I got myself to the top of the Fanatics tower without too many problems, got the Gem Box, and tried to leave. The monks came and surrounded me, telling me to give the treasure back. I can't go back into the room, and can't continue down the stairs. None of the other buttons work -- just the directional for those 5 steps!

Am I missing something?

I think you need to press the talk button while facing one of the enemies ^-^ Hope that helps. If not, look in our walkthrough in the ff6 section, there may be more information there.

Or perhaps not. The following is what is in the walkthrough:

Anyway, try moving around and pressing the talk button (A, I beleive)

That's strange. Wait a little bit longer and see what happens. If you're playing on the PSX, your disk might be scratched.

After the fanatics gather around you, be patient. A ghost will walk up the stairs and start floating around. This is MagiMaster. Once he gets in front of the chamber window the battle should start. If this doesn't happen, then its likely you have an error on your CD, cartridge, or rom.

That happened to me, too. After a little playing around (since I was on a savestate) I opened the treasure chest after taking the moogle charm off. I don't know if that is what it was, but that was when he appeared. It also took 5 min of holding the Fast Forward Button.

I tried waiting 10 minutes with the fast foward putton pressed, then another 10 minutes without pressing it, and he still hasn't appeared!!! I'm not using the moogle charm, though I do have the cursed shield eq'd and a ribbon on Strago. All of my party has wall rings, with the gem box on Terra and Tinnabars on Mog and Locke. Any other ideas? *sigh* My CRC32 number is A27F1C7A, with the Checksum saying ok.

I've heard of this several times before, but never got a definitive answer to it. Two things I've heard of in the past are:

1. get a new emulator, as the problem never seems to occur on consoles, or...
2. don't equip the Gem Box until after you beat MagiMaster.

Sorry I can't help any further with that, but I've never run into this problem myself.

If all else fails, you could try putting the state up somewhere for download, and allow us to try and solve the problem firsthand.
