alright when i play this game and compare it to say ff13 or 12 its awesome just stunningly great but when i compare it to ffx and ffx-2 along with 1-6 and 8 i find it to be equal or a little overated why do so many people praise this game like it was programmed by god himself i find ffx to be better because it has actual character developement, a main character who i actually care about and a gripping story plus it was revolutionary with making it so the turn based part of the game is actually turn based and the enemy cant attack simply because you spent to long before attacking, a graphics tune up, a new system, and voices that fit all the chracters in stead of text boxes

Yeah you're right on the most part there. I agree that VII can be overrated sometimes. A lot of the time, however, I agree with the reasons why it's so good. It has a compelling story and some excellent set-pieces, and a quality script throughout.
Everything you wrote about FFX I don't see in the game myself. Nothing about it is revolutionary. The battles are slightly rejiggered to try and give a sense of strategy and care in battles. I don't think it works in the end. A lest 90% time I was just using the same attacks and the system just slowed it down a lot. Tidus is the worst character with the worst voice in FF history as far as I know. I found him to be a right pain. With that the story went out the window. I know people here and elsewhere don't like Cloud for similar reasons. I suppose it just changes from person to person. If there was no voice acting in X I would certainly enjoy it a lot more. -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. Me on the Starcraft. |

yah ff7 is really fun and i suppose i did leave out a few things wrong with ffx like tidus who is pretty annoying but hes not the most annoying if you played ff13 that one british girl who i care so little about i dont know her name, and the battles which do involve using moves that do more than others but thats your choice to use it over and over, and the revolutionary part was the voices being added in my opinion games like ff7-9 wouldve had more umph to the story had they had some emotinion instead of reading "the world is ending" i mean how do you know if hes sad about that or if hes giggling about it and i always hate having to press X over and over and over i couldnt just sit back and watch the cutscene

Maybe so, but the PlayStation FF games already came on 3-4 CDs already. Adding voice acting wouldn't have been practical. Also recall that at the time of FF7's production, very little video game voice acting was really professional, and it could have detracted from the experience as easily as it added to it.
It's really impossible to say voice acting was an innovation in any case. Games on capable formats had been doing it for ages; FF10 was just catching up to a suitable platform for it. I also have to disagree that it's impossible to express emotion without it. Personally, I found that FF7's super-deformed field actors were extremely capable of expressing the emotion of the moment through their limited animations. I'd rather rely on that than some voice actor who doesn't understand what they're reading, particularly since FF7's English translators didn't always appear to understand what they were writing to begin with. However, it's not a game that's going to give you the same wow factor if you start playing it now as it would have to people playing it at the time. Not many people who started with a later game can appreciate why FF7 is held in the regard that it is, and I understand that. It was of its moment. It introduced Final Fantasy, and what that meant at the time, to a lot of people, and it was a bit of a revelation. It's not as sophisticated as the games that have come since, in many ways. It's not as rounded as some of those that came before. But at it's time, it stood out, and it's still iconic today because of just how well it did that - the games since then have improved in some ways, but fallen behind what's become expected, and none of them can recapture what FF7 did at the time. But if you start from a newer game, it's easy to miss what the fuss was about. Also, with my mod hat on, please read the rules and avoid use of vulgar language. Thank you. |

I think one of the reasons the game is so popular is cause of what it represents. Before it was released, most people didnt really know too much about RPGs. It was a breakthrough to a bigger crowd of people. It brought a lot of people into the genre and, like most breakinto games, it will forever remain important to the people it brought into the genre.
I still like the game. It is, regardless of what people say, one of the greatest RPGs around. |

Quote (Aeris-Logan @ 30th December 2010 21:44) I think one of the reasons the game is so popular is cause of what it represents. It also was pretty important to the industry itself. The Playstation move has a lot to do with it. Video games in general garnered more attention due to that advancement in tech. These factors created a perfect hype storm. However, I now hesitate to say overrated. Do I think it's the best? No, but it is in my top three FFs. I wouldn't call that overrated. From my experience, it was a great game that deserves praise. But I guess popularity is a double-edged sword. -------------------- |
