So something I've been playing towards finishing every Final Fantasy, whether it be the original or a re-release.
so far I've done I, V, VI, VII, X, XIII Not sure which to go for from there ![]() So yes, you all like to have opinions, share them: what next? -------------------- www.youtube.com/blinje The victor sacrificed the vanquished to the heavens |

'tis foolishness. If all were so easy, why, none would suffer in this world.
i.e FFIX. Hands down. |

I'd say either IV or IX. They're both fantastic, and I think you'll like them.

I wouldn't go for IX yet, just because I think it's up at the top of the list and you might want to save it for after you play one you don't particularly like. If you're bent on playing them all, maybe do 12 next, since it's pretty polarizing and if you don't like it, at least you're getting it out of the way.
BTW, the running commentary on 8 sounds awesome and I'd definitely read/watch that. -------------------- Hey, put the cellphone down for a while In the night there is something wild Can you hear it breathing? II and III, only just to get them over with. II's gameplay is insane (and not the good kind), and III is sadistically difficult.

Quote When i play that one I'm going to do a running commentary on CoN, being as scathing as I can, for the amusement of you guys. ( if anyone likes the idea that is ). I'll take the opportunity, as I usually do, to say that I like FFVIII quite a bit. Quote Sounds incredibly stupid close minded stupid. I'll second, seems rather silly to me. In your case I would probably go with FFIX. You'll have to play FFIV at some point too, of course. Neal's idea certainly has value though. Do a running commentary of all of them! Yeah I'd definitely listen to a rant about FFVIII as much as any game. Personally I don't mind FFVIII. I think it's one of the worst FF games but at the same time better than around 70% of all the other games I've played. Give it a chance! If you go into it with an open mind and a lot of free time you'll get a lot out of it, even if it's just good jokes.
If you want to play one of the best FF games then play FFVII again. If you want to play something new that's strong in every aspect of everything then play FFIX. FFXII is, yeah, polarising, Neal's exactly right. I rate it as one of my top games, certainly top 3 FF games. FFIV is a great game, nothing too demanding yet surprising at the same time. Forget all that, just play FFVIII and see what all the fuss is about. -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. Me on the Starcraft. |

With VIII I'm more curious about why the majority of CoN seems to dislike it, my commentary would just be as amusing as possible, not disparaging it for the sake of doing so. There's still a chance I'd play and end up liking it! I'd get on with it around now but I'm slightly busy, so maybe in June. I'd say it's a safe bet to go with XII. Though, if you really are dedicated to playing through every single one of them you might want to get II out of the way now because it's the only FF game I consider actually a chore to play through.

I'm a big believer in saving the best for last, so I'd say go with FF2 or FF3 next. FF2 was fun, but the gameplay could be frustrating, since it was nearly impossible to have a well balanced character, and it took an insane amount of grinding to level up the magic spells. FF3 was fun and challenging as well, but its job system wasn't as good as FF5's, I thought. Never played FF8 or FF12, so I don't have an opinion on either. Haven't played FF9 either, but I've heard lots of good things about it, so I'd save it for later. And I'd finish with FF4, since it's one of the best games in the series, IMO.
Good luck playing through all the Final Fantasies. Keep us updated on your progress! ![]() |

Well, there's two remakes for FFIV that you can play on the DS, the GBA remake, and the DS remake. I guess that depends on whether you want to play the original version. The DS version adds 3D scenes. -------------------- |

IV in this form has also been highly recommended to me by friends. Interestingly the DS version has a higher overall score than any other version, including the original. Proof I suppose that most of the strong criticism comes from FF purists and gaming nostalgics.

Haha no problem. Being in the same situation as you and looking for the best way to play that game, I can say that if graphic adjustments are the only main difference, I have no problem picking up the DS version. I know it's taboo for old-school gamers to say it, but graphics do add to the game.

I am ´personally not a fan of FF I - II, but I know some of those boards are. In my eyes they simple have an outdated gameplay which is worse than the old graphic for the game. I havebought the GBA version of those about two years ago and only played FF I once and it wasn't even such a joy for me (I have played both games before with the PSX version years ago).
I don't think it is wrong to start with the best ones - Once you have gotten to the not-so-good FFs you might want to re-play the best of the series before you have tried the other games. Aside from FF II I only know FF IX from the games you haven't played and I highly recommend it. It is different frmo FF VII & FF VIII mainly because it takes some things back to the roots - The story takes place in the dark age and like in the games before VII you are commanding four characters again in the heat of the battle. The characters have more their own roles than in FF V, VII & VIII, but still have some freedom to customize them. I guess it can be a bit compared to FF VI & the espers. |

I agree with you. It is a lot like reading literature. You start with the classics, because they are the reason that literature is important. And the great FF's are the reason Square is important as a game design company. Don't skip over the others though, because people might be wrong about their quality. I'm a huge FFIV fan: I played it enough as a kid that I can proudly say the game was partially responsible for my learning to read. I know it's too late, but I would play a version of the game more faithful to the original before I play the DS one. FFIV DS is a great overhaul of a great game, and I'm happy that you're playing it regardless, but I would play SNES hardtype or (if you don't want to deal with roms/importing) the GBA version instead. FFIV is certainly good enough to play twice.
The DS version will not give you as much of a picture of the impact FFIV had on later games, which I think would be part of the experience for someone playing through the entire series. Graphics and sound overhauls are not a big deal to me, and I found the voice acting to be worth avoiding. On the other hand, FFIV DS isn't just a graphical overhaul of the original. A lot of new stuff was added, and a lot of stuff added for the PSX/GBA versions was re-added. I really didn't feel like messing with the minigames, but the new content is worth checking out. So yeah, I don't know. I guess it doesn't much matter which one you play as long as you're playing FFIV. In other news: I didn't think FFVIII was so bad. Certainly a let-down if you compare it to VI and VII, but come on. |
