We've known about this for awhile, but it's coming out in only a week!
Recent trailer that shows the island layout, factory stages, and volcano stages It's my #1 temptation to get a Wii. Retro knows their stuff, and this game looks stunning, brutal, and faithful to its predecessors. And it probably won't be a soulless collect-a-thon like DK 64. -------------------- |

I've never played a DKC game, but I gotta say that that looks pretty awesome.
And regarding DK64 - I feel like a collecting came CAN be fun (Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie come to mind), but what turns me off is not feeling like I'm making any progress regardless of how many collectables I collect, and DK64 had WAY too many things to collect. -------------------- |

Man, how did I let this slip my mind!?! DKC is, by far, my favorite platforming series ever, DKC2 in particular is perfect. When this first came out, I gotta say, I didn't expect it to be good, because I thought it would be impossible to re-create the magic of those games. But that trailer gave me a lot of hope, because it's not just a SMB Wii knock-off; it actually does some unique things.

I'm a little nervous that Rare doesn't have anything to do with it, and since the Kremlings are their IP, that means no Kremlings either, but I will admit that the gameplay I've seen looks solid. Also, between DKCR and Mario Wii it looks like Nintendo is bringing back some much-needed 2D platforming to the world.

I'm pretty much certain that it's nearly impossible for them to make DKC1-2-esque work. To me, those games were just perfect. But if it's even near DKC3's quality, I'll be more than satisfied. -------------------- |

I know you have a near-obsession with video game "auteurs" and original creators and the like, but this team, Retro Studios, is up to the task. This is the team that practically reinvented Metroid with the Prime series and helped to create a new generation of Metroid fans as a result. They're actually quite similar to Rare - a studio from outside Japan creating some of the best games in a Nintendo series. If their interpretation of Donkey Kong is at the same level of their interpretation of Metroid, then you have little to nothing to worry about. -------------------- |

Donkey Kong Country without Kremlings is like Super Mario without Koopas. Also, before anybody mentions the Doki Doki Panic rehash, I'd like to remind them that Koopa shells were an uprootable item in that game. Also, they, along with Goombas were very much missed in Sunshine. Fun game, lackluster villains. I suppose it doesn't entirely count either though since Bowser's supposed to be a Koopa. That reminds me, would this game at the very least have the infamous K.Rool?
Otherwise this looks pretty awesome. Normally I'd consider the jump from 2D to 3D a stylistic faux pas but this meshes so nicely, which makes sense as this is essentially the original intent of the prerendered SNES releases. The game always was trying to bust out into true 3D, much to Crankey's dismay. I wonder what the old coot might have to say this time around. I'm starting to feel sad that I don't have a Wii, combined with the upcoming All Stars release. Not actually sad enough to go ahead and get one though. Yet. There are some... shall we say "disagreements" between me and the way video games are evolving and I don't want to support it. Resolve's weakening though. That's for another topic and another time though. This post has been edited by Tonepoet on 15th November 2010 04:30 -------------------- |

Holy crap, I had no idea this was coming out so soon. I know my partner wants the game, and it would be a perfect present, and it comes out the day before his birthday...
...unfortunately, he leaves for a Thanksgiving trip TWO days before his birthday. I may have to preorder it, then doctor up a fake case and he can play when he gets back. -------------------- Hey, put the cellphone down for a while In the night there is something wild Can you hear it breathing? No Kremlings at all, the antagonists are some evil Tiki spirits, which brings back memories of Crash Bandicoot. Could be cool, I can dig a good Tiki villain, but I will miss my scaly friends. Also, since Cranky was mentioned, he WILL be in the game (and yeah, I look forward to his rants as well), but outside of the obvious Donkey and Diddy, none of the other Kongs will appear. While that's not too terrible (to be honest, Candy Kong freaked me out as a kid) I will miss Dixie. I am starting to feel the pangs of not having a Wii, I have to admit...SMB Wii, DKCR, Mad World, Punch-Out, Last Story...I may have to make a purchase sometime soon. -------------------- "If art doesn't risk upsetting expectations and challenging its audience, it can only stagnate." |

My guess is that he will make an appearance, I hope. I mean, that's the series, you know? Kremlings vs. Kongs. That's the whole point. Maybe they appear as a surprise, or perhaps... a planned sequel!?!

The original DKCs on SNES are AMAZING, so I am really pumped to play DKC Returns.
Will by no means stack up to any previous DKC, but will be FUN nonetheless. |

It could very well end up a Metroid Prime-esque rebirth. It'll be extremele hard for it to live up to the originals, but it does have potential. -------------------- |

I am very excited for this to come out, and will probably get it release day. I haven't been this excited for a Wii game in years, and my wii game collection mainly consists of games I thought I would enjoy, but weren't as fun when they don't allow the SNES-type controller. It looks like DKCR also won't allow the SNES paddle (which makes me very sadface), but it looks like as much fun as the original games were. I was very happy with Super Mario Bros. Wii, and I am hoping this will be along that vein of solid classics.

Funky Kong, you will be missed: Who else would present me with groovy vehicular transportation for the price of bananas? Not all of them were scaly though. Now that I'm paying closer attention to the manner, I take it from the trailer that the scaly ones aren't the only enemies missing from the enemy roster either, which is unfortunate. With their mean looks and nigh invincibility, Zingers were amongst some of the most intimidating game enemies ever. Was it even possible to kill the red ones? I don't think so unless maybe TNT was involved but even that I'm not sure. At any rate, well placed, hyperactive or persistent Zingers could really make you sit down and think about how you could possibly proceed. It'll hardly be the same without them. Unless one of these Tiki masks just so happens to be Phanto from Super Mario Bros. 2. That guy was crazy! He's like "Drop the key now!" and I'm all like 'Hide the key, hide the key, hide the key. Oh crap, I threw the key down in a pit." Speaking of SMB2, it's a good example of how ditching the entire enemy cast can sometimes bring new life into a franchise. They weren't even made for Mario but Shyguys and Bob-ombs were most awesome additions indeed and I'm not quite sure why we don't see Pidgit more often. Still Tikis? Not sure if that's entirely fitting for the Kongs. Seems more like a Crash Bandicoot thing to me. Not that the two series are entirely dissimilar but Donkey Kong Country never had much in the way of tribal culture. I mean I guess the Kongs are more or less technically a jungle tribe but they don't exactly act like it. ... I think I'll stop now. Does it really, though?
Am I going against the grain in saying that the DKC series wasn't exceptional? Now don't misunderstand me for a second: I love both of the first two games, and the only reason I can't say that for the third is that I never owned it. They were good platformers in a sea of mostly average-to-bad platformers. But they in no way represented exceptional gameplay. They were Mario games with more varied Yoshis and the slightest smattering of Sonic over the top. They looked astounding, they sounded great, they played well, but it's only on a visual level that I'd say they were iconic. As such, I'm not astounded to hear a new game proclaimed as the best in the series. A little surprised, sure, since not that many retro revivals go well, but this has looked promising from the start and I'm really looking forward to it. Minor shame about the Kremlings, but I'll take that in exchange for getting to play as Donkey and Diddy instead of suffering some kind of irritating "Donkey, Diddy, Dixie and Kiddy have been kidnapped and now Wonky and Stinky Kong must save them" farce. Edit: needs more playable Squawks though. This post has been edited by Tiddles on 19th November 2010 21:34 |

Quote (Tiddles @ 19th November 2010 17:33) Am I going against the grain in saying that the DKC series wasn't exceptional? No, it's a really overlooked series. I go against the grain when I say 1 and 2 are better than Super Mario World or SMB3. I say that because the control and the games' character (it's humor, art style, etc.). My problem with Mario has always been that, at times, the controls can be very frustrating. You'll jump, and then slide off the edge. While in DKC, maybe it's not as challenging, but at least you go exactly where you jump. And the graphics are beautiful, especially in the second one. I just found them, personally, to be perfect. I don't think that's a popular opinion. -------------------- |

So who's played this so far? I don't own a Wii, but I played a tiny bit of co-op on one of my football buddies' Wiis, and boy oh boy is it awesome. It's now maybe my #1 reason for owning a Wii. More and more tempting.
