsuccessful, finally got renamed recently.

What used to be "nakama" is now "true companions".

Well, that's a step up. I was pulling for "Band of Brothers" three years ago.

----

Okay, time for things that bug me.

* People who carelessly throw trash on the ground. And then glare at me when I tell them that they just dropped stuff.

* People who think that lots of quotes of famous people and inspirational sayings can actually be turned into useful policy. No, real-life governing does not work like that.

Edit
I suspect I'll get a "people who write gigantic posts replying to every other post in a thread so far".

I can't believe I never posted in this thread; I have a whole bunch of facebook-related things that I just can't stand.

First of all, angsty posts. It's awkward for the poster, it's annying to everyone who sees it. Does the world really need to know the intimate details of your increasingly complex relationship?

Secondly, the double ampersand. If I see a status starting with &&, someone needs to be punished. It's bad enough that the text that follows usually either satisfies my first complaint or is just rather sappy in general.

Next up is overly political fb-ers. Now, I think it is completely understandable that people make posts from time to time relating to politics. I certainly do. But to the person who is regularly making posts deliberately calling out whatever party he/she does not support as some form of Hitler reincarnate, I simply must ask: what are you trying to prove?

'Your' does not equal 'You are.' I know perfect grammar online is just being picky, but come on. It's 'your' and 'you're.' Can't we at least agree to spare these two words?

Whew. You know, after saying those, I can't tell if I feel more relieved or more like a jerk! tongue.gif

So, if you guys go to order coffee, please know what you're ordering! You can't just throw around a bunch of neat sounding words and then be mad that the words you used didn't mean what you think they did. ><

Frappucino= Starbucks made that word up. It means "Frozen cappucino," or blended with ice. Don't order a frappucino and then get mad that it's not hot!

I much rather someone come up to the counter and say, "I want something with caffeine, that's really sweet and has ice in it," and we can suggest something with those qualifications, than you fake like you know what you're doing. Like when someone ordered a chai latte and got mad it didn't have espresso in it... Chai is tea, fyi ><

(just teasing you- I dont really expect everyone to read an entire 4 page thread just to check that. If it were a shorter thread, I might, though.)

Just wanted to say, sorry if this thread annoys you guys! I wanted to make a thread where everyone can post in because it comes down to personal preference, not "Which ___ is the best," which to me, once everyone's opinions are out, is really open and shut. This is the type of thread I can be at work, or with friends, and think, "Oh! I can mention this in that thread!" So it's more of an ongoing thing.

If you guys have any ideas for threads that follow that line, post them!! I don't want to just complain about people all the time! haha. I always like threads that you can really see people's personalities in, so I would not complain to more of those! biggrin.gif

I have a new found annoyance. It happened once at a church activity and again at work on Thursday. To describe it best I'll have to play out the scenarios for you.

So last Monday we were playing Pictionary in a big group. Two people were drawing and people were shouting out answers. Well my team shouted out the answer and then someone on the other team said the same answer. So we were having the discussion about who got it first and whatnot and this guy on the other team kept saying, I didn't hear it, as if to say, because he hadn't heard it, it hadn't happened.

I had this experience again on Thursday after our team meeting. My co-worker Lori once pointed out a common phrase that I use, while speaking which is "and blah blah blah". So in the team meeting my supervisor used the phrase and I was trying to catch Lori's eye about it but she didn' t notice. So I mentioned it to her and mentioned that my supervisor is probably who I got it from because I unconciously pick up on other people's verbal habits. Well this girl Jesica (yes that is with one "s") who always has to be a part of every conversation (which is another annoying thing) butts in and says I've never heard Sonya (the supervisor) say that. And A I said well she said it in the team meeting. And she goes "well I didn't hear it." As if because she didn't ever hear it or notice it meant that it had not happened. So annoying! Like I'm making all this up or something. She even went so far as to ask other people if they'd heard it and was suggesting that we even ask my supervisor if she'd ever said it. Augh so annoying!!!!!!

Know what annoys me? People who complain all the time about all the things that bother them.  dry.gif

You know what annoys me? People who post something that's already been said in a thread because they didn't read the previous posts!

(just teasing you- I dont really expect everyone to read an entire 4 page thread just to check that. If it were a shorter thread, I might, though.)

Ahh, yes. Next time, I'll look more carefully. pinch.gif Heh..

On a topic based note, a new, very specific behavior that annoys me is people who decide that when teaching someone to wake board, sharp turns on choppy water are a fantastic idea.

Lastly! I totally have to agree with Chewbeka. I've had that happen many times. It's just really.. arghh.. frustrating. I can't think of a good word for it.

I keep watching this thread grow and grow, which I find extremely funny.

I really find it annoying when Obvious Troll is Obvious. Perhaps ironically, I mean this as wholeheartedly as I do sarcastically.

Anime-obsessed Americans. Excluding Dragon Ball.

No, I don't want to see your latest yaoi pictures. No, I didn't watch Full-Metal Alchemist last night. No, I don't find Ichigo irresistable and sexy. I'd like to cram your yaoi drawings down your throat, shove mercury-tainted FMA DVDs up your rear, and club you with Ichigo's femur.

On a related note, Japanese culture obsessed Americans who won't shut the heck up and act like they're gods.

And people who smack their mouths while chewing. Close your mouth, you yellow [insert naughty word of your choice here].
