SoM-secret of mana, (couldn't fit the whole thing in the title)

these days I'm getting interested in a particular type of RPG (very specific)
It is...
1. any console including PC (preferably PC, but anything works)
2. a single player (could be multiplayer, but nothing like mmorpg)
3. active RPG. I do not mean action RPGs. So that I do not wait for my turn, eg diablo2, zelda, most mmorpg like wow(although I never played wow),
i.e. Interface of mmorpg, not interface of FF type of games
4. Party consist of more than two members, preferably more. Therefore other party members will auto attack, auto protect, (and auto heal/skill) other party members. Better/smarter AI, the better.


good example...
-Dungeon siege 1, ( don't know how others are like)
-Secret of mana 1,2 sword of mana.
-Ragnarok online DS
-Warcraft 3UMS RPGs -assuming you control more than 1 hero.
-MMORPG with smart bots... xD
-Ragnarok Battle offline...only fun with friends imo...

I'm not sure about tales series, I only tried old ones like tales of phantasia...

I can't really find many games of this category since most games that have mmorpgIsh interface is....well mmorpg and therefore you control one character.

I'm looking for a game that have mmorpgish interface, but you control multiple characters or you control one character and other characters is computer controlled AI or another player.

edit: removed D2 from list. I only meant D2 as in "with mercenary" but the mercenary option in D2 isn't really good. I don't know why I added diablo2 as a good example i don't even like D2 heh

Shining Soul II for GBA. It's a dungeon crawler with a very good amount of customization options. Although, unless you play multiplayer, it's a party of one.

I'm not completely sure what the difference between "active" and "action" is in your case, but looking at that list it looks like you'd enjoy most of the Baldur's Gate series, Neverwinter Knight series, and Dragon Age: Origins (all for the PC). Most computers this day should be able to handle Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Knights, but if you have a computer with the power I'd easily recommended Dragon Age.

Those are all western developed games though, the closest japan developed game I can come up with is Star Ocean 3: Til the End of Time for the PS2.

My favorite Diablo clones are Sacred 1 (NOT Sacred 2) and Torchlight. Both worth checking out. And Secret of Mana's sequel, Seiken Densetsu III, is a lot like Secret of Mana .

I guess they can be same. I should have defined it more accurately.
by active I meant mmorpgish type interface, (Diablo2, wow, lineage2, RagnarokOnline mmorpg version)

I never tried games you mentioned
but aren't neverwinter knights games where you control a single character?

I don't know about dragon age, and Star Ocean 3. I'll look it up

Right from the off I thought Torchlight is perfect for you. The only downside with the game is the lack of a really involving story but if that doesn't matter then go for it. I bought it for £3.70 ($5) on Steam.

I dunno how far away this is from what you want, but have you tried Fate? It's VERY similar to Diablo II's gameplay, just more kiddish graphics.

Also not as hardcore as DII, but definitely fun. Basically you can build your character however you want (you get 5 skill points to allocate per level-- no preset spells/abilities, you buy all of that), and you have very interesting weapon choices you can get because a lot of them have random awesome abilities, like Chance on Hit. You get a familiar, though unfortunately no one else to join you. It's for computer, but doesn't support an integrated graphics card so I couldn't get it to work on this computer-- though the computer I DID get it to work on, it ran perfect.

Star Ocean II might be something you'd like. You have a party of four and can pick your main character (between two people). The battles are random, but you only control one other person and it's on a 3D type landscape. It's Real Time, but pauses for spell animations. The spells and Special Attacks get stronger with use, which is pretty fun. It also has a lot of great side skills you can learn to tweak out your guys. It's a fun game, definitely. It's for PS2 and PSP.

I don't remember the plot, but I remember Secret of Evermore had pretty much the exact battle system of SoM. You had a blonde-haired protagonist and his dog that got sent to another realm by some mad scientist. The main character kind of dresses like Fry from Futurama, too, so that's a plus. It was on the SNES, and was actually made in America, not Japan, though it's still from Square.

LOLOLOL, Relm, dunno if you already knew this, but the makers of Fate formed their own studio after its completion and started work on Mythos and Torchlight. Torchlight is basically Fate on a smaller setting/scale but with higher production values and (IMO) stronger gameplay. You should play it if you haven't already.

i was looking for games with more brighter themes unlike diablo2.
a lot of these suggestions are games with dark themes.
also games where I control one character (like zelda) seems to get bored fast most of the time.
I guess there aren't many like that =s

The Rune Factory games are all fantastic. I don't know how similar they are to Secret of Mana, but I can say that they are all well worth a look. The premise for all four of them is thus: You are a farmer in a fantasy world who goes into the local dungeons and fights monsters. No, really.

It's better than it sounds.
