I am a large fan of the Elder Scrolls series. God knows how many hours I devoted to Oblivion. So, naturally, when I saw the world premiere of the ESV, I basically started running around my house cheering. It has been too damn long, but now my curses at Bethesda have turned into praise. As the new and only trailer says, the game is set to come out November 11th of next year. The trailer itself manages to say almost nothing about the actual game while but at the same time is so incredibly awesome that everytime I watch it I get chills. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0fQWkk9Z6s&feature=fvst
So, are there any other Elder Scrolls lovers here who are as excited as I am for Skyrim? |

I know nothing of it yet, but I really enjoyed that sequence. At first, I could see that it was animated, but once it started shifting to the part revealing the dragon, it actually looked like they were filming something actually crafted! It was astounded by the level of detail put in by the team on making the mural come to life, while still retaining its, um, stillness? An awesome video, no doubt. I look forward to learning more as details ensue.

I was kind of hoping for a Tamriel-wide jaunt for ES5, but I guess not quite yet.
I'm looking forward to it, but I hope they take on board some criticisms from Oblivion. I personally felt that many elements of the game were inferior to Morrowind - stealing and enchantment was much less useful, presumably for game balance, but that removed the fun of stealing crazy gear and then enchanting it to make everyone take their armour off or to create a town of immobile people, for instance. Let me "break" the game if I want to! Lockpicking and conversations were just too easy and their difficulty didn't appropriately reflect your character's statistics, and the levelling system could do with an overhaul, such that choosing your most used skills as primaries and gaining levels is more helpful than not levelling and working on your "minor" skills. I'm hoping Skyrim looks a little more fantastic than Cyrodiil, too - it was very pretty and everything, but once you've seen one field of flowers, one forest and one mountain, you've seen most of the world in Oblivion. And don't get me started on the cookie-cutter, random-loot dungeoning. I'm full of complaints, aren't I. Don't get me wrong - I love the series and it's really the benchmark in terms of explory RPGing, but there's quite a lot I think ES4 could've done better when compared with ES3. So fingers crossed. |

Super-excited! Oblivion was enjoyable but could be a handful at times, and did have its share of...unattractive qualities, particularly generic dungeon-crawling and leveled loot. On the flipside, I'm not a huge fan of Fallout 3 and hope ESV isn't that much of a likeness. Other than that, can't wait. Was kinda hoping it would be out sooner but no helpin' that.

Quote I'm full of complaints, aren't I. Aren't you always? ![]() That aside, I'm completely stoked for this. I loved Oblivion: I completely maxed out everything. Unlike Tiddles, I really didn't mind random/leveld loot. Furthermore, I didn't mind the scenery: one of the first things I did in the game was go on a massive journey across the entire map with the goal of finding all locations and getting tons of alchemy items. And, for me, it was awesome. I can see where this would probably be pretty boring for a lot of people, but it was perfect for me to play after a workout or after homework, when my brain isn't quite firing on all cylinders. Can't wait to hear more about it. -------------------- Currently Playing : Final Fantasy V Most Recently Beat : Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Favorite Game : Final Fantasy X The newest CoNcast is up! In Morrowind, that tended to mean somewhat more varied scenery, and the chance of encountering a dungeon that was far too difficult for you - but with guile <cue theme> you could manage to escape them with some over-level loot and a sense of accomplishment. I missed that in Oblivion. There wasn't even one landmark half as cool as Ghostfence. I don't seem to mind levelled and random loot per se, as I got on pretty well with Borderlands employing a similar system. I think I just wanted there to be more chance of finding something really good by going against the odds. There's only so many 50p unenchanted rings you can get excited about. |

Guile ![]() I never played Morrowind, but given what you say I'm assuming I would've liked exploring even more. I somewhat disagree with you on the bit about being able to sneak into a cave, outwit higher-leveled enemies and make out with good loot: I was able to do this on a couple different occassions in Oblivion. Though, again, I'm guessing based on what you say that this was at least more achievable in Morrowind. They could have definitely had some more interesting landmarks thrown in in Oblivion to augment the whole mess of caves, castles, ruins, campsites and mines. I didn't mind them or anything, but a few more interesting landmarks in addition would have been much nicer. You're definitely right though; the game could benefit a lot from improving these elements. -------------------- Currently Playing : Final Fantasy V Most Recently Beat : Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Favorite Game : Final Fantasy X The newest CoNcast is up! I always said that the perfect WRPG would have Morrowind's setting and story with Oblivion's engine. Morrowind had a lot of aggravating problems, and Oblivion fixed literally all of them, but then screwed up a lot of stuff that Morrowind did flawlessly. Being a Zeppelin fan, I look forward to going to the land of ice and snow, where the midnight sun, etc etc, so I'm way looking forward to Skyrim. Here's hoping they have tons of factions to join like in Morrowind.

Actually I think Fallout 3 was a lot more like Morrowind than Oblivion was. When I was playing it last I thought about how brilliant it would be if it were in a fantasy rather than apocalyptic setting (the wastelands were brilliant nonetheless). A lot of the problems Oblivion had were fixed in Fallout, I felt. It had a great deal of scope for exploration and secret finding, the levels and areas were brilliantly put together, and the character building was much better. Not to mention the story manipulation is the best I've ever played aside from Deus Ex. On the back of this I have a lot of hope for Skyrim. -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. Me on the Starcraft. |

Oh the Tamriel wide jaunt has already happened and its name is Elder Scrolls: Arena. Haha just kidding that game is terrible, every town and dungeon is pretty much the same. Hopefully the release Skyrim for the PC, or else I can't play it. I loved Oblivion, but when I think about it, Morrowind was a lot more fun. I can still have a good time, because there are still more dungeons to discover in Morrowind. Plus, the map system in Oblivion made it so easy to not use your adventure skills, especially when you're low-level. Morrowind had a special charm, such as the talking mudcrab or the magic doors ("the star is the key"). I think the only mistake with the lockpicking system was the Skeleton Key, it was a cheap artifact, but my largest complaint was the degrading of daedric armor. I had so much fun finding it in Morrowind and then they made it not that great and plentiful in the next game! What a rip-off. -------------------- |

I had so much fun finding it in Morrowind and then they made it not that great and plentiful in the next game! What a rip-off. I'd agree with Harlequin on this one as well, and hope that it get's fixed for Skyrim. I'd say they ought to just reconfigure the spawning engine a bit- having only dealt with uniform auto-spawn creatures before- such as town guards and, all too memorably, the Cliff Racers in Morrowind- it was new ground for the series to create a human respawn encounter that levels with you. I attribute a lot of it's flaws to this. Maybe they could change it to include random types and assortments when the bandits spawn. Better armor could be introduced into the game slowly as you level, just like before, except that it's only available as a possibility on a spawn- and, ideally, an increasingly smaller one as the armor gets better. That would even seem more realistic for a bandit- probably broke, but maybe got lucky and scored a knife or boots at some point... Oh, by the way, have I mentioned yet how absurdly excited I am about this game? ![]() -------------------- If you've been mod-o-fied, It's an illusion, and you're in-between. IGN.com put up an interview with one of the developers of Skyrim, it's pretty interesting.
http://pc.ign.com/articles/115/1158651p2.html Among other things, the interview covers armor/weapons (there will be more than Oblivion), the size of the map (about the same size as Oblivion), the leveling system (somewhat similar to Oblivion, but with greater emphasis being placed on experience from high-leveled skills), dual weilding (yes) and game structure (it'll be set up in classic Elder Scrolls style, with a bunch of quests in addition to a main story, which takes place 200 years after Oblivion). Unsurprisingly, I am more excited than ever. My social life dies on 11.11.11. -------------------- Currently Playing : Final Fantasy V Most Recently Beat : Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Favorite Game : Final Fantasy X The newest CoNcast is up!
