So, I just ordered a Xbox 360 with my work bonus. I have a couple of buddies that will let me play through some of the basics. I plan on playing Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, and Bioshock series. I also purchased Blue Dragon and Resonance of Fate. I'm looking for some more suggestions for some good 360 games.

Any suggestions that aren't racing or sports games that are must haves?

I plan on playing Mass Effect

Make sure you get Mass Effect 2, it's the best game released on the 360.

Other games I can think of are:

Dead Space series
Fallout series
Star Ocean: The Last Hope
Fable series
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Left 4 Dead series
Battlefield: Bad Company series
The Orange Box
Gears of War series

I don't want to influence your playing of these games, but if you're wanting to just play the good, or certainly the best of these series just play Mass Effect 2, Creed 2 and BioShock 1. The others are not really worth it. ME and AC were good for their day, but what's good about them is surpassed by the second, and the story doesn't really matter, you don't need to know it to enjoy them. Particularly with ME, it's not as good as a lot of other games like it. As for BioShock I've heard nothing but bad words about the second. The first is great, although it can get a little repetitive at times.

In order of what I can remember (other than ME2, AC2, BioShock), the best games I've played for the 360 are:

Condemned 1 & 2 (especially 1)
Limbo
Braid
GTA 4
Gears of War 2
Left 4 Dead
Half-Life 2
Portal
Call of Duty 4
Fallout 3
Oblivion
Riddick: Dark Athena

There are others but I wouldn't say they're as good as these. And you won't want to play Fifa smile.gif. I've found with the PS3, 360 and Wii that the non-RPG games tend to be a lot better than the RPGs. Everything I like about RPGs from the old days is now better in action and adventure genres. A good example is Riddick, which has some brilliant RPG prison talking parts, with some genuinely bloody scary characters.

If you're interested in playing old Xbox games on it think about Morrowind, Knights of the Old Republic, and Halo 2. Yes, Halo 2, it's actually quite good.

Best RPG on the 360: Dragon Age: Origins. Everything else is second-best. Get the Ultimate Edition if you can, because it's the original game plus about $50+ of DLC all in one package. Mass Effect 1 and 2 are both pretty good at being second-best, though.

For non-RPGs, definitely check out Bioshock (hell of a shooter), The Orange Box (five great shooters in one, including Portal), Gears of War 1 and 2 (very good third-person shooter), and Super Street Fighter IV (best fighting game around, if you're into those). Yup, 360's pretty good at shooters.

I don't play many games on my 360 that aren't Sports at this point - really, my 360 was always nothing but a Rock Band and a Netflix machine (my latest email from XBL says I was on XBL 70 hours last month, and 68 of those were Netflix).

I will throw out a few great DLC games, though:

Snoopy Flying Ace
Scott Pilgrim
TMNT: The Arcade Game

The first two, are worth having as low cost, high-payback games, and the third, well, is TMNT: The Arcade Game. smile.gif

I definitely second (third, I suppose) the recommendation of Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. Great game, lots of freedom and tons of stuff to do if you want.

I would add a recommendation of FFXIII. It's a game that has only improved in my eyes since I first played it, and at the very least it won't take up too much of your time to play through the story (though there's obviously more you can do beyond that).

I've bought several arcade games. I borrowed Assassin's Creed 1 and Mass Effect 1 from a friend. The only other disc I have purchased is Boarderlands. I have an amazon list going of games I do want to play. I think my next purchase will be Mass Effect 2, because Mass Effect 1 was amazing.

Don't have one myself to try any of these out but I've heard the 360 has a lot of good arcade style shoot 'em ups by Cave. Not FPS style games like Halo but you know the sort, that kinda play similarly to R-type or Galega on steroids. I've never played them myself but one game I've heard good things about is Mushihimesama Futari 1.5, Deathsmiles and ESPGaluda II.

I forgot which were which but some of these games play better in the japanese version because they more accurately emulate the behavior of the arcade boards, which lag as sprites overflow the screen allowing for a 1:1 arcade perfect experience special scoring tricks. Mushihimesama Futari's region free, as well as the standard black label edition of ESPgaluda II. Not Deathsmiles though unfortunately. However if either you or your 360 is allergic to japanese, I believe at least Mushihimesama Futari and Deathsmiles games got domestic releases too.

Iiif you dislike this sorta game, just forget I said anything. I mean there are some jrpgs I've also heard good things about but I'll be darned if I can remember anything about them.

ES4: Oblivion
Orange Box
Tales of Vesperia

Pretty sure I've spent more time on Orange Box than any other game in the last decade -- heck of a package. That's probably the purchase I'd recommend most.

A few things that haven't been mentioned yet:

XBLA:
Geometry Wars (The ultimate XBLA classic, I'd say it's essential playing for p. much everybody)
Castle Crashers (It's the best selling XBLA game of all time for a really good reason. Absolutely worth a purchase if you can find someone or several to play it with, maybe a little less worth it if you can't)
Braid (OK this one was mentioned but in case you missed it the first time)

Retail:
Burnout: Paradise (Ridiculously expansive, fast and fun racing game. I think it retails for <$20 now but keep in mind you'll end up spending a lot on this game's DLC because it's just so good)
Red Dead Redemption (I'd consider it to be the most impressively expansive game to date. If you're at all a fan of westerns or even interested in them get this game)
Mortal Kombat (Game just came out a week ago and I'd already put it in my top fighters of all time)

I realize this topic is a month old but keep it bookmarked if you ever find you don't know what to do with your spare cash. Every game in this topic (that I've played) is great. Side note: I'm very happy you decided to play through ME1 first, the second game isn't nearly as good without the solid background you get in the first game.

The Orange Box is good, if just for Portal. You must play Portal.

I've played and beat portal on Steam when it was free a year or so ago. If I were to get Orange Box, it would probably be for Team Fortress

In that case, it's time to get Portal 2 if you haven't. Since you're a Steam user, I would obviously say to get it for PC and not play a game like that on a console, but it's a must-have for SOME platform.
