OK I know square arent currently making the remake, but simple common sense (and greed) means that they almost certainly will eventually. My question is what would people like to see in one? Would the game be almost exactly the same? Here's what i'd like:
I'd like a remake to be as true to the original as possible. As far as story goes, I think it would be a shame if things were omitted and new things added just because people know what is going to happen. So things like, yes Aeris is still going to have to die, we're all going to have to pretend we dont knew Cloud wasnt in SOLDIER, etc, etc. I'd like some new gameplay options though, for example I'd like it if the game started and ShinRa did infact rule the world. You wouldnt be able to go anywhere without fear of their SOLDIERs. But as the game progresses i'd like to be able to have the players slowly wrestle ShinRa's control away, especially in places like Wutai, and cause rebellions etc. It would also be good if you could expand on ideas like Fort Condor and recruit small armies to keep up the terrorist attacks. I didnt like how AVALANCHE just gave up on ShinRa once Sephiroth appeared. Any more ideas? |

Translation fixes (no more guys "are" sick, please).
Skippable animations and full-motion videos. Better quality 3D character graphics (LOL @ "box hands"). -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. No AC Cloud, please. Keep him true to the original.

Yeah, I'd say keep the whole game true to the original, though I think that would be difficult considering they've already gone into prequel territory.

Yeah i reckon the standard of animation would be at least AC level, considering it would be a few years at least til they started making it.
Here's a thought, since the majority of the people who would buy the remake have played the original, it would be good if the game started earlier than the original. Maybe Cloud and Zack's escape? |

Quote if the game started earlier than the original. Maybe Cloud and Zack's escape? No. The very existence of Zack is a major plot surprise, so if you begin with their escape, the future revelations won't be so surprising. Besides, for a character with so supportive role in the game, I think he already had too much attention. Of course the facts regarding Zack and Cloud are, as stated above, so exploited by prequels, that I doubt of anyone playing such remake without knowledge of them (that's also why we didn't use SPOILER to hide such information). Anyway, they should keep the game close to its original so any new fan(boy Quote OK I know square arent currently making the remake To me, they have the remake ready, or almost ready, to be released, in case square's recent failures in terms of quality begin to affect their pockets. let's just say that FF VII remade is their last option, since they still want to prove they know how to make new good RPGs. Here's hoping! but that would mean they'd have to produce something pretty awful! ...is it wrong that, for that reason, i kinda hope that happens? Im torn between my desire for the remake and something that is probably called loyalty to the company that made the original... The submarine fight against the red ShinRa sub would be amazing remade. So many new possibilities and its not like there are many submarine-based fighters out there. lol |

How do we know they're not working on it in secret? It could happen. But as for what I would like to see, I'm not sure. Updated graphics and VO are obvious, and so is changes in the script. But other than that, there's nothing major I'd like to see changed.

I doubt even Square have the personel to have people working on several projects. They may be discussing things like when would a good time be to make it but the story is already written so they could only really make concept art and develop music, etc, without having to devote a whole team of designers.
I'd love to see fully customisable components for barrets gun arm, where, instead of just changing the gun, there could be several components like sights, inner gun (which could be a conventional gun) and then outer ones which you could make mini-mako cannons. Yay |

In order to sell and keep the fans happy (if that's worth anything) I have a some ideas that would ensure success. First of all they shouldn't change anything unless it's absolutely necessary. Don't change the music at all, or even the bad translation. None of the script needs adjusting, and any extra scenes will probably just be awful. For goodness sake, no voice actors, please. Unless there's a choice of 5 or 10 different actors per character so you could pick the one that doesn't sound awful, if there is one. And an option to turn it off. The only changes I see needed are problems with the battle mechanics, like how Counter and 2x Cut don't work together.
The graphics need an overhaul, that's understandable. They shouldn't change the 2D backgrounds, they are crucial to a good FFVII. 3D worlds are only necessary when the game is played in the first-person or if battles are in real-time. The backgrounds should be kept as similar to FFVII as possible and simply drawn better. For character models, just find a balance between the battle models and the menu portraits. If they were ambitious they could draw the entire game in the same style as the menu pics, but that might detract some of the original feel. Essentially, the idea is that the company should think of itself as useless, untalented cretins that can't produce a good game to save their lives. Then start on FFVII bearing in mind that any changes they make will be poor. That's the only way to stop it being awful. I used to imagine a brilliant FFVII being remade, but that's pure fantasy. Every remake of FF there has been is weaker than the original, other than perhaps FFI but I haven't played far into the NES version. The PSX games, especially, are unnaturally slower than the SNES and unplayable. DS FFIV is debatable. I like it, but it's not as good as the first one. A remake of FFVII is almost destined to be bad. I'd still like to see it because I think it'll make me appreciate things about the original that I haven't noticed. -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. Me on the Starcraft. |

When it comes to graphics, if they made a FF IX style and quality would be perfect, i don't care (and I believe most of you don't either) about zillions of textures or sahdow effects and stuff.
about the translation, I always had the impression that some of the FFVII plot is so entertaining because the bad translation actually adds to its mysteries. What they shouldn't do is to insert lore from the compilation titles, but i think I already said why. -------------------- Live Long and Prosper! |

Yeah if they remade VII to IX standard i think many people would be pleased. IX is a game that can still be played today and doesnt feel too old- VII is getting that way lol.
Quote about the translation, I always had the impression that some of the FFVII plot is so entertaining because the bad translation actually adds to its mysteries I agree, except for the one quote where Jenova says "Beacause you are a puppet" really bad place for a spelling mistake. Does anyone here hate the thing where your team mates walk into you and disappear like in VII? It kinda annoyed me but so did the VIII style of them just following exactly where you walked. XII was a great improvement where they followed in formation. ( i know its a pretty stupid thing to be annoyed by lol) |

Quote (AlphaMart @ 10th December 2010 15:04) Yeah if they remade VII to IX standard i think many people would be pleased. IX is a game that can still be played today and doesnt feel too old- VII is getting that way lol. I think that's ultimately because of the errors, such as the typ-os and mistranslations. IX has the luxury of coming out after VII, so they had fixed many of their problems, making the game more fluid in its presentation. I guess a remake would fix those problems, but there could always be more problems created. It's obviously not just a matter of copy/paste. -------------------- |

i think all it needs is
1 the voice actors that played all the characters in the movie 2 they need to make the graphics on a ff13 level 3 they need to make it so you can choose between a original ff7 style and a kh style of combat system i think that would be awesome |

Quote (rouge @ 12th December 2010 03:39) 3 they need to make it so you can choose between a original ff7 style and a kh style of combat system First off, welcome to CoN! While yes, it would be neat, having a Kingdom Hearts-style battle system would pretty much make it a completely different game (not to mention that it would piss off a LOT of fans). They're also two completely different styles of battle, and strategies for one probably wouldn't work for the other. It would also be likely to be hell to program two different styles into one game. -------------------- |

Please, no remake. A port maybe, but no remake. Square-Enix is already desperate to get out of the rut they've dug for themselves, they don't need to spread their talent even thinner.
