I'd forgotten Tidus dies. FFVII was excellent in it's cinematography throughout the game and the Aeris scene is no different. Very powerful, surprising and emotive.

Hey man, what about Leo??
But eh, I dunno...I've had video game death scenes get me a little choked up, but none of the Final Fantasy ones really had much of an impact. That being said, I was SURPRISED about 3 hours after Tellah kicked the bucket in FFIV when i realised he probably wasn't coming back.

I nulled vote because other character's' deaths affected me far more than any of those. First off (though they were revived later) Palom and Porom's sacrifice in IV always got to me. Next, Shadow at the end of VI when he decides to stay when everyone is escaping (iirc), that was pretty rough, especially since hes one of my favorite characters. reddas was also kind of touching in ff xii, cause he was the coolest guest character you got. but overall, id say kuja at the end of ff ix. Kuja dealing with his own mortality was really very touching, especially his exchanges with zidane at that point. as a kid, that really struck me, and still does to this day.

Why didn't you mention Leo?

As for the ones given, I missed Galuf the most. Never actually played VII (but I know waht happens and how it goes down) so I don't have any adverse feeling there. Never played X, either, so I don't know Tidus that well...

Im sorry I forgot about Leo. Palom and Porom were revived so I found them invalid and Shadow was rescuable on the floating continent. I never played ff12 or 13 so if I missed anyone from those I am truly sorry. If there is an admin present I would like to request that the poll be editted to include Kuja(FF9), Reddas(FF12) and Zack(FF7). Im going to assume that at the end of the game Shadow left the party rather than died and I am aware that you mentioned Palom and Porom's revival

shadow, while he was able to be rescued on the floating continent right before the WOR, does stay in kefkas tower when everyone leaves at the end, and he doesnt appear later on the falcon. so im guessing that he dies there, at the end. as for palom and porom, i did mention that even though they were revived later, their sacrifice did get to me a bit.

Krile's reaction. Galuf was the only family she had left, and watching her grandfather sacrifice himself to save her from Ex-Death absolutely devastated her.

Leo would be my first choice. Such a noble and loyal soldier dying in such a dishonorable way. Killed by a traitor rather than in battle, such a shame.

I'd have to say Tidus from the ones posted. The ending of that game is intense and I especially feel for Yuna once Tidus really does go away.

Aerith because at the time I believed game/movie/tv worlds were alternate realities. So I believed that I could someday find a way to go to the world of FF7 and marry her. So when Sephiroth killed her I broke down big time.

Goes to show what a traumatic childhood can do to you. tongue.gif

Galuf It was pretty traumatic for me. But it felt like his sacrifice was the most unselfish and the most bravest thing a human can do. Galuf's death was like a huge epic moment of respect and love for his granddaughter and friends.
It was pretty tragic because he put in so much effort to save everybody and he wasn't willing to die until he knew that everybody was safe from Ex- death. It was pretty tragic.

Tellah Tellah's death was pretty upsetting and was unexpected. It doesn't really have that impact til the end of the game where you notice how unfortunate he was compared to the other sacrifices. Then you just crumble.

Leo Leo's death was pretty shocking and it made me rather furious and angry. Leo was just a nice and kind hearted young man. I think it made me even more furious because VI is the game before VII the infamous death of Aerith. And it was like "Hey Leo is a nice and gentle guy too, how come his tragic moment isn't as famous as Aerith's ? " It just makes me "grhh".

Aerith I thought that she was going to come back and Cloud and her were going to be together and have a happy ending. I kept on thinking CD2 was when they were going to bring her back and this epic happy moment. Didn't happen.

Tidus Tidus's sacrifice was pretty confusing because of the whole Zankand dream thing and complicated storyline. It would of been more emotional and sad if it wasn't for that devastating game known as X-2. Because he comes back in X-2 Tidus's emotional death looses most of it's impact. Though Tidus coming back was pretty lovely, espically for Yuna. happy.gif

Kuja Kuja's death was pretty heartbreaking and being a huge FFIX it's hard not to be biased and find Kuja's death the most emotional. But I really was broken up into pieces over him dieing near Zidane's arms. At the beginning of the game you view Kuja as this narcissistic jerk but that moment just changes everything that you ever thought about him. And poor Zidane.

Zack So emotional. So very emotional. And Cloud just watching him slowly die just makes everything worse. The Crisis Core theme song playing in the background. It just makes you bawl into a puddle of tears. So sad.

I'm going to vote Zack but out of the main poll Galuf. Galuf's sacrifice was like in vain and his poor granddaughter. And the phoenix down scene. Oh my gosh.

The ending of FFX is without any doubt in my mind the most emotional moment in any videogame I've ever played. The entire scene on top of that airship, with To Zanarkand playing in the background... Absolutely beautiful, and terribly sad. I think Square not only played Tidus and Yuna's relationship perfectly throughout the whole game but developed the entire party phenominally, and that's what it struck so hard.

Shadow at the end of VI when he decides to stay when everyone is escaping (iirc), that was pretty rough, especially since hes one of my favorite characters.

Shadow would have to get my runner up here. It certainly wasn't a flashy death, but that's kinda why it was touching, I think.

Kuja gets third place. ZidaneTribal summed it up well. You feel bad for the guy at the end, so you're sorry to see him go.

tellah would be my first choice

Reason:He was set out to get veangance and put all his energy into avenging anna and it was all for nothing because she had already died and it was wasted energy.

He had lost everything and all reason to fight, his fight was in vain and in the end it consumed him and he had nothing left to fight for or to live for.

This for me was trully tragic.

Aeris was not all that sad for me.

Galuf was somewhat sad since i actually liked galuf and was annoyed more than anything that he was going to be replaced by krile.

Kuja would have been a second choice since he wasted his energy on veangance and his anger and hatred wasted on knowing his own mortality and sped it up by starting trouble and ended up dying, but at least he accepted it.

still its sad because i don't think he was trully evil,i think he was more misguided than anything else and just wrong.

Leo:
Good choice too,not my top choice either
Cid:What about cid? celes was emotionally attached to him and she knew him since she was a baby,he's like a father figure to her and a good caring man.

I always get choked up when he dies because its pretty sad for her that she lost everyone she cared about and the word was in ruins and all hope was lost.

Another choice would be balthazar, the inventor of the time machine in chrono trigger.

And combined with sealed gate and the message that he slowly went mad in a world of ruin,i'm not surprised he went mad in that kind of world but when you see something like that combined with music, its rather depressing and sad and its impossible not to get emotionally affected like that.

next runner up:King and queen of eblan:I talked about this and think that them combined with the music and wanting to die because they were no longer human and no longer having the will to live as a monster and not having control over yourself to be upsetting.

I actually was refusing to fight because i didn't want to kill them.

Tidus, hands down. The part where he jumped off the Fahrenheit and landed in the Farplane was the closest any game has ever brought me to bawling. This was compounded by Yuna's speech in Luca, said they should never forget what they have lost to Sin.

Leo is a close second, simply because he was one of the only half-decent people living in Vector, and the fact that he gave Terra much-needed emotional support.

Aerith is third. I already knew it was going to happen thanks to teh interw3bs, but the way in which it happened, and the lasting impact it had on Cloud really made it stick. The only good thing that could possibly have come out of it is that Cloud was able to make a good life with Tifa in Advent Children.

Zack would be higher up on this list, if it weren't for the fact that he didn't appear outside of flashbacks. 'Nuff said.

I didn't really react in the same way for everyone else, at least that I can think of.

Fang and Vanille's death was meant to be tragic, but the events surrounding it are far to full of plot holes to have made a lasting impact on me. Honestly, why don't they just "will" themselve back into humans or junk?

To me, the most emotional was Aeris.

For starters, she was the only real female in the series to have an impactful death and for me, it's always more sad to see a woman die than a man. Plus, she had the most kind and gentle spirit.

---

Tellah dying, well it sucked, but that's really the only reaction I had to it.

Same with Galuf.

Never have played FFX, so I can't comment on Tidus.

Leo probably comes in second place, but it's a pretty distant second place, meaning it affected me more than Tellah and Galuf, but not nearly as impactful as Aeris.

They should have had someone major die in FFVI to REALLY make you hate Kefka and want him dead. A good example would be Kefka killing Celes, maybe right in front of Locke's eyes, and he can't do anything about it for some reason. I love Celes, though and wouldn't want her to die. I'm just saying it would probably be equal or greater than Aeris.

Well, I think the people Kefka killed made you want to kill him, at least I think so. I mean, I don't see why Cyan's family isn't there, or the death of the parents of the children of Mobliz, or the tragedy of the Cataclysm. I think there's many things to hate Kefka over in FFVI.

Though I agree her death is more emotional.

I agree with that. I think storytellingwise, his death was done very well, despite limited screen time. His death didn't make me tear up the way Aeris' did, but he was much less established as a character, while Aeris had been in your party.

I voted for Aeris. Have never found her death scene that emotional, except on my last play through i had Yuffie in the team, she actually cries against Cloud, that got to me a tad.... usually play through with the more manly players and they're a little more "Well s*it happens" (and we've all how Vincent reacts...)

I couldn't help but lol at that.
I haven't played FFVII, though I've certainly heard multiple cases of grown men crying at Aeris's death.
And yet...I just can't shake the thought that it would be that much more emotional with Guile's theme from Street Fighter.

I went with Galuf from FFV. I mean, his death is just AWESOME -
Possible spoilers: highlight to view
He and the other Warriors of Light are being tortured by Exdeath using the four Crystals. His granddaughter bursts in to save them, and Exdeath traps her in a ring of fire and tosses her around like a rag doll. Using sheer willpower alone, Galuf breaks the magical seal holding him, charges into the ring of fire, pushes Krile out, and rushes Exdeath, fighting him off at zero HP, even withstanding a triplecast of Flare, Holy, and Meteor, just to force Exdeath to retreat.

THAT, my friends, is how I would like to die.

I'll be honest - I voted Leo. But that's not entirely true. The deaths that hurt me the most in FFVI were Elaine and Owain. Before that, Kefka had been a dirty, rotten, underhanded scoundrel. He'd manipulated and enslaved the world's last magic users, set fire to a castle of someone that had gone from ally to enemy overnight...

You know, the same dirty underhanded Scorched Earth tactics that every military commander in history would use in similar situations.

Before that, I could see that what he did might have actually been for Terra's own good. By locking her esper powers away and so on, he kept her under control. But...

He killed innocents. He poisoned the water supply and killed everyone, women and children. And he laughed about this. I felt for that. I felt Cyan's rage, his pain. His willingness to sacrifice himself if that meant the death of Kefka and the Imperial Army. For his son's life, for his wife's life... he would gladly die in vengeance.

And then, not only did he see them leave for the afterlife - he made the choice not to go with them. He knew he'd never see the people who'd made his life worth living ever again, and he let them go, because Kefka still lived.

That... that's a powerful death.

Out of interest, which other games? I can't think of any that have had a real hit like the FFs IV to VII. The only other games I can think of made me sad but not upset. The only ones I can think of right now are Gears of War 2 which was shocking more than anything, and Call of Duty 4, also shocking. Max Payne, disturbing. Grand Theft Auto 4 maybe.

Off the very top of my head, the death scene in Persona 4 was killer, and got me choked up even on a repeat playthrough when I knew exactly what was happening.

Upon looking through my games, that might have been the only one I was referring to. I'll use the phrase 'disturbing' in regards to Drakengard, and the end of Final Fantasy Tactics certainly works as 'shocking', but P4 is the one I can think of to actually get me emotional.
