Topic says it all, and I'm surprised we haven't had one yet. My thoughts:

The serious game critic in me says Red Dead Redemption. It was an extremely robust, complete game with compelling storyline, great gameplay, and an extremely high level of overall execution. I probably would have liked GTA IV more (and I liked it okay) if it were more like Red Dead.

The videogame fanboy in me says Super Street Fighter IV and Donkey Kong Country Returns. They are both awesome incarnations of older series that are also shining examples of quality for their respective genres. I probably played Super SF4 more than any other 2010 game and would have played the **** out of DKCR if I owned a Wii (I played several hours of co-op at a friend's house). Both are fantastic and worthwhile.

But my fourth personal candidate for GotY is a game that I never even played, nor do I want to, for I fear I would be lost to the world. Minecraft is probably the most successful indie game ever made, and it's still only barely in its beta. When it has a full-fledged release, its dedicated cult will be that much stronger, and it might even become the third most popular series with "craft" in its title. Not bad at all.

By default, Worms Reloaded. Why default? I technically bought two 2010 games. The other purchases I made were 2007, 2008, and 2009 games.

One was Worms Reloaded, an enjoyable little game. Maybe not something that comes along with an in built claim of being awesome, but it was Worms and it was fun, and that's all I really want in a game sometimes. Fun and explosions.

The other was Final Fantasy 13. Which is not any of the above. Not enjoyable, not little, not a game, it WAS something that tried to claim it was awesome, it was not Worms, it was not fun, and it was not all I really want in a game sometimes. Linearity and Cardboard.

On the bright side, if we have a worst game of 2010 thread my reply will be pretty easy. thumbup.gif

I took to 2010 to actually buy the recent Call of Duty games second-hand though so for the best game I played for the first time in 2010, it's a tie-up between World at War and Modern Warfare 2.

Coming up in 2012, Black Ops becomes my game of the year a year late whilst Portal 2 is actually getting released.

I also didnt buy too many games in 2010. My vote would have to go to God of War 3. Its just as good as the first two if not better. The only other game I bought that really kept my attention was Saw. Very interesting if you liked the movies (which I did).

Like Del I played hardly anything released this year. The only two I can think of are Limbo and FFXIII. Amazingly, FFXIII was also the worst thing I played all year out of all the games from yesteryears I've been catching up on. So that's a worthy last place. The winner has to be Limbo. No it has to be Limbo. I think if I'd played New Vegas I'd be inclined to choose that one. This year I've got through almost all of Fallout 3 after weeks of playing it and thought it was outstanding. Anyway, Limbo is a good bit of fun and it can take the prize.

I played few 2010 games. I liked Red Dead Redemption, but the best game was Mass Effect 2.

It had more character development, more renegade/paragon choices, at the same time it nerfed the gameplay to be shooter friendly (cover system, less time spent on the menus, less possible equipments, almost no plot). I will borrow laslow idea and say that Mass effect was the best to the fanboy inseide of me. Seriuosly, I would pick Red Dead

I would definitely say, for me, Donkey Kong Country Returns was the most impressive, though to put it in context I'm always behind with the games I play. DKCR had, IMO, some of the most impressive level design I've ever seen in a platformer. If you haven't played it, please do. It's easily one of the best platformers in recent memory.

I actually have played very few games this year. But here they are in no particular order:

Minecraft

Mass Effect 2

Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Yes and no. I'm burned out on DQ IX. Its story is quite charming and its quest setup keeps you coming back if you like the game's customization features and gameplay (which I do). HOWEVER, I am completely wiped with its endgame content. It's chugging through random dungeon after random dungeon to level up to 99 12 times per character fighting bosses and looking for chests to hunt for 1% and 2% drops. I did too much of that, even tried some RNG exploitation for those drops, but it was too much.

Looking back at it all, Super SF4 was the game I keep wanting to play, keep wanting to get better at. DQ IX was just... endless.

Actually I don't know if I played ANY games that came out last year...I'm a cheapskate so I usually have to wait for the prices to go down...

***

Upon looking through my games, the only game I played that came out last year was Alan Wake, so I guess that wins by default. Nice survival horror game, so I guess I don't mind picking it. Hooray for default!

EDIT: I have to remember it's no longer 2010...

Yeah, I can think of only one game that I've played that actually really came out in 2010, and that was Final Fantasy XIII. Of course, I didn't get it until Black Friday, and I've only played about 90 minutes of it, but I definitely don't hate it as much as... say... 90% of this community seems to, at least not yet.

The games I've played most in 2010 and, by association, have enjoyed most, all came out in 2009 or even earlier. Left 4 Dead 2, Minecraft, FIFA Soccer 10 (best non-sim soccer game I've ever played), FFT PSP, FF1 PSP; release year notwithstanding, they're definitely my favorites of 2010.

Yeah, that's how I do, but normally I'm more than a year behind. In fact, the games I played more than any this year were FFVII, FFIX, and Shadow of the Colossus. I would probably say that Shadow was the best game I played this year from any year.

I didn't play many games from 2010 either, since I mostly just play older PSX stuff, but I was pretty happy with the ones I did end up getting.

I thought FFXIII was a good game, and I also recently picked up Nier which, despite the bad reviews it got, is turning out to be a pretty interesting game. There's a lot of interesting, unique elements to it that keep things fresh. I also recently caved in and got Minecraft yesterday, which seems pretty nifty.

This is sounding repetitive, but I didn't play many 2010 games either. The real game I picked up an couldn't take out was the Orange Box... Team Fortress 2 heart.gif

But I did play FF13 and the new Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm... I'd have to go with XIII for the FF-fanboy inside.

Donkey Kong Country Returns, METROID OTHER M, FFXIII, SUPER MARIO GALAXY 2, and obviously obviously obviously Pokemon HGSS (GSC were THE BEST) anyway.
Probably some I am missing here, as well as many superb games I played during 2010 which were NOT RELEASED during 2010.

Bioshock 2 was a pretty good game in 2010.
I must say that i was impressed with the game since i normally don't like first person shooters and i found that game enjoyable.
