So, I have beaten quite a few games over the years but there are just two games that I never seem to be able to beat the last boss no matter how many times I try. I cannot seem to be Chrono Trigger and Arc the Lad Twilight of the Spirits. I've tried countless FAQs and strategies and I just can't seem to do it. This evening I tried Arc the Lad, which has literally been sitting on hold for the last 6 years and I even found a strategy in here on how to beat it in an old forum topic but to no avail. It drives me crazy. I've played both games all the way through but cannot beat their final bosses. What are some of the games that have tripped you up?

Folklore. For some reason the final boss won't die.

Valkyrie Profile 2 Silmeria. I got stuck and can never beat the boss, or bring myself to restart. (I can't leave the area until I beat it, but I'm massively under powered to do so.)

Hey, I've at least beat FFVI and FFIV which would be more crucial of being a CON member. Admittedly though, I haven't done a complete second play through of either because I remember the parts of the game I hated, at least in FFVI. I hated Cyan's dream and I still hate the battle for the Esper with Kefka and his army.

Cyan's dream isn't difficult if you plan well for it: Ribbons, and Genji Gloves/Black Belts for quick killings, etc. Same for the esper battle.

I beat Zelda II for the first time two or so years ago. I gotta say, it was a great accomplishment to finally beat it.

Games I can't beat, no matter how hard I try, are Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts and Castlevania IV, both for the SNES. Especially Ghouls 'n Ghosts. I can't even get past the second stage.

^ It took me many years before I finally beat Super Mario Bros. 1 fair-and-square on a console.

I tried doing it with Super Mario Bros. 3 but then I forgot one key point, which is that...

I understand that totally Glenn. My housemate and a friend and I spent a caffeine fuelled week playing 2 player and taking it in turns until we'd finally beaten the original Mario Bros.
Although by 'we' I mean me XD

I loved the plot enough to overlook any moments when I got squashed biggrin.gif

As I mention all the time, I have notoriously been unable to beat Orphan in FFXIII. I have decided to give it another go once I get back home this summer, though, so I'll have a shot at redemption.

My recent playthrough of FFVI I had some bad luck, but like I said, it has everything to do with not being prepared. But why are you having trouble with Orphan (btw, I haven't played FFXIII)? Is it one of those bosses that's super-powerful or one that does a lot of status-effect changes?

Too many games to count. Well, probably not, but sometimes it seems that way.

Immediately coming to mind are Xenogears and Breath of Fire 3 for the exact same reason: I'm stuck in a late-game dungeon that's long, boring, and frustrating, and decided to give up on the game. It's been so long for both of those that I don't really remember the storyline well enough anymore to just pick it up again. Might try replaying them on an emulator some day.

That's happened to me on nearly every FF game. I've had to just started over.

I would have to put BoF3 on the list of games that I'm surprised that I beat. It was a good game and had a good story (though admittedly I only have vague visual recollections of the game) but what I definitely do remember was thinking that I was never going to play that game ever again. Once was enough!

Yeah, BlitzSage, it's got a move that can automatically kill a character (and it's an auto-game over if your leader dies) as well as this nasty attack that fully immobilizes your characters. That said, it shouldn't be this hard- I seem to be the only one in this hemisphere having the problem tongue.gif

Yes, I have consulted many a guide and fellow CoN member. Mal tried to help me quite a bit last summer, but to no avail. It's really rather depressing heh. I believe that it's simply because my characters are under leveled; my damage output is rather lame in comparison to what is suggested. I was just a bit too lazy to go back and train and go through those funky last areas all over again. Like I said, I'll probably begin Round 2 sometime this summer.

I'm still stuck on the battle with Odin. I cringe at the thought of going back through a bunch of meaningless battles just to give Hope synergist skills which I neglected to do. The story is really interesting though....I just wish I didn't suck at everything that isn't a true turn-based battle.

The chances of him using it and it working are low, you can reduce the chance of it working on the target character further by equipping certain armour. The chance is then divided by three as it actually has to hit the main character for a game over. Nevertheless to have a successful looking attempt cut short by this is a real pain thumbdown.gif

It took me a fair while at first, although mostly because of my stubborn refusal to get help. I remember getting to this point around the only fortnight it got hot in England last summer. A trip to buy groceries had me walking around town, zombielike with my head full of paradigms and strategies - trying to work out how my next attempt would go.

Then back to my room to sweat profusely during another failed attempt at beating him.
FRIGGIN' HATE ORPHAN.

Still, I look back on the whole experience fondly wacko.gif

Battletoads is probably the hardest game I've ever played, and have never beaten it without cheating. The closest I legitimately got before running out of Continues was Rat Race, I believe. As hard as it is though, it is damn fun to play.

Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts is another one I haven't beaten without cheating, but I tend to blame that one more on the jump mechanics. Or for the fact that they make you play the whole damn game again on a harder setting to find the stupid bracelet. Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts was hard for the sake of being hard, and not in the fun way, I've come to believe. I guess this game has made me bitter over the years.

I also don't think I've ever beaten the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game. I always measured my success on that game on if I would beat that underwater stage where you had to diffuse the bombs and not drown. I don't think I've ever held my breath so often and for so long as when playing that awful stage in that crazy hard game. Haven't really played the game since I was a kid, though. Maybe I'll dust it off some day and give it another whirl.

I'm basically at the last boss, but every time I start it up, it plays more like those fight's you're SUPPOSED to lose, lol.

This for me has to be 7th Force from Gunstar Heroes.

I always have trouble with the handgun anf the crab. Most annoyingly my brothers can both destroy this thing easily.

A few years ago I tried a game called mushihime-sama. It was so hard, not just the boss that's famous for being so hard(Spiritual/Queen Larsa) but that game was like space invaders meets Pikmin on speed for how fast paced and screen-filling it was.

Lastly, and probably the only boss I will never beat is Mike Tyson fromn Mike-Tyson's punch-out. I never played the re-release but I believe there was a similar(identical?) character called Mr. Dream. What made Tyson so hard was that you had to hit him two dozen times before he goes down once, he can hit you to 1/8 of your full energy with one punch and he attacks pretty relentlessly whilst guarding all the time.

Far too many games will top that list for me, including Final Fantasy 13.
I think the biggest pain is Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. The truth is that the main story is easy to get to and win, but doing all the missions is like pulling teeth. I've had the game for the last 3 years and still can't find the time and patience to do it.

Up until recently, I'd shelved Mass Effect 2...not because it was too hard, but completing the Miranda/Jack loyalty missions triggered an unskippable event that forced me to take a side because I didn't have enough renegade/paragon points to tell BOTH of them to stfu. It pissed me off so much I stopped playing the game for half a year.

I ended up editing my save game to get the needed points and found out neither R/P options really give me the opportunity to tell these two off like I reeeeeeeally wanted to.

I'm being totally serious when I say this: Final Fantasy I

I want to play it the original way on the NES but it seems like it's not in the cards. Every time I've tried to play something has gone wrong. Last time the battery (for the save) was dead and it kept losing my game every time I turned it off. I got the brainy idea of leaving it on overnight but the next morning it was blinky screen mad.gif

I'm pretty sure eveyone knows what you're thinking, but it's actually a good idea.

I'm interested in this myself; does anybody know how to create backups of my NES games? I actually have a Famicom and FDS too, so I could even transfer my 14 year old savegames.
