It really does seem like yesterday that the first trickles of news about the Revolution started showing up, even though in reality it's been very nearly seven years. Today, though, while Nintendo won't cop to it, gaming news outlets have begun to report that the Wii's successor will be out late next year.

It appears that Nintendo is willing to admit that they will no longer be able to survive on first-party console games, and that the new box will be better equipped to deal with, at the very least, the current competition. Of course, there's no way to know how Nintendo's next outing might cope against the next Xbox or Playstation, as there are just way too many variables way too off in the future. However, it does seem that the specs or even prototypes might already be in the hands of some third-party developers, which provides a nice bit of lead time into day-one titles for next Christmas.

Lending further credence to this still-not-official news is the fact that the current Wii is looking to get a price cut in May. This will be only the second price drop for the system, and the new price will settle in at $150.

For more information, it's probably going to be E3, which is in early June. However, it's all but certain that someone will break more concrete information sometime in the next eight weeks.

I had recently read an article, too, saying that a new Nintendo console should be expected in the near future, as seven years is the longest period they've gone thus far without a new console released. It certainly appears that they're starting off on a much better foot this time around, though I suspect being the first console of a new generation puts that company at a disadvantage.

Sad that I won't be in the country for E3 sad.gif

Edit
But hopefully I'll have CoNchat set up for my phone?

It seems more plausible, since the Wii of all this gen's consoles left much more room to improve. If they are successful with the 3DS, as I think they will be, it will allow them to maintain the lion's share of the market for the next few years. I think it would be very smart from their perspective, as other consoles use their higher technology as their main selling point. If they use the DS's and Wii's success to equal the other console's power, Microsoft and Sony would have little to compete with.

As for the first next-gen console being a disadvantage? I'm not so sure. For one, they're already behind on a tech-level. But, if they do this quickly, they could beat the others to it so fast that later they could update and catch back up again.

Well I myself was happy with the Wii. Keeping up with the times is getting to be annoying with systems getting more and more expensive. I am dreading this big time it better be backwards compatible with Wii,Wii Ware and Virtual Console. Have a hard drive and controllers for both regular and motion games.

Also I doubt this but I want it to be a top loader too! not some slot or tray that could malfunction and scratch my games to hell and back.

It might very likely be backwards-compatible with WiiWare and the Virtual Console because a lot of people will be wary of losing the games they bought on that service. They won't want to lose these customers.

And for that matter, it's just a matter of putting an emulator on a very powerful machine anyway. Not much of a big deal.

Can't you put VC games on SD cards?

I don't own one either. PS3 seemed like a better deal.

Because my gaming budget is basically less than $50, currently. So I won't be getting a Wii 2 either.

Maybe I'll end up getting a Wii a few years down the road when it becomes like $50 used. Same goes with a DS (specifically, one that can play GBA games).

The Wii is a better deal, in my opinion. Just that I don't have the money to buy it (plus the games that I'd need to make use of it). I do currently have a copy of Metroid Prime 1 (GC), and a memcard.

The Wii has a selection of games that I am more interested in. First, it has the GameCube's library and its own library, with titles such as the Mega Man collections, Mega Man Network Transmission, Tales of Symphonia, the Metroid Prime trilogy, the Fire Emblem Radiance duology, and more. And then it has all the Virtual Console and WiiWare games.

My only reasons to get a PS3 would be to play a few PS2 games that I've wanted to play for a while, since I don't have a PS2. However, the PS3's significantly higher price makes it far less worth the investment. Plus, I have no blu-ray movies to watch, and I'm unlikely to get any since I'm not a big movie buff anyway. There are some nice RPGs for the XBox 360, but those I'll have to forgo...or wait another decade for me to be able to emulate them on my home computer or something.

Hopefully, the Wii 2 will continue this tradition of catering to basically all the non-hardcore gamers out there. Maybe when I do get myself a stable income stream I will consider it.

You could always just buy a PS2. Arguably the best console with the best selection of games and all that.

I've gotten good use of my Wii, and will continue to. I love it, what Nintendo has done with it, and pretty much all of their first-party games have been hits.

My only gripe is their online service. I like that it's free and all that, but I just don't feel attached to it. I'm not looking for XBL or anything, but I just want something that organizes online features a little more cohesively, and lets you find other players with great ease.

Also, if I were to buy a second Wii, is their any way to transfer my WiiWare/VC purchases to it? Since it's not done through an account username like XBL, but just your credit card info, no? I'm assuming it's registered to that system specifically, so you can't go and use it on another hard-drive like the XBox allows, right? I'd like that to be streamlined, in the even that you do purchase a newer console or a second console or somesuch.

In the future market, though, i don't think Nintendo will have any issues. They have the greatest nostalgia value going for them at this point, and just have a great deal of longevity and core business model at their backs.

I will when CT and FFVI come out. I also need to get FFIV and Secret of Mana. The VC is a great selling point, I believe. But I do agree. Their online service is horrible. If they could come out with something on the same level as the other services, they could really corner the market.

I will when CT

I'm kinda' excited for that, but at the same time, I still have the PSX, version, so I debate the use in getting that one...

It's also slated for iOS, I think? I may have heard that, not sure. If that's the case, though, I'd like to get it in portable form. I'm also waiting to want to spend the money on the DS version. Either or would work for me!

I do have SoM on the VC, and it plays swimmingly, of course.

My PSX version is terribly slow. It takes fifteen seconds to open the menu.
