I'm pretty sure that my deck, when I did finaly beat him, consisted of nothing but attack cards, cures, and potions, with some enemy cards. Zantetsuken was my friend. But when you fight the same guy with Riku, your deck is downright horrid.

After playing KH:CoM, have to say that Captain Hook is just annoying. I can't even get past him in my ROM.

The first time I played through Lufia III, I had the worst time with the final boss, Zalbak. I know I was at least two months trying to beat him. When I finally did manage to win, Wain was the only character left standing and he only had one HP left.
Since that playthrough, I've always been able to beat Zalbak first try. Even though he's optional, honourable mention goes to Star Magician in GS:TLA. I had horrible luck in that battle every time I tried it on my first playthrough. He was constantly summoning Guard and Restore balls. I did eventually manage to win, though. -------------------- Come with me so I can show you how to live Burning the candle at both ends I’m gripping at the walls around me Don’t complicate it I’m addicted to this life I’ll be your token of attention All my lies come down to this -Orgy, "Beautiful Disgrace" |

Many of the bosses in both Xenosaga Episode I and II (especially II) were so ridiculously cheap they would put me off playing either game for weeks at a time. Tiamet in I and Orgulla in II were the worst though iirc.

Dhoulmagus was frustrating because he had two forms. If you manage to Angelo to level 30 to get Multiheal, it makes the battle much easier. I thought that

Quote (laszlow @ 26th June 2006 07:25) And might I remind you: there is no such thing as a difficult RPG, and as a corollary there is no such thing as a difficult RPG boss. QED. I don't agree with this statement at all. Simply because the difficulty level is on an always adjustable sliding scale doens't mean an RPG can't be difficult. FFT was hella hard on my first playthrough and continues to be challenging any time I dont' choose to power level. Final Fantasy? Forget it, you cannot beat the game without power leveling in that one. I'd call that difficult. Leveling up is no different from selecting 'Easy' on a games difficulty settings. I'm sure you consider Viewtiful Joe a difficult game, but it really isn't that difficult on Kids. A challenging RPG is one that takes multiple attempts at bosses or fights when you play straight through it. Most frustrating storyline boss? Friggin M. Bison. That scissor kick is so cheese, the fight is always total luck. -------------------- "That Light has bestowed upon me the greatest black magic!" |

Oh, I forgot that there was a plethora of frustrating storyline bosses in Dragon Warrior VII, mainly those that are near the job class introduction. Gracos(giant merman boss) and Astoria(the boss before you gain your powers back in Dharma). The only other boss after that I had major trouble with is the Cloud King which took me a long time to beat.

Doom Dragon, GS:TLA. It took me like 7 tries to beat the n00b, but after that he was easy. I had trouble some bosses on Sword of Mana just because I never trained with the right magic/weapons. It took me a little while to beat Astral Dragon on BoF4 too.
I have trouble with random bosses, not normal ones like other people. -------------------- Why, hello guys! Haven't been around here in a loooong time! http://dragcave.net/user/LadyTwi http://www.backloggery.com/ladytwi |

Hmm...I would have to say...wow...that's a tough one...hmm...that one giant snake boss in FFVII where you need a Chocobo to get by him. Does that one count? Oh, and that one guy in FFX who's name I forget, Skinner was it or something? He was like the second last boss before Sin. He got super annoying because I got to far ahead in the game and go to Gagazet Mountains to early and I couldn't even get off the mountains to go train I would die so much. He was also annoying when you fought him and you needed Shell to beat him...or was it Reflect? The second boss in FFX-2 where you go back to Yuna's home island and have to fight that Dragon thingy I hated. That totally made me stop playing FFX-2. Well that's all I can think of.
EDIT: Oh, and one more that I just thought about. In FFVII when you get Yufi and go to her town and fight that giant thingymabob (It's been a long time since I played FFVII). It is alot easier not to get Yufi... This post has been edited by eloc_jcg on 27th December 2006 21:48 |

Sagat and M.Bison from Street Fighter II Turbo.
Bubble monster from Mega Man 1 that later on Mega Man X 5 I think was reintroduced. Altough not a boss, the part in Brave Fencer Musashi 1 where you had to shut off the steam engines before time ran out and KABOOM. And the Lumina Finale. Adel from Final Fantasy VIII The Black Marble from Marble Madness in the NES, you know how many times he threw me of the stages through out the entire game whenever it appeared? The flying boss from Contra Force: Alien Wars found in the second stage, I fell off him so many times. Final Lavos from Chrono Trigger. The final boss from Gunstar Heroes for the Genesis. Goro, Kintaro and Motaro. MK I; MK II; MK III Heihachi Mishima Tekken I 13th Racer and White Angel from Ridge Racer Revolution and Ridge Racer TURBO MODE. The Invisible team from NBA JAM Extreme Evil Wall from Final Fantasy IV and VII Id and Deus from Xenogears This post has been edited by SaffireWeapon on 28th December 2006 20:56 -------------------- PS3 tag: TipoDLuffy "...quite possibly the greatest game ever made" |

The Grim Reaper and Dracula from Castelvainia. From the original Final Fantasy, I actually find the Wizards guarding the Crown in the Marsh Cave to be my make-or-break point for whatever party I use. If I can get through that battle, I can handle the rest of the game. Though I only play it on the NES, all the other versions I've found are too watered down in difficulty. Yes, I know you blast them with lightning, and they aren't too difficult in a party with more than one person that knows LIT2, but nothing in the game is in that case. 4 Black Belts vs. those Wizards...ugh. I still haven't been able to pull it off with 4 White Mages... </digression>
Almost every boss from Ninja Gaiden on the XBOX, until I had beaten them a couple of times and knew how it was done. That game does a good job of balancing difficulty with learning curve, in my opinion. -------------------- "Getting upset over a trifle would indeed be unmannerly." -Afra to Damia |

I could write an entire essay on how ridiculously frustrating Battletoads is (it's been many years but I still haven't beat it without Game Genie), but more specifically, the rat you have to race in the level....called rat race....is the point that sticks out the most. Nothing has gotten my palms more sweaty than that gauntlet and all of the frustrating turns and twists you have to do to get through it successfully.
During my first playthrough of the original Baldur's Gate game, Sarevok kicked my behind more times than I could count, two-shotting my casters and ripping down my tanks with every swing. Add the other characters you have to fight in the final room with all the traps around, and this was one horrid encounter that pops into my mind when I think of frustrating first-time playthroughs. I know this is a bit different since there are many more people raiding with you, but more recently the most frustrating boss I have faced was the Twin Emperors in World of WarCraft. At its time and when I was level 60 on a cutting-edge raiding guild, this was easily the hardest fight to get down and took literally months and months to beat the encounter...I believe 7 months in all. And this is 7 months of raiding them every single week. It looks easy by today's standards, but back then this fight was INSANE and SO difficult to keep the coordination to stop having the emperors close together (which resulted in them healing themselves to full health every time they teleported) I laugh now because I've seen groups trying to kill them at level 80, when things are just laughably easy in that instance, but I've *still* seen people wipe on the Twin Emps fight. Konishi from The World Ends With You. She's a four-stage puzzle boss, and if you don't know what you're doing, you're going to be pulling your hair out.
Granted, she becomes a cakewalk as soon as you figure out how to defeat her, but still. The berserk'd versions of Kariya and Uzuki are memorable as well, since they have a light puck and can perform fusions. From Mega Man 2, the boss where you need to use the Crash Bombs to break the walls and kill the thingies shooting lasers at you...I forgot the name. You don't have enough Crash Bombs to break all the walls AND kill the thingies, so you have to know which walls you can afford to leave intact. I've played Mega Man 2 multiple times, and I've never gotten past that boss. -------------------- |

When I was playing through Xenogears, I ran into a particularly nasty boss: Shakkan. It's a battle in gears, and Shakkan's gear is able to heal itself quite a bit after about half of your attacks, meaning that you can only progress very slowly. This wouldn't be so much of a problem in a normal RPG, except for the fact that in this case gears have a limited amount of fuel, meaning that you can only continue attacking so long before you run out entirely (especially if you plan on healing at some point in there).
To make matters worse, it was a plot-forced battle that prevented the player from leaving in any way: there is no access to stores at all, and no access to any enemies that might be used to level up against. Needless to say, this was awful. I was finally able to beat it, but it took me many, many tries over the course of several months. -------------------- Currently Playing : Final Fantasy V Most Recently Beat : Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Favorite Game : Final Fantasy X The newest CoNcast is up! For some reason, the one I keep remembering is Verminator from Secret of Evermore. You can only reach him with your alchemy, and I had been getting by with a few specific spells at that point (Crush was one of them, don't remember the others). I was getting wrecked left and right, me and my whole preference for physical attacks.
Another one is the first time I fought a Tigrex in Monster Hunter Freedom 2. Just way harder than everything else I had fought at that point. That was the fight that forced me to improve my roll timing. I still don't like fighting them. -------------------- |

In Grandia II, there's a boss (the main character's brother. don't think that's a spoiler since it's so common and they dont get along, haha) that was so overpowered at first, I thought it was one of those battles where you're supposed to lose so I gave up halfway in the middle, expecting some cinematic/plot device to save me.
You can imagine my surprise when this super fast, powered out dude kicked my butt and it just said Game Over! -------------------- You're telling me that there's no hope. I'm telling you you're wrong. |

Though not really frustrating in retrospect, there's a boss in Wild ARMs III that uses a move which 1-shot kills your entire party unless you take measures before the fight to defend against it. The first time I saw it I thought that it was one of those storyline battles you're supposed to lose, till I got a game over screen...

I am often frustrated by boss battles where you "cannot win" or, if you do, the game pretends you didn't. Examples are several of the Beatrix fights in FFIX.
There's a fight in Chrono Trigger, the name of which escapes me, that has the same thing. This post has been edited by yelanates on 25th November 2010 07:08 |

The only time a main boss fight makes me rage is when it comes before an obscenely long cutscene that you can't skip. (i.e. Magimaster from FF VI)
