Also self-explanatory.
The friggin' Crystal Tower and World of Darkness from Final Fantasy III. I can just imagine the planning meeting in the Squaresoft offices all those years ago: "Hey...guys...I just got a hilarious idea: what if at the top of the Crystal Tower, there was ANOTHER world where the real final boss is? But she's, like, ridiculously powerful, so - bear with me - we put in four more really difficult bosses that can be optionally defeated to make her weaker?" "Haha, man, that's awesome. So including Xande, that's what, six bosses in a row? I think that's some kind of record!" "Oh, let's make it so that they can't leave the World of Darkness once they enter!" "Yeah, great idea! And we already decided that players can't buy Phoenix Downs or save in dungeons! Man, I can't WAIT to see the players' reactions!!" "Neither can I!" The main reason I never finished Final Fantasy III DS. I've been meaning to give a translated NES version a shot, but my sense of judgment has been giving me periodic kicks whenever that thought pops into my head. Even though I really like the job system, I feel like FFV & the various Tactics games did it a lot better. -------------------- |

Ha, immediately upon seeing the topic title I was thinking FF3. I nearly threw my DS out the window when the Cloud of Darkness killed me the first time I fought her.
Instead, I will submit the "last" two levels of Super Meat Boy. I put last in quotes simply because you can do them in order, but these pretty much take the cake. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izoCG3XtfIc Somehow beating these weren't nearly as frustrating as FF3, though. -------------------- Hey, put the cellphone down for a while In the night there is something wild Can you hear it breathing? The entire last quarter or so of Indigo Prophecy. What started out as a cool psychological-thriller-intrigue game basically ends in a giant cluster****.
I'm also going to hate on Tales of Legendia a bit. The first half is an alright JRPG, the second half reuses all of the same dungeons from the first half with different bosses and loot. All of the second-half bosses are a bunch of palette swaps and evil versions of your party members. Unforgivable. This post has been edited by laszlow on 22nd March 2011 22:05 -------------------- |

Demon Sword on the NES. Although I suppose the entire game is just bad since all of your human enemies are literally *falling out of the sky onto your head to damage you*, but the last level really is completely ridiculous. Hopefully somebody else has played it here and knows the pain of a level that is so hard to navigate, with your main objective being falling down (except that there's lava everywhere to ensure the player tears keep flowing). The last boss is also obnoxious just for the sake of being obnoxious.
Here's a link if you'd like to be entertained with its playthrough: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKm0k0fQl3g&feature=related Also, they put the actual demon in that game at the end, which may have salvaged this horrible nightmare but then I think the developers got lazy and basically killed the demon for you. Thanks...? This post has been edited by TheEvilEye on 23rd March 2011 00:29 |

Going to also agree on FFIII. That game was pure Nintendo Hard in general. Only FF I haven't finished of the main numbered ones (XI and XIV doesn't count and I don't own XIII

This is a difficult topic for me, because I rarely go out and buy that many games, only games that are pretty highly recommended to begin with. But, for me, the game I was kind of disappointed with its ending (not saying anything about the rest of the game, which I loved) was Fallout 3. I'm not sure what I was expecting from it, but I felt the rest of the game was epic, and the ending wasn't.

No arguments here Blitz..
The part just before the final storyline quest Possible spoilers: highlight to view was just everything done right, compared to the end which is recapturing an old area for a less than climactic battle. Games like castlevania 1 plain make bring my piss to a boil.
Seriously!! wtf man? you have to dodge an infinite army of medusa heads flying at you+a stupid axe knight+have enough health then to defeat the grim reaper. I mean:the least they could do is leave a refill at the end. And those stupid hunchbacks OH MY GOD!! the hunchbacks from hell who jump around constantly making it nearly impossible to hit. I swear, save states was made for games like castlevania 1,3 and ninja gaiden. -------------------- We are stardust. Our bodies are made from the guts of exploding stars. Neil Degrasse Tyson. |

The end boss of super mario galaxy 2. you fight this giant fuck turtle that can fire lasers and breathe fire and after 10 minutes of hysteria you think the job's done and then SUPRISE BUTTSEX. you fight bowser one more time...except this takes like 10 seconds....also i'm not saying i don't like the ending to FFVI but what happened to Kefka? He just turned into deity dust and then fluthered away.

FFIII was pretty bitchy. I had to grind for a good long while before I attempted it, but it definitely staved me off of it for a while.
For me, though, I have to say Fable II. Possible spoilers: highlight to view Seriously? All leads up to an epic confrontation with lord whatshisface and all you have to do is shoot him once while he's monologueing then make a "difficult" choice? Boo! Bioshock was actually much easier than I was expecting in the end too, and I went through it on hard and saved every Little Sister. I was curious to see what it would be like on easy. Oh, and Borderlands! I was a Hunter and that final boss was a cakewalk. His massive amount of HP was the only thing to drag that battle out! Quote Oh, and Borderlands! I was a Hunter and that final boss was a cakewalk. His massive amount of HP was the only thing to drag that battle out! Puh... I agree, I was pretty disappointed with the end of Borderlands. Luckily the second playthrough option was awesome. I don't think I've ever played a game with a super hard last level. Yes, for some reason I have never been able to beat Orphan in FFXIII, but that's just the boss. I do remember, when playing through Grandia, having a lot of trouble in the final level. It's a big mess of an area with creepy looking walls and surroundings (IIRC the final level is inside of the giant evil creature, and you have to defeat the central part of it). The level itself wasn't all that difficult, but I had a grossly insufficient stock of items, which I didn't realize until I'd gotten about halfway in and a bit lost. I ended up desperately trying to avoid enemies, running out of items anyway (aside from a few that I would need to use to recover before the final boss), and then depleting all my MP for healing as well. Just when I was pretty sure that my party was screwed, I just happened to wander into the room right before the final boss ![]() -------------------- Currently Playing : Final Fantasy V Most Recently Beat : Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Favorite Game : Final Fantasy X The newest CoNcast is up! One more worth mentioning: Devil May Cry 2.
DMC1 is a blast - really stylish, atmospheric, and challenging. DMC2, well, isn't. You can beat the final boss by equipping your pistols, standing at the back of the room, and mashing the shoot button for about 6 or 7 minutes. The whole game is about as interesting as that final encounter. Luckily, Capcom learned from their mistakes and made DMC3 even crazier and tougher than the original. -------------------- |

I usually hate more or less really bad or easy last bosses, but I could not name all here.
However, I do agree about what "laszlow" has said concerning Devil May Cry 2, which was generally speaking horrible all around. Devil May Cry 3 however owns. |

The last level in ff3 on the nes is also a pain in the butt.
Seriously:you can't run away at all you are forced to over level and by the time you make it to the optional bosses and kill them, they are kind of too easy because you over leveled and then you are forced to train to make the game possible but its not as good inside so you are forced once again to go leave but after you are done training and got all the new special jobs and assign them to people, you become op god mode by the time you get to the top because you are seriously over leveled. Seriously!! its ridiculous that i can't run away i mean:WTF? This game makes me really really mad. In terms of difficulty and patience in rpgs:you guys should play ultima series. Seriously:try ultima 8 and underworld, you need a ton of patience to beat it. Drill Dozer for the GBA. It's not the last level as much as it is the final boss, and it's not bad as much as it is disappointing.
Possible spoilers: highlight to view Basically, right when you get to the final boss, the Drill Dozer finally breaks down from overuse, leaving Jill to fight the boss with only her fists. Which she does - one punch in the face takes down the final boss. I mean, it's hilarious, but not quite what I was looking for in a real boss fight. A crappy end to an otherwise great game. I don't think it's one of the worst last bosses ever, but the Donkey Kong Country Returns final boss is strange. Played alone, I thought he was extremely hard. But playing with two people made it extremely easy. The only reason I'd bring it up here at all is that the rest of the game is phenomenal, and it just didn't seem to live up to that standard.

Xen in the original Half-Life. Which is a shame, because the level is gorgeously designed. It just... doesn't work in an FPS. Super Mario Galaxy did a similar thing except much better years later.

Earthbound for being depressing as hell and giving you one serious case of mood whiplash. And some of those random encounters get pretty rough, even when maxed out. (Though here, "worst final level" in a good way)
I haven't played FFIII since well before the DS version was even announced, but I remember having to use savestates in the emulator I was using. So that gets another vote from me. (Here, in a bad way) I'm coming to the realization that I kind of suck at finishing games (I put them down when I get close to the end and just don't go back), so I guess that's it for me. -------------------- "I had to write four novels before they let me write comic books." -Brad Meltzer |
